Bootleg Consoles General Thread

I have this exact one on the attached image lmao
I'm honestly not sure if full on bootleg or just one of those licensed Majesco/Jakks consoles, but this was my intro to videogames basically. The console itself was alright, if a bit inaccurate (mono audio, slightly slow gameplay, washed-out colors), smelled strongly of plastic and required one of those massive 9V wall warts to run.

I think the inclusion of MIG-29 as a pack-in game was just cruel. I was only 5 or 6 years old and had no chance of ever lifting off.

Later on, I got Sonic (the first one, I actually didn't know there were other Sonic games until I got a PC with an internet connection much later lol) and Tiny Toons Buster's Hidden Treasure. Still love them to this day!

My grandma also had a cheap DVD player with (terrible) NES emulation capabilities, and that's where I discovered Mario, Mega Man and other games like Adventure Island, TwinBee and Shufflepuck Café. The included controllers were massively uncomfortable and inaccurate, but I just had to deal with it because there was no other option lmao

Perfect time to show you the brazilian classic: Polystation!
View attachment 38858

Luckily I never had one, but many people had. It's lore is: Imagine you're a kid in the 90s or 2000s and you ask your mom or daddy who doesn't knows anything about games for a Playstation system. And then they go to the nearest thrift store and see this for a cheap price. There's your Polystation! It's a NES clone that released in 1997 and trolled a good amount of people. That's one of the funniest and most memorable bootlegs consoles in my opinion.
I had that one! It was a birthday present when I was, I think, 12.

The most remarkable thing about it was that the packed-in game (Legend Of Kage) wouldn't work on any other NES clone.

I have no idea why. It was the same fucking cartridge XD

Hi everyone I just merged the new bootleg consoles thread with the previous one we had sticked in this section, and changed the name to make it more inclusive to bootleg consoles beyond the chinese ones. :p

My first console ever was the Dynavision 4 mentioned by someone here before. It was also the final award from a TV gameshow, called Interligado. I dreamed about a Mega Drive but my parents couldn't afford that so I got this one, which was way cheaper. And I loved it, it came with a 64 games cartridge, full of NES games. :D

And I also played a lot of polystation with my younger cousin, and the best part is that it had waaaaaay more chinese bootleg games inside its memory. So thanks to her I discovered very young this mesmerizing world.

Hey!! Its your silly streamer/youtuber/tierlist reviewer/girl that sucks at videogames here with a post from her vacation.
Soo i am exiled on Chiloe with the family of my cousin’s girlfriend and i have stumbled with this famiclone:
IMG_1149.jpeg

Soo me as the tech local savy girl decide to see if it still works… an it did!

Is a curious famiclone with sega genesis port controllers. I have repaired one controller and it’s working flawlessly now!!

HOLY SHIT SENGOKU ACES 2 MENTIONED??????

Anyways, its impressive how many bootleg consoles found their way to South America.

I never had one but I had many friends that used to have bootleg consoles like the (in)famous Polystation or some other "1000 games in 1" type console.

We also had some more legitimate clones like the Phantom System. It was basicaly a "more sophisticated" famiclone compatible with NES cartidges (EUA and Japan)

I always wondered if it was possible to trace the origins of those consoles and know how they even came to be

Thats kinda what i am looking too, because i knew only about the polystation (my cousin got it) and the wiwi (a famiclone with motion controls)
But i was always interested in the story behind this consoles because they are like a intrinsic part of our South American history

I've seen a famiclone at a friend's house once, but never had one myself.

Edit: actually it was probably a Phantom System.

LOOOOOL the random Arabic text was unexpected. It says “tekken 2 and sonic 5” just like the English text.

Since the much more famous Polystation and Phantom System were already mentioned I'll mention the Turbo Game by CCE, a brazilian famiclone with oddly shaped controllers (and no that controller is not upside down)

I have a Neo-Fami I bought a bunch of years ago in order to play japanese Famicom/NES games. Only ever used it for Dragon Quest 3-4, Mario 3 and Megaman 4 though. Iirc, the sounds are a bit off but the games play perfectly otherwise.
Wanted to collect those games just because the cartridges were so cute and colorful.

I still have My Sega genesis from my childhood and I still can't finish the sonic genesis on it!

Its interesting to see how much the controllers of the Phantom System and Turbo Game resemble the Mega Drive/Genesis controller.

It just show how much Sega's console was the "defaut" video game in Brazil, just like the NES was the "defaut" video game on USA.

Phantom System's Fun facts:
The phantom System was released almost at the same time as the japanese Mega Drive so they probably copied the controller design from Sega's promotional materials. Gradiente, the Phantom System manufacturer, was working on the release of the Atari 7800 in Brazil but the deal was broken and the Atari 7800 shells were then used for the Phantom System. Gradiente took their prototype Famiclone to Nintendo in japan trying to close a deal for the official production of the NES in Brazil but was denied and so decided to released it as the Phantom System, five years later Nintendo accepted the deal and that was the end of the Phantom System. The partnership lasted for ten years up to the Gameboy Advance and Gamecube days.

Oh…. Oh heck yeah.

Also, shoutouts to the tiny $20 famiclone my sister got me at an ACTUAL FLEA MARKET! It was super kind of her and we got to play some goofy early NES stuff on it, so it was fun!

I also think it's interesting, Mega Drive was very popular here in Brazil, famiclones probably thought they could make controllers that resembled what people were most likely used to, i think it's hilarious how Turbo Game's controller is literally just a Mega Drive controller upside down

A very weird fact about the Dynavision line of famiclones, the Turbo Flash Gun light gun uses the same plastic shell as the Atari XG-1 pistol.

So I follow this programmer. He made two console bootlegs the Retro-S and the Game Tower. The Retro-S has 8200 games and 32 systems from the original Atari to PS1 and the Game Tower is more focused, mainly on the 5th 6th and 7th generation consoles, including the Wii surprisingly enough. Johnny the programmer is a great salesman and takes custom requests if you want certain games that are absent from his list. He's on Movaanstore.com he's running a sake right now
