" Boomer Shooter " thread

First I heard of this game called Lunar Abyss. I will have to check it out sometime.

When I see a retro shooter I kinda avoid 2.5D ones nowaday because the issue is that many are cool but not on the same level as Doom with mods...

I don't have on the devs, they do a good job but I want to see full 3D viewmodels and enemies. Glad that we get more Quake and Unreal inspired indie FPS.

Also the Klostyn demo got updated

This is probably a major confession, but that puzzle at the end of whatever section of the demo I was in is the reason I won't even try to play this game when it comes out. I won't bother figuring it out.

A long while back in like 2018 or so, I was under the impression that the influx of boomer shooter's was just a current "fad" for indie games. I'm honestly glad I ended up being wrong since there's such a huge market for these types of games. They typically have a lot of great effort and music put in. My favorite of all these modern retro shooters would be Dusk. I loved that game from start to finish.

Dusk is more low poly than Quake but Iiked it.

You really should try Zortch and Klostyn.

I remember this one boomer shooter I saw my mom playing once, looked it up years later. It's called Redneck Rampage.

This is the one for me

I lovelovelove me some Boltgun, dare I say more than the "main" game in their FPS series. Boltgun is one of the few games that I played it almost non-stop to the end, then bought the first DLC pack that promised me more gameplay.

Boltgun's formula is simple: Take Space Marine and remove all but the barest taste of story (which IMO, is nothing but a hindrance in 40k), add some humor, then take a good, loooong time making you feel extremely powerful, so that the first time face overwhelming odds it actually offends you.

Great game, and from what I've seen of Boltgun 2 it should continue the greatness.

Not gonna lie, really really love the original Rise Of The Triad. Such a piss take of Wolfenstein
Didn't get to a chance to play it until a couple of years ago. Still very fun and beautifully insane
It was a Wolfenstein sequel after all.

I find it interesting yet sadly it came out too late when Doom changed FPS for good. I'd still play the Ludicrous Edition.

I want to try it but I heard it was one of the weakest Build Engine game and I'm not as fan of the deep south ambience as much as actionners, martial art and horror movie inspired FPS such as Duke Nukem, Shadow Warrior and Blood (I don't count Powerslave in the Trifecta because it's its own thing).

This is the one for me
Another game series I should do instead of replaying Goldeneye and Perfect Dark for the 30th time.

Look at this new old style terror shooter

Curious to check out the Demo. I like the non copyright fallout shelter door and silent hill like enemies. The most impressive looking thing to me was those reloading animations. They looked really smooth.

Boomer shooters and arena shooters are my main genre.
Most recently finished up the Doom The Dark Ages DLC (brilliant). I also made a video overviewing some arena shooters still active in 2026.

Arena FPS should've been popular in an era where MOBAs and multiplayer FPS a la Counter Strike and Valorant have an e-sport scene yet this is now a niche genre with old veterans and when a newcomer tries it they get destroyed so they don't come back...

The fighting game genre is still getting more fresh people while this genre is struggling to get any, why?

I think that in Hero Shooters or Tactical FPS you work as a team so it's easy to get carried if you struggle and the variety of gameplay type (character/class) makes it easier to find your favourite playstyle whereas an AFPS is everyone has the same arsenal and movement + map knowledge are what you work on rather than learning one specific class and checking the overall situation to push.

This is probably why Team Fortress, a series with the Arena Shooter DNA without being a Hero Shooter thrived compared to Unreal and Quake as it retains some movements and skill while keeping the team multiplayer focus.

Well, this is rather awkward but I joined mostly to make this question.

How's Star Wars: Dark Forces?

I've been thinking of playing it for a while, even more so after it was re-released, but I've no idea of what to expect from it.

What can you tell me about this gem?

I liked it, the guns are neat and the level design is of good Quality with some light puzzles éléments, if you like this one the bests in my opinion are the sequels jedi knight.

If you are a Star Wars fan you'll like the game. Music and sound effects always bring a smile to my face, and the game isn't super long (doesn't wear out it's welcome). The remaster seems a bit pricey, but that's all relative, I guess.

I need to play the enhanced version by NightDive but I do own the original. Is there a good sourceport for it?
I found this.
