All I can think of offhand is to remove the battery when you know you're not going to use it for long periods of time, and to avoid overcharging it (so don't leave it charging overnight). Also, make sure to charge it up to about 50-80% ever few months if it's not being used for long stretches to ensure it doesn't bloat. And make sure to keep it away from significant sources of heat (like space heaters) to make sure that it doesn't overheat.

In all honestly, these batteries weren't made to last forever so if you can find a decent third party one go for it. I've heard horror stories about sealed official ones going bad since they've sat in a warehouse for over a decade.

Don't worry about it is the honest answer. Batteries are plentiful and especially with a device like the PSP, third party replacements will be made for far longer than you'll use the device.

Just make sure to store is somewhere cool and if you're going to be away from using it for a bit, don't keep it plugged in after you initially charge it.

It never even passed my mind that psp batteries could even die cuz the one I have right now is refurbished.

i left my vita in storage for a year and still works.
the only steps i take is to used an appropriate charger and never let it drain or over charge.

PSP has the one battery that I've ever had issues with. Both my OG and Slim version the batteries started swelling pretty bad down the line. Not sure why, but like others have said make sure to not overcharge or let it drain is key for any healthy battery.

First of all, better to avoid full discharge, of course.
Also, like Stookymalarkey said, you'd better keep the battery charged at about 50-80% during storage, and check - or recharge it - every few months (usually I recommend 3 - 6).
Useless to say to avoid "extreme settings" (brightness/volume) and, when not in use, store it well protected from external agents - like direct sun, dust, humidity, etc - maybe in a sealed bag.

I think I’ve had more issues with the memory card from what I can remember, but that was 18 something years ago.

Yeah all my PSPs have had issues, from battery to memory stick to disc drive to charging jack.
It’s kind of weird yeah. As a bit of off topic anecdote; I can also comfortably say I may have fallen out of love with my psp a tiny bit. I think 15 year gap is enough for faults to start out to stand out more, even if I ultimately still love the machine in my heart.

Were you using an actual memory stick, or the pro duo to Micro SD card adapter? I never had a problem with the latter so you might want to look into getting one of those if you don't have one. Much cheaper and could get bigger sizes too.

Likely an official one.
This was probably over a decade ago at this point. I don't think I've used a PSP since around then. Nowadays I use my Vita for PSP games.

They are dirt cheap on ebay.
True, the problem in my experience is finding one that can hold a charge. I personally used Amazon in the past when buying a new one since I can easily return it if it turned out to be a dud. eBay can be more of a headache in that regard.

me with psp : buy a third party battery just to be used as UPS,played it charged or paired it with a huge power bank if I'm mobile

Don't leave on charge or at a constant 100%. Also avoid fully draining the battery, they don't fare well in the long run when charging back up from 0.

about overcharge I find it on reddit:
All PSPs have an overcharge protection circuit. You have nothing to worry about. Once it's fully charged, the orange light will turn off an the console will switch to AC power

is that true?
