The best sequel ever? That goes to Team Fortress 2 objectively speaking. It not only builds on the original but has completely eclipsed it. A lot of people have never heard of the first one or know that Team Fortress originated as a Quake mod. Team Fortress 2 is also played to this day (by yours truly) with several iconic maps, a large micro economy, internet relevancy, and gameplay that has yet to be replicated.

As for the game that comes closest to Team Fortress 2 as the best sequel that goes to Street Fighter II. It was the first fighting game to set the standard on what a fighting game should play like. It took off into the mainstream and it made people get competitive with each other because now you weren't losing your quarters to the machine; instead, you were having your lunch money taken by someone else. PvP Tournaments were being held and a real comp scene started to grow into what we now know as the FGC (for better or for worse).
