Best remakes?

Ys: The Oath in Felghana simply for turning one of the weakest entries into one of the best in the franchise.

Lemme guess.... The "Gnorcs-With-Guns", right?
Yes its so stupid that they changed that but Guns bad so we can't let kids watch Actions Movies Lord of the Rings and Star Wars Either as they also have bad Guns in them. I swear the Logic of those people.

They said that they censored it "to fit with the theme of a Gnorc factory", but it's still mind-bogglingly dumb.

Mega Man Powered Up box art

The ones I were going to list have already been listed, but I yeah agree with:
  • Resident Evil 1
  • Pokémon HGSS
  • Spyro Reignited
  • Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap
I'll add Resident Evil 2 as well. It's the best kind of "remix"-style remake imo, where it's an amazing game in its own right, and doesn't feel like it replaces the original.

Totally forgot about this one.
Loved the cutesy style and level editor. Definitely better than Maverick Hunter X, imo.

Super Robot Wars Original Generations on PS2, it takes the 2 GBA games, fuses them and turns them into one massive PS2 game, it's also a perfect entry spot for the franchise since it only has original characters and units, while also being the start of the OG subseries.

I think my personal pick is the Resident Evil 4 remake (I'd put both versions in my top 25 games lol) but I have seen that mentioned already here. And then ofc RE 1 remake has been mentioned plenty and deserves it.

I'll go to bat for the Dead Space remake instead. EA just reusing a game that really isn't that old sounds like a recipe for disaster, but it's inexplicably really good. I like the detailed look of everything, voicing Isaac gives him way more agency, and the enemy peeling system is so gross I love it. Also it'll probably go on a pretty big sale again around Halloween.

That Wonderboy remake is wonderful.

I think I'm in the minority as far as Mario All-Stars. I do think it was an incredible value, especially the +World version, but I'd rather play the original versions so they look and sound right. I'm not sure why, but 16-bit SMB feels out of place, the same way the NES trying to do World graphics in Mario is Missing feels out of place. Idk

Pac-Man World Re-Pac, they turned my childhood game into one of the best platformers ever, tuning the bosses to be harder except the Clown race, that one is made fairer, mechanics are refined and the plot is expanded including a happy secret ending where you get to spare Tocman/Orson (Well, that depends on how sympathetic you saw him in the OG game)

DOOM 64 is a good game, sadly N64's controllers aged not exactly right, fortunately there is now a remake with the modern controls we are now used and love, making the exterience practically butter-smooth, aside of the bells and whistles a PC has in option department compared to a cart, oh, and there is a extra chapter that makes this game bridge Classic DOOM with 2016's canon

Musical changes split opinions aside, OFF is a great fine tuning to the classic RPG Maker grandpa of the Earthbound-like RPG, for starters you are actually required to THINK in battle, no longer Auto battle is viable, even if you wanted the option was axed anyway, the game looks prettier without losing the ominous minimalism of the classic one, hud is cleaner, adds a neat Critic-predictor that lets you know when your next attack will be Crit, letting you aim it due to the ATB, and while the plot remains the same, we get four secret bosses based in the Macguffins you collect

Resident Evil 2 REmake retains the scary factor of the PSX original wwhile tuning the mechanics, and due to obvious technological advances you get both games in a single experience, RE 3, on the Other Hand

Resident Evil 2 Remake is my top contender.
It has the same story beats, general environments and progression as the original but the gameplay is different enough that even if you've played the OG game to bits, you still get a lot of value out of the Remake. The Remake doesn't make the original obsolute at all though, the OG is still very much a great experience of it's own in a different way. Which is great. The remake and OG complement each other by offering the same story / general scenaro with different gameplay.

While it's more of a *remaster* / re-release, the Command & Conquer re-release on Steam was excellent value for money, since you got both C&C 1 / 2 in one package, updated to modern UI / resolution, all of the expansion packs, remixed musics (and the old versions included) and the option to switch between the OG and redone art (I exclusively use the OG art lol)

I also think REmake is probably the greatest of them, because it's one of the very few that feel like they make the original somewhat superfluous. The 2002 version is superior in almost every way. It's scarier, prettier, better designed, and fun as hell.
RE is my pick for the best as well! Even after I played the OG game, I can't help but prefer REmake due to its large amount of refinements and how it's the logical culmination of all the improvements made over the past entries.
Yeah, exactly! It feels like the apotheosis of all the design ideas from the previous entries - the best possible 'classic Resident Evil' game, before 4 changes it all up.

I agree with many of the ones mentioned before, including Dead Space, RE2/RE4Re, but I'd also like to put the Silent Hill 2 Remake up for consideration. I've only gone through it once, and maybe it was partially the surprise of finally playing a good Silent Hill game in the 2020s, but I really loved it. Ended up being one of my favorite games of last year!

Despite becoming the new punching bag for Silent Hill elitists, I have to say that SH22024 was honestly one addictive experience.

Resident Evil
Resident Evil 2
Silent Hill 2
System Shock
Conker's Live & Reloaded (While this one may be more controversial, I'll take the improved graphics over bad words. N64 games haven't aged particularly well.)
Destroy All Humans 1 and 2
SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom
Epic Mickey: Rebrushed
Yakuza Kiwami 1 and 2

[me, who is desperately awaiting a remaster of Rogue Squadron and plays games like Shadows of the Empire, Perfect Dark and the Turok trilogy through ports and remasters:] Gee, ya THINK!?

I really liked the less-is-more approach Nintendo took with the Ocarina of Time remake on 3DS. I was kind of disappointed they didn't do more and passed it up on release, but years after getting around to it I definitely appreciate the game more.

Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition was also excellent, though I feel sorry for people who didn't get to experience how much of a mind-blowing experience it was as a Wii game on release.

The entire SNES remake of the Erdric Trilogy, tune fining the first two games of the franchice was a necesity, and oh boy they delivered, while the port of III is easly the best remake of an already good game (i prefer it over IV as the best of the NES ones) not only being the most spoiled of the three remakes, but also adding new modes and a extra dungeon, something 1+2 didn't had the luxury

So, if I can have ff2 on psp I should go with that and ignore the pixel remaster? I have a Switch so I was thinking about that.
okay so simple answer if you want more content FF2 PSP no question.
to explain a bit more:
extra dungeons and boss fights and new equipment.
and soul of rebirth which is only on GBA or PSP which is roughly as long as FF2 itself, happening alongside the main story (it'll make sense when you play it, its spoilerly)
and to me it just looks better graphics.

on pixel remaster you got, turn on/off random battles, 2 to 4x stat gain/ money options, full dungeon maps (with chests, and a count of how many are left), a sorta interactive bestiary, and the choice of old or new music. but it "looks" sorta like a HD NES game, if you like NES objects and character visuals that's what you get.
NO SOUL OF REBIRTH MODE, this is solely alone the reason NOT to play pixel remaster to me hands down. NO EXTRA DUNGEONS OR BOSSES
so you basically get bare-boned FF2 from NES with "some" enhancements, and zero extras
you'd be disappointed lacking the PSP extras,

I've looked for videos on yt where they compare the different versions: at first sight, I like psp graphics much more than Pixel Rem. Only good side of the pixel remaster seems to be the QoL /cheats (money, stats, etc), but I'm used to rpgs and I could also use a guide if I feel I need help, so I think I will go with the psp version as recommended.

Dragon Quest has some pretty good ports/remakes. The GBC versions of 1-3 are neat too. I wouldn't call them the definitive way of playing these games but they're perfect if you're in the mood to play Gameboy.

my issue (well, not an issue just having to replay a lot)
for dragon quest 3 specifically, if you wanna experience everything feature wise in the DQ3, you have to play it like 3 different ways at least

there was a lot of exclusive features only on GBC
like monster medals (bronze, silver gold of just about every monster)
you had a postgame dungeon (GBC exclusive) that needs ALL the monster medals collected (i think, been a while)
the monster animations in GBC are very different from other versions of the game, most have no animations, and 2dHD is just well very different animations.

and then playing on SNES it looks so much better, and some changes i can't recall offhand, this is as close to original game you can get, before 2dHD huge rebalancing of everything
i think you also have a higher stat cap which is absurd with enough grind.

now the 2dHD game is just a HUGE different gameplay experience, doesn't matter if you've played all other ports since NES, it's too different, some good changes, some bad (depends who you ask)
new monster wrangler class and finding friendly monsters,
the betting arena is replaced with a monster arena using above friendly monsters
and much more story scenes, voiced, and all the QOL you could need, constant waypoints (can be shut off entirely) autosaves, and easy mode (you can't die in that mode)

some versions of DQ3 removed the dice minigame (Pachisi as it's called on GBC) this is NOT in 2DHD game (which is stupid).

I have an idea in my head that would be "considered" a remake

A sequel to Tsugunai Atonement on the PS2 but there's a section you get to see Walondia in full, modern 3D and talk to characters form the first game

You'd play as a chick who hates Reise for what he did in the beginning of game 1 and won't let go of her grudge for him

And the "Battle Of Good And Evil" gets fully explained and isn't some cryptic mumbo jumbo anymore, along with modern combat that has some kinda haste to it, because game 1 is painfully slow

This idea has been bouncing around in my head for months but I lack the programming skills to do it
