I feel like I haven't played nearly enough SMS to make any definitive statements, but from my limited experience; Golden Axe Warrior and Phantasy Star hold the two top spots.
Ignoring Phantasy Star, Power Strike 2 its my pic, its a really well made shmup and don't look at all as a 8bit game I don't have any nitpicking on it. One of the best Compile shmups.
Oddly enough, the SMS version of Ghouls 'N Ghosts is a very far departure from the arcade or Genesis version, but it holds up quite well on its own.
(Unfortunately, the beautiful cover art of the other versions is replaced with this goofyness...)
Arthur can be permanently upgraded in this one, which includes the ability to enhance his run speed, jumping ability, and can even get red armor to take an extra hit - these are all kept after a game over, too! The level design also changed to a degree, but all of the levels and bosses from the arcade version are present and accounted for.
While I don't love it as much as I do the arcade/Genesis versions, the SMS version of Ghouls is still some great fun!
While i doubt anyone would be crowning it the best myself included, i have a fondness for Alex the kid in High-tech world, as it was one of the few games i got 2nd hand from a family friend and played alot (also sucked at it hah).
Never played that many master system games, only exposure i had was the sonic titles i had in a master system emulator for the ps2 and columns because i love columns. Still i will check out some of the games on the thread :3
Shinobi is my favorite title I’ve played thus far, with Sonic 1 being close behind. Ultimately, I have to explore the library more, as the Master System is one of the most unknown consoles to me that I hear mentioned frequently.
It’s weird: everybody knows about it, but nobody can really tell me what the GAMES are like outside of franchises that exist on other platforms. That leads me to have to find things myself, so yeah.
I saw Nelson like this, so I read it again and oh my gosh, it’s so different now! XD
Actually making the choice to invest money into the system and games made sure I knew the library a lot better, that’s for sure.
Hang On is still a banger. Short and small, but plays so well and has great scrolling and times of day. Just as tense now as it was back at launch. Those hard corners where you’re avoiding another racer who’s RIGHT NEXT TO YOU is so tense.
I mean, I don’t know who’d argue that! The model 1 is a total beauty of a system. A fair bit… totally huge, but I choose to consider it “substantial”. It just looks good on an entertainment center with semi-period accurate technology and lots of wood grain.
(Here’s a bundle with those awesome 3D glasses. Probably totally impractical, but this bundle just looks like the ultimate video game setup in a wacky, childlike way.)
Also, to share with the thread, here’s what SEGA had as a kiosk for the system!
Not sure what country this is from, and clearly the PVM isn’t a part of the setup, but it’s interesting to see what games they chose to represent the library. This is supposedly 1987.
