I love Resident Evil: Revelations 2. It's an awkward and self conscious experience that wants the chilling suspense of the early series and the bombast and flash of the middle era. It's awkward and unsure of what it is or even what Resident Evil is, but damn it all so I love it. I played it years after launch and while it was on a deep sale. The story was a mess but in a popcorn munching enjoyable way. Gameplay was solid and punchy, with a welcome flair for customization, while still withholding resources for tension. I loved Moira Burton and her growth from a frustrated teenager into a strong young woman, with the worst one liners of all time.
But the thing that REALLY keeps me coming back for more is the Raid mode. I love tinkering with the stats of the guns to make wretched and broken monstrosities. Shotguns that fire seven pellets the size of grapefruits all at once, AR's with 3000 round mags, magnums with homing fire ammo, pistols that would stun a freight train. All of these stats and tools make me chortle as I stack buff after buff and upgrade after upgrade. Then there's the lovely synth beats that get the heart pumping as monsters from the series swarm you. Fun character selections including series vets like Chris, Jill, Leon, and Wesker. And fun cheesecake costumes for the leading ladies Claire and Moira. I come back to Raid mode almost daily for a short round or two.
