Really, it depends on what type of brawler your making/playing, and how the devs design it. I disagree with Pat on several things, and mainly, not every 2D brawler needs to play like Devil May Cry. Streets of Rage 4 didn't need 10 to 15 different unlockable moves to be good. The sales and overall reception proved that. You do get an alternate move set, if you bought the DLC and played the characters in said DLC to unlock them. At least Pat admits it is a him issue, and not the game(s) that don't give him unlockable moves. I do love the balanced conclusion, both come towards to end. It's about informed expectations. Games like Absolum or River City Girls have unlockable moves, because the former is rouge-like, and the latter's franchise has almost always been brawler-rpg hybrids where the player(s) can unlock movies via leveling up, and/or buying them. While way more arcade style games like Streets of Rage 4, The TakeOver, Final Vendetta, and Double Dragon Gaiden gives you a large enough move set without overwhelming whoever is playing, and learning the combo timings and how each indivudal character works. That said, Streets of Rage 4 and DDG lets you survive a large wave and enemies and combo like crazy at the same tim. Especially when playing on the hardest modes.

Let me combo like crazy in order to survive the wave, GG EZ.

Give me every attack in the Earth and all the world's beyond, and allow for me to paint a tapestry of pixelated bloodshed like you've never seen.

It's 2026 now baby, if I'm not seeing Quarter-Circles and Half-Circles being chained together in my 100+ 0TD combo why does your game even need to exist?

Because some games like to keep it simple. Like many brawlers before them. Not to say you can't have complex inputs, but most don't want that in a brawler. You can achive the same effect with directional inputs and have a complex combat system allows you survive the wave. See Ninja Saviors (Ninja Warriors Once Again), The TakeOver, or once again Streets of Rage 4 or Double Dragon Gaiden. Even Double Dragon Revive allows you to do this, and it has hidden combo/extended combo moves the game doesn't tell you.

Depends on how fun the combat is and the gimmicks within it too. But sometimes I do love the simplicity as long as it's a solid game. I think River City Girls had the nice balance of that. I recently started playing Scott Pilgrim and I liked it so far. On the other hand, Double Dragon Revive had me a tad bit bummed. While it's a solid game, I couldn't help but think it could've been greater imo. ::winkfelix

Revive's main flaws was platforming showed up the very few times it did, and the way parrying worked kinda jank with some bosses and one of the enemy types. They did about two patch updates for extra polish. Though I feel the last few bosses are still way overpowered or through too many mooks at you with the next to last final boss. Revive is a solid 7/10 for me. Gaiden is still better.
