Can't wait to see him taking a diarrhea in the opponent's face then proceeding to blow them up with a super scope

Fatality 1: He gets the nerd accessories armor and summons Super Mecha Death Christ 2000 and annihialates the opponent

Fatality 2: breaks a bottle of rolling rock on the victim's head knocking it on the floor then takes a giant diahrrea on it

I'm really fond of the Atari 5200 episodes, he doesn't even review the games, it's just him talking about how much he loves the atari2600, a console thats nowdays pretty overlooked when people talk about old games, I tell you theres certanly an art to making games about One Action and with super limited graphics
And then it's just him fumbling with his tv, man I wish I had a working early 80s tube like that mine are all from the 90s and 2000s

Also at the time people really didnt splice game music with the video like this and he did it so well, even by today's standards. He doesn't just used it as backround noise it goes with the footage

The same kinda goes for the Odyssey and Pong consoles, similar qualities. Nowdays they double as fantastic documentaries about the earliest videogames, everyone and their twice removed grandgrandgrandmother has done episodes on le wacky plug and play and shitty famicom games but how many did The Magnavox Odissey and pong consoles with all the authentic equipment and hardware you'd have used at the time? Didnt think so

Another great time capsule on what it's like to play a single player game "Together", love the kinda melanchonic spider man theme cover at the end, and Kyle was a brave man for wearing that tight costume where you can see his nuts and dick size (he points that out himself in the commentary video)

I love Texas Chainsaw Massacre and I didnt think James could accurately imitate its cinematography but he's a multi talented man

Again, just kind of an awesome documetary, Airworld exists now by the way. One of the few episodes where he doesnt say "fuck"

All of the bible games episodes are strangely cozy, In don't know, maybe it's the slower pace or the games having little to no music, they're just kinda relaxing; like christmas in front of a chimney on a comfy couch. Baby Moses.

On the opposite end, the rob ep might've taken longer but this is more spectacular to me. He REALLY wrecked the room for this one and took a few punches lol
That Texas Chainsaw episode still has me busting out laughing. "Motherfuckerrrrrrrrs, Cain't tell me what I can doooooo!"
One of my favorites though is whatever episode it is where he crashes out so bad his voice starts crackling and he throats that bottle of Rolling Rock. Too bad he ruined it by causing issues for his friends. Whoever he has running the channel now just doesn't give the same energy that Mike, Bootsy, Kyle, Kevin, and the others brought.

one of his fatalities is where he sticks bad ports and spinoffs up his opponents butt

This has me rolling every time I see it. Perfect line delivery by James there.

Agreed with mostly all the Comment's here. I Watched the AVGN for god i don't even know how long. kinda lost interest after the Movie. i found it all kinda just Ho-hum after awhile. The humor either Dried up, or I grew up abit <likely the Former> and yeah most Def Mike had more to do with the Show being Funny.

Now and again i'll pop on a episode of his, if it's something that interests me, most his stuff now Really Doesn't. You can't be a Pure gold Comedian forever, and You're Audience will Inevitably Get bored of the Same Bit after awhile. i Did watch the Legacy Glitch episode a few days ago, it was Alright... i guess.

Ah well.

I think the last couple episodes that hooked me were those 12 days of shitsmas ones. Those were really funny. And maybe the Hong Kong 97 one.

AVGN was awesome back in the day. Sure, not every episode was golden and some of the characters were godawful (Shitpickle and Nerdyturd come to mind in particular) but it was a great watch. I think 3 things ended AVGN.
1. The movie. Not only was it meh but it was also more James Rolfe than AVGN. The episode production slowed down to a crawl for a movie that I understand may have been his dream to make but it just wasn't it and certainly not worth sacrificing the show for over a year.
2. He ran out of games. Yeah, yeah he has a huge collection, sure. He didn't have it when he was a kid. To me the biggest appeal of AVGN was seeing him channel that frustration from his childhood. That sort of vitriol that can only manifest with deep-seated trauma-fueled hatred for shitty games you've been holding onto for years. I don't know whether or not it was real in his early episodes but I sure know it's not there now in any form.
3. He aged. He's in his mid-40s now I think? He has a wife and kids. Obviously his anger-based persona was going to take a hit. I can't remember who said it but there is a quote I heard years ago about punk music - 'when you're 20 you have the energy to be angry at the world and scream at it at the top of your lungs. If you think you can still do the same thing at 40 you're just deluding yourself'.

The saddest thing is that he seems to have become a prisoner of his own character. He could just put an end to AVGN and start something new but not only do I doubt it would take off the same way AVGN did but I'm also pretty sure a lot of people would try to bully him into going back to being AVGN. It is what it is I suppose. Godspeed to him whatever he does, even if I'm not there to watch it at this point.
It’s giving me a lot of relief knowing it wasn’t just me who didn’t like shit pickle lol.
Hey at least we got bugs bunny and so many others.

Sadly I lost interest lately with him.

I love the nostalgia throwbacks but I'm feeling like he, conceptually, haven't evolved that much.

This one is legit one my favourite episode solely because of the way he's done them and explained how they work.

I loved when he explained how technically things worked.

I am glad he brought him back even if it was a full nostalgia thing.

Fullstop, I love this dude. I was never a fan of “lanky kids” growing up and Mike gave off that exact same vibe. Never disliked Mike, just saying I never vibed with him.
This guy? He’s my exact vibe. He’s the kind of person I resonate with and become instant friends with. Love this dude.

Personally I wasn't much of a Mike Matei fan until after he left. It was only when i started to watch his solo stuff, that i realized how much of a driving force he was behind the scenes. His knowledge of retro games, his crude sense of humor. Even just the way he rages at games. But even tho he embodies everything about AVGN, on camera hes just not a "main character" like James is.

Apparently someone suggested the idea to Mike, to swap roles for 1 episode, and have Mike be AVGN, and James be the support guy. Sounds like a fun idea for an episode, but it pissed Mike off, and he went on like a 10 minute rant about how only James can be the real AVGN.

That’s truly fascinating. Sounds like had a lot of artistic integrity behind him. This is a really nice story.
