AVGN Thread

Mike is clearly the actual gaming masochist of the two, it's just a character for James. At least Mike seems to have a sense of humor about it, calling his stream Manbaby Gaming and all that. He's certainly cultivated an interesting streaming audience, I watch it sometimes but realize it is definitely a little deranged. Makes it stand out I suppose. A lot of stuff Mike did before having his own channel is in random places on the Cinnemassacre youtube channel or on Cinnemassacre Clips. I'm not sure if he has an art degree but it makes sense if he went to school for art given how good he is at drawing.

”I’m better than you, so I should do the review.”

My favorite AVGN episode is NINTENDO POWER, MOTHERFUCKER

2015 vid. Its so cool to see all 4 of them sitting on the couch together. James, Mike, Kyle, Bootsy.

2015 was one of the final golden years for me. The channel still had character back then.

I really like the censored version of the adult Atari games video. He really had fun sticking it to Youtube. It's better than the original video.

I think my favorite line from him isn't even really, just an odd thing he says:
In the Atari 5200 episode, he details the connectors situation for the console, and as he's plugging in stuff, one of them shoots out a bit of sparks and he says "Sparks. No joke."
That delivery always kills me.
Also in the Sega 32X episode where he says "and there were rumors that it could even damage your Genesis games, and I don't even know if that was true!" It feels like word-for-word something a kid would have said back then making up something about a console they didn't like.

Are there any games you all want to see james cover as the nerd that he hasnt already.

for me it is "the lord of the rings: the fellowship of the ring" the gba version, that piece of crap has an absolutely gamebreaking glitch that makes progressing past the mines of moria impossible

I like when a new video pops up, especially now at the slower release rate. It's like going to visit an old friend you haven't seen in awhile. The first one I saw was on my work computer when the TMNT episode was brand new, had to explain to some kid's parents that it was a thing on youtube and not me saying it, heh.

I think my favorite shot is from the 5200 episode (I think?) where he's talking about playing at night and it's just a shot of him with a 2600 controller in the dark, with the glow of the TV on him. Looks cool.

That’s truly fascinating. Sounds like had a lot of artistic integrity behind him. This is a really nice story.
Eh, it's less about artistic integrity and more about his insecurity in front of the camera. If you ever listen to the early episodes of James and Mike Mondays, Mike often talks about feeling not comfortable in front of a camera.

I'm sorry for asking randomly but what exactly is artistic integrity? Sometimes I hear definitions but when it comes to a subject such as art it cannot be set in stone like the laws of thermodynamics.

Maybe it means not following the latest trend or selling your show to a bigger company that would change it to a point it's unrecognisable (like in Wayne's World)?

Also to be honest it's a big risk to change the Status Quo, even for one episode.

I can imagine hearing some "fans" whining about the change.

By the way, AVGN started before Youtube? I heard the first episodes were made before the site's existence. Is there a link to the very original release or is it dead?

The first episode is the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde review, and it was part of a homemade movie collection that James made back in 2004. Mike was the one who uploaded it on YouTube in 2006 along with the Simon's Quest review and Karate Kid.

Craig and James had a nice little reunion (he shows up at 32:12)

Yes he did, his very first ep he filmed for him and his friends and put it on a vhs alongside his other short films

Mike then told him he should upload it to this new site youtube

Since at the time it was difficult to make a living on yt avgn was hosted on Screwattack.com and the yt channel would get the episodes a year later

  • Convinced James that the first two videos were funny and to upload them to YouTube.
  • Created and managed the Youtube channel himself.
  • Gave James access to his game collection, posters, helped him come up with the set and mythos.
  • Wrote a lot of the Golden Era stuff with James as well as edited quite a few episodes himself.
  • Kept James going when he was ready to let it go around the filming of the movie.
  • Incredibly passionate about video games. He knows his stuff.
  • Actually gets angry. His real personality is far closer to AVGN than James, for better or for worse.

The above was taken from a discussion surrounding Mike's involvement. Mike has definitely fucked up and had his own controversies and issues though. That's just being human. But a big part of what people love about AVGN was due to Mike's involvement. Like its no coincidence that when the Screenwave guys took over, Mike left, and the channel went to crap. Its only when he,s gone, that people start realizing, "the jokes arent funny anymore, the show feels soulless, these new people feel out of place, its like nobodies played the games."

Amen

90% positive he said he has an arts degree no idea when he said it but I distinctly remember it from one of the non avgn vids

The Angry Video Game Nerd was a really big deal for me growing up.

Monster madness introduced me to so many movies. Nowdays internet movie reviews are often pretentious way too long and shove politics into it hamfistedly, so Im very glad I watched his in my teen years, they were genuine fun and introduced me to so much stuff I wouldve never heard of like the movie Braindead, or Carnival of the Souls and they all got me excited to check it out in 3-5 minutes!
