you have lived long enough to see two millenniums, two centuries, the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, the reinvention of iPods

and wired earbuds,

the golden age and fall of Disney films and parks, the collapse of the original World Trade Center in 2001, 8 Nintendo consoles and like 14 handhelds, a god awful live action Mario movie, a good animated Mario film and a second one soon, a trilogy of sonic films, the marvel cinematic universe, the rise of the internet, the invention of smart phones, tik tok being banned in the USA and being unbanned and being banned again and is now unbanned but soon is about to be banned again because it’s owned by a Chinese corporation, a recession, the last sunset of the 1900s, and you aren’t even 50 yet

And ill do it again!
We witness the technological advancement in computer graphics and engineering. Also the evolution of Televisions [more like devolution] i rather be on a CRT then a flat panel

Today I was in Target and felt really old because I saw a The Land Before Time t-shirt and remembered that I saw the film in a theater when it was new.

Land Before Time was the first movie I shed a tear to (I was a kid back then)

I felt that the ending sequence that featured "If We Hold On Together" was very apt and touching...

The next time I shed a tear over an ending sequence was Lufia II (SNES), and it wasn't just shedding a tear, it was a full-blown, fetal position sobbing...

I was born too late to make software for Windows 95 ;-;
Imagine all the funny viruses I could make

I was born in a random poor country therefore the most advanced technology we had was radio until I convinced my mother TV is a good thing and then we had a weird white and green TV she somehow managed to get from the place she works in so the place changed the TV and gave the old one for free just to get rid of it and my mother was there to be lucky. The TV was so weird it had buttons for channels on top of the TV so no remote controller yet lol. My evil plan to get TV was a long term investment to play video games lol. Arcade was cool but I did math and buying Atari 2600 would be a better choice. My mother never gave me pocket money so I had to work for the money and still to this day she has no idea what I did for money lol

I had no idea Americans enjoying their PlayStation 1 while the most advanced video game console we knew was Sega Genesis. We followed rest of the world like 10 years late. The 90s of my country no different than 80s of America lol. However Sega Genesis was a big thing. We were playing 2D games on it and then boom suddenly games started to be 3D on the same console. No other video game console experienced huge technological leap in the same console but SNES is honorable mention because Nintendo was always SEGA wannabe lol. Sega Genesis felt so amazing a guy I knew who owns the only video game shop in the town displayed his Sega Genesis that was more than what we had. He merged some tech to Sega Genesis we never saw before like the console is Voltron or Power Rangers (if you are not that old) lol. Back then people liked the idea of things merges and becomes something better. This is the dream evolved and eventually turned into the idea of smartphones of today so you don't have to carry tons of devices with you, one device can do tons of things.

Now from radio to smartphones, it seems magical to me. Imagine we were watching Star Trek and they were talking to their computers and using smart tech that does anything, now I can do the same. My phone can have a conversation and this is weird and amazing simultaneously. Perhaps mine and related generations think about tech more in terms of what Arthur C. Clark said: "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." lol

However it makes newer generation misunderstand and overestimate my generation. For example I can write a program and hack my PS2 because I think in terms of laws of physics and think about computers as a physical existence that works via laws of physics, chemistry and even quantum. I watched too much MacGyver and Doctor Who so it helped a lot to think with science and use science like magic idea lol. I know that much but new generation people don't look at tech that way. They don't understand the programming logic because they never knew how even pinball machines worked so they cannot use their culture and tech experience by living all the tech improvement in their life time to understand how any new tech works. That's why they try to think in the way "learning video game development codes" and honestly this is probably why new generation video games are so buggy. They are born to advanced tech without able to comprehend how these works while I understand way better than them lol. Sometimes I talk with young people who are "expert" in the electricity and computer fields and I witness so many wrongs they believe in. IDK if we have to blame their education system ignoring teaching basics of basics or they ironically believe life works via some magic BS lol. I guess they don't teach kids how to build a nuclear station anymore in high school despite they are in scientist grade lol. And yes, even in primary school you cannot start high school if you cannot experience how power stations works and why we use the current system, and in high school you gotta be able to explain why we use electrons instead of something else and theorical explanation of how to use protons for power if you somehow cannot find electrons. It was rather fun to learn "basics of colonizing planets" and how most of the planets in our solar system is "bad for colonizing" was fun (that's space age for ya lol). I don't think kids actually learn anything these days lol.

Well as for earbuds, I'm glad wireless ones exist so I won't accidentally hang myself like I suicided lol but I also use wired ones too. It depends on where I'm and what I doing. However due to battery problem I separate the device I use so despite I have a smartphone I still use a seperate music player and camera. I also carry lots of batteries on my bag. TBH despite how life and tech changes I still live like the kid who carried so much battery for his walkman but perhaps only significant change now is I also don't have to carry tapes. I dislike being relied on internet so I always have the offline backups too. In that regard Spotify useful enough but my only complaint is when it comes to listening to music nothing beats analog devices. Digital devices better for displaying visuals.

Long story short, living for decades and especially growing up in a country that was behind of rest of the world I feel like a time traveller at most. I know dreams are possible and it fuels my imagination still to this day. Before touch screens invented so many kids dreamed of it and had theories how it can work, so as better screens with better qualities. Now we dream bigger and hopefully I'll be alive when augmented reality powered by AIs to turn real world into video game reality with a special headset to play decent games I always dreamed since I saw the failed mess Virtual Boy that broke so many necks lol. I have no money or resources to realize this so I leave the ball to people who can lol. Microsoft you got the thing and Elon Musk save us yo lol.

And, yet, we have seen less world-changing events than other generations. Ain't that crazy?
We've seen at least 20 once-in-a-lifetime financial crises and end-of-the-world prophecies though. That's gotta count for something seeing how statistically poor they made us.

Nothing is biggie after surviving the end of 2nd millennium calendar and not being defeated by the numbers "2000". You can beat anything if you survived Y2K!!!! lol

I think the most telling thing is how much surface level that all was.

How much of that was based on consumerism, media franchises and the like.
Its as telling as it is depressing frankly.
Also we didnt see 2 millenniums and 2 centuries, we all came in for the tail end of one of the most important, we saw the close out to a single millennium and a single century

Y2K alone is an event that had some sort of shape on everyone one of us.

Like while the ipod swept the nation you probably dont know that before that, folks would just make their own MP3 players for their home stereo system or sometimes car system. Nerd and Geeks were actually capable back then with massive skill sets where as now adays you can just buy into being one.

Its not about what Mario, Sonic or whatever corpo mascot we view. Those are shallow things that matter little.

What matters is that we saw the world before, we grew up in that world before.
For my gen, its like the silent gen, when they first got electricity and still talk about that one day, to this day. In the future when were all old as absolute hell, were gonna talk about that period.
How we were there when the entire population came online. How we saw the transition of analog to digital, the advent of any digital problem we see now, the first communities form. Evolution of e-commerce, the techboom and bubble of that turn of millenium.

We got to experience video rental stores, we got to go to school not constantly pushed into screen or monitor.

We had a popular mainstream culture that anyone could jump in on and be a part of, people were generally nicer back. The food just tasted better, sodas just tasted better.

We saw nations around the world rise and fall. Every week on Carmen San Diego they had to explai how their geography was correct as of that exact week because the world was in such flux in other countries that things were constantly changing.

And this is all just the rose colored tint of a military brat who was living around Japan and Hawaii.

Everyone from every country will have a marginally different take, as well as age groups on this period of time pre net boom.

Though regardless, when I think back, Im not in awe over something as fucking worthless as a mario games, sonic films or fucking tik tok.

I think back about things that actually matter, not what the current corpo overlords want us to think matters IE material bullshit. I think back on witnessing the human condition, right before all of us got sucked into this digital hell.

If your profile is right and you are 13....well Christ, I prolly have wasted a lot of my breath but maybe something will click.
Still shocked the TOS age is so young despite the repo having games with straight up adult content.....

(OOC) I have been alive long enough to see every technology boom since the NES. I was 7 or 8 when it hit the US shores, and it was amazing. Yes, I am dating myself here roughly anyway, but it doesn't matter.

Like @Clippy, I have seen the rise and fall of the "WORLD IS ENDING" rhetoric and fads come and go in both the world and tech. The clear plastic electronics fads, the too many zombie games fad, etc. They all roll back around.

I remember the last sunset of 1999, the big scare of planes falling out of the skies, birds flying upside down, dogs and gerbils starting families. And yet, here we are. Can't wait for the next "big thing"

There were several crisis before us.

The Spanish Flu was worse than the SARS COV-19
