Anyone ever use the netplay feature of an emulator?

used netplay on visualboy back in the day to play sonic advance 3 with my little brother. we got pretty far but that game felt almost impossible during bosses so we just played the stages we liked for a while

I remember one time getting Goldeneye 64 to work with a friend, but it was local WLAN. I see all these emulators with the feature, but I wonder... where do people wanting to play together meet up?

I think I once tried to do a pokemon battle with a friend on a GBA emulator, did it one time, then never again
