Anyone currently reading comics?

can't say i'm *currently* but it took me awhile to realize and say to myself 'oh hey ... the last comic i read was 'the walking dead' and the way robert kirkman ended it ... ugh ! >:(

otherwise ... damn ... haven't read any comics in like 6 years ... so that was my last one

i was reading through saga and its sort of ass. i really liked dengo as a character conceptually but they really just didnt know what to do with him and thats the problem the whole series has as a whole. cool ideas but then clearly lost on what to do with them and so it ends up following the same type of conflict over and over (like a soap opera)

I read mostly manga but I started buying some dc/marvel comics when the editorial that had the license here went out of business and started selling everything at like 40% off
Superman for all seasons, Spider-Man blue and Superman Peace on Earth are the 3 I liked the most from what I bought
images-55.jpeg

I also just bought King of Spies because the cover looks cool as hell, so that's probably the next comic I read

Been re-reading Spider-Man from the very beginning (1962) not long after I saw No Way Home in 2021 and adding all of the spin-off series. As of right now I’m up to the year 2016 and man, it’s a hell of a ride.

Here and there I'll read Archie's Mega Man or IDW's Sonic, sometimes DC's Batman.

It's been awhile, new job threw off my reading!

First, here's an image I refuse to explain in any way:

Weekly superhero fare hasn't offered up any new surprises, but DC's Absolute books for their trinity are still a blast; Absolute Superman in particular has Jason Aaron tackling modern topics left and right, probably the freshest Superman take since Grant Morrison's New 52 reboot. It's a small sounding change, but giving Superman a childhood on his doomed world of Krypton makes his urge to save Earth even more apparent, he grew up watching his parents do their best and the systems and powers-that-be couldn't or wouldn't do what it takes to stave off disaster. Also, it has to be said, Jor-El and Lara are finally characters for once and it's great, picture related.

Another fun ongoing is Birds of Prey, with the ongoing friendship between Batgirl and Big Barda being a real treat. The book has been a stunner, visually, but brought in a new artist this week. I was definitely worried, but I shouldn't have been; artist Juann Cabal, with colors from Adriano Lucas, have kept up the excellence. I'm a big sucker for fun and creative panel layouts, so here's a two page treat.

Outside of the Big 2, I've been looking at a few new things. EC Comics is back, apparently? Best known for being the infamous publisher of horror and crime stories that was deemed the primary offender in the Wertham's crusade against comics, there's been some homages in the last year or so. I'm trying out the latest fantasy anthology in that series, Cruel Kingdom. There's 3-4 stories from big name authors and artists in each issue, mostly adhering to the horror-style "ironic bad ending" that EC was known for. Tragically, I came away pretty underwhelmed; with the exception of a fascinating vignette about human astronauts landing in a Middle-Earth knockoff by the exception Al Ewing, most of the stories feel as old as the ones they're drawing on. Nothing new to see here, sadly.

On the other hand, String by writer Paul Tobin and artist Carlos Javier Olivares has been a pleasant surprise. Namgung Yoon-Sook has a unique ability; she sees "strings" coming off of the people around her. Blue strings connect the ones who've slept together, but black strings bind a killer and their victim. While the former has given her an edge in the private detective business, it's the latter that the police consult her on. After being called in to help on a case, Yoon wakes up the next day to find a black string attached to herself, and no clear idea of where the other end connects. Is she about to kill, or be killed? Hell if I know, but the book is fun, sexy, and could probably be adapted into a TV show of some kind in a heartbeat.

I think I'll wrap it up here for the moment, tons of other solid reads out there right now though. I also just re-read the amazing Batman Inc., and I read through a manga series called Kagurabachi that blew me away with the artwork and pacing; the series never settles into a status quo, no "business as usual". It's so rare for an ongoing comic or manga or televesion show to really avoid that, and keep you guessing.

My supposed big comic reading plans I talked a big game about the last time I was posting in here never came or fruition, but I will change that; I swear it!

It ruined an entire generation of women

Just kidding that was the movie

Seriously though I can see why girls would be attracted to him in the comic, he's kinda cute fun and charming

In the movie it makes no sense to me lol
This cretin said no to 3 hotties for some 4/10 unstable chick, he deserved what he got

I had a friend who insisted that it was the greatest romance story or something like that, which I always found both confusing and hilarious. In the comics it's like part of the whole storys arc that it isn't a good relationship and that Scott's kind of a dick, and even in the less cerebral movie you're never really supposed to root for them I don't think.

Please don't badmouth my wife Ramona like that...

Jokes aside, I finally read this the entire way through last year before Takes Off premiered and it was so fucking good and I'm kind of glad I waited until I was in my late 20s to read it because then you can kinda come from the same angle that BLOM did himself when writing it. I liked the movie alot growing up but reading the comic as an adult hit really close to home because the characters are all in that directionless post-college point in life. I love how the comic had a much stronger focus on the music and the band. Michael Cera was such a good cast for one side of Scott's personality (the "innocent" stupid one) that it completely overshadowed the confident, toxic side.

Ramona Envy and Wallace are my favorite characters, but their movie portrayals are much less interesting and sort of flanderized which is a shame. The movie feels like the entire cast has their book 1-2 traits the entire story without evolving for the mostpart.

I think a lot of commentary on Scott Pilgrim in general comes from people who are too young to understand the characters. They're meant to be imperfect because that's what makes them relatable. They're all kind of a dick. Scott and Ramona are ultimately good for each other because at the end they both overcome most of their traits of running away from problems instead of confronting them, which doesn't really show in the movie at all because it's so abridged and clumsy.

Romance? It's about a bunch of young guys and girls doing stuff with videogame and cartoon stuff thrown in
As far as romance goes everyone's kind of a failure

It's a shame the movie (and by extension the game) has sort of cemented in the zeitgeist that this is all the story is.

But that's the best part!

I also hate how most people think Scott is the only one who hooked up with Knives

Scott didnt actually do anything, Kim on the other hand drukedly made out with her while she was in her bathing suit

Yeah, that's sorta what I mean when I say that the online conversations around SP the last decade has been really reductive, because it seems to be more reactionary takes from kids on the memes/infamous scenes than actual discussion or whatever. "omg scott is evil! omg ramona is a bipolar slut! omg lisa is perfect and did nothing wrong!" et cetera.
Knives was just a rebound for Scott who was so damaged he felt like an inexperienced girl was the only one he'd be able to impress. Crummy? Sure! Evil? Not really, since he still was too much of a "chicken" to even take advantage of her.

I probably count as some sort of superfan of SP and Brian Lee O'Malley in general, but understanding that the characters are all confused fools with unlikeable traits is part of the experience I think, and isn't really in there to detract from the story.

I don’t don’t what kind of people can think scott is evil
Shut-ins? Women who never befriended a guy?

He's an average 23 year old man with a couple nerdy interests

I don't want to be that guy, but I think it's those gosh darn youngins.

There used to be a really popular misconception that the rest of the cast didn't find it weird that he was dating Knives, which seemed to mainly come from mid-2010s puriteens, but maybe that's been debunked enough times that it's not a common belief anymore.

Didnt even kiss her despite her being an almost perfect girlfriend, she was cute, young, adored him and would've stayed loyal but he wasn’t really into her, just wanted a girl

The worst thing he actually did was fucking up Kim so she became an insecure mess

Then the two girls he fucked up go on to hormonally sloppily make out, how squallid and sad

I am that guy, teens who grew up on the internet are strangely puritanical and have a black and white view of the world from getting their ideals from social media and don't get life is complicated
I don't think it's going away cause on twitter/bluesky ppl still police cartoon character as strongly as ever or don't get most guys date younger and vice versa

There's a recurring theme of how being inconsiderate to someone might not be a big deal for one, but super destructive for the other. Scott to Kim, Envy to Scott (even though they hint that he's repressing something worse), the rest of the band to Stephen, Ramona to Scott, and so on.

I think it's pretty good storytelling that Knives is the one who comes out on top first, after being treated poorly, despite being the youngest character (and deliberately written an outsider just due to her age) because she simply gets over Scott after being away for a while.

Oh yeah, scott fucks up kim big time same for others for him he's not doing anything of note, he didnt even remember he didnt tell Kim he was leaving whilsts to her that was the day she lost trust in most people and thought she wasn’t good enough at anything

Yeah Knives ends up being a mature one, completly one-upping scott

Though she still takes her chance to kiss him haha even if she ends up being grossed out by her own actions

I do hate Ramona

I do hate Ramona
That's fair.
I think the last two books redeem her pretty well, but I was always a Ramona defender.
She was literally brainwashed at parts and at worst was inconsiderate to others on a level similar to Scott, except she ran away instead of repressing shit.

I loved 'Takes Off' too, even if it turned some characters into jokes, but I could live with that.

I hate ramona cause Ive dealt with chicks like her not cause I think it's a shitty character, so in a way it's a compliment to the comic book

Never again

Especially now that blue hair means something completely different lol

Scott Pilgrim...

Y'all, I know this is for talking about comic books, but you're getting *virgin* all over my nice thread.

Just kidding, I read Scott Pilgrim quite a ways back, the contrast of the very cartoon art style and video game references with the surprisingly honest and adult admissions about relationships makes it memorable, no doubt. Notably, it doesn't portray Scott as a besmirched guy who got his heart broken through no fault of his own - there's countless examples, but my favorite one to point out is Tommy Wiseau's The Room - instead, we see that he just doesn't think about other people. Pretty much everyone in the book is shown to be the same, twenty-somethings still wrapped up in themselves; the Evil Ex's don't care what Ramona wants, Ramona ditched each of them without doing the emotional heavy lifting of resolving the relationships in the first place, everything with Kim....everyones struggling to be the adult who picks up the phone and says "I don't love you anymore, sorry, let's get lunch sometime."
