but at the end of the day Windows 7 and XP are just what I know and what I install.

I Love XP and 7, i have a old HP prodesk 400 G1 SFF that i dual boot those on.
I Don't like emulating OS's for older games <like Dosbox and VM's> they are handy Tools, and work fine, Don't get me Wrong, but just having the OS there, and the Problems that come with them. Just something Special about it

I use RHL for some maintenance work at my job, but use Windows for everything else.
I've thought about creating a separate partition for a Linux dual boot option but last time I messed around with that (admittedly over a decade ago) there were still driver issues that I didn't want to bother with.
Hows controller compatibility these days? Are NVME drives fully supported? What about RTX HDR?

Thought about trying garuda since i'd like having access to the AUR, but i'm willing to try any distro.
Easy to use would be nice if possible, i can get stuff to work but spending a day fixing one problem because the fix is convoluted for me isn't fun.

Most controllers work out of the box, NVME has been supported since forever, HDR isn't unique to RTX but hdr is available in at least kde desktop environment, though it's still in the beta stage.
As for the partition thing, i'd suggest against it, windows likes to break the linux install (this isn't linux's fault, it's windows), if you want to try linux take my advice and get a cheap ssd, if you don't like linux you can always use the drive for extra game and program installs, but more importantly it will save you a ton of headaches that windows could cause.

Personally I have being using Nobara for a while now which is based on Fedora, I heard good thing bazzite Linux too but never used , it might be worth it if you want a imutable distro.

I might give it a try, as much as i love the AUR endeavorOS is getting on my nerves, though more than the aur what i'll miss the most is probably pamac lol.

So i ended up going with garuda linux and so far have had no issues, well except getting cheat engine to work as that's convoluted as hell.
Effectively if i can figure out cheat engine i have no reason to ever get on windows again outside of maybe for some niche info i can't get through reading the drive on linux for some reason.

Linux user here too (POP). I've tried other distros but unfortunately ran into issues whether it be the UI didn't jive or programs that I use a lot didn't work very well so headed back to the old fave.

I still need to use Windows for work stuff, but use Unix-likes for parts of work where I can, and my personal machines.

I am aware of it , and I know it's one of the oldest Linux distro to exist, but by the time I was born it was already dead.

I absolutely love it. It's come a very long way.

I honestly love using Linux, Coming from a Windows User back in 2020. I ended up going all the way from Linux Mint to Fedora to Arch, It's honestly hard to choose what I like the best but Arch is Great but I also really love using Linux Mint a bit more for my tastes.

i Started dancing with penguins, rather recently. Bought a new computer with the dreaded windows 11, saw how fucking hungry for resources(even idle), the whole forced "Ai companionship", the fact that the system itself has became obtuse, simple configurations are Hidden behind the doors of agent 86.
I been having lots of fun learning terminal commands and being thankful of literally owning the computer, contrary of being owned my some unscrupulous company.

Linux is Easy, once you get use to it. Like jumping from XP to Windows 10. bit of a Learning Curve, but not that Hard. At-least not anymore ^_^

I didn't have many problems, entering linux, but i did see and read various introductory videos and articles before taking the leap. I also had experience with Dos(OS), that can help quite a bit with terminal usage.
I been using open source software since around 2005, so no problem there.

Honestly i think my problems with linux could all be summed up as a issue due to deciding to make my first true jump to linux being garuda linux, a arch based distro (anyone who knows linux knows the annoyances you might need to deal with when dealing with anything arch based).

I think if i started with a debian based distro i'd have less complaints, but i'm avoiding debian for some reasons i won't bring up here.

I used to use arch on my main pc, with few exceptions it was pretty well optimized for emulators so that was nice.

I did that 20 years ago:

I had a data structures teacher who said to us one day "the only useful command in windows is 'Format C:' "

so i took him at face value, i went home and printed out a copy of the gentoo installation manual and burned a disc with a stage one gentoo install... and just erased windows and started chrooting and emerging.

it wasnt a good idea, exactly... but i get mad cred from both penguins and cows when i tell them this story (jklol)... it took me about 2 weeks to get my mouse to work.

i'd recommend starting with arch/garuda/manjaro tho.

I would get a Samsung SSD when its on sale, and fit it with a USB enclosure. I leave this as NTFS to make connecting to other PCs easier.

I have my main onboard storage on SSDs separate from the main OS. This way if I ever do something stupid or need to nuke the entire OS, I still have my important personal/media files.

Theres a great program out there called "Timeshift", which functions similar to System Restore, where you can make backups of your OS at different dates and times, and set different time increments for it to make back up images. This way when you crash, you can restore your system to a more recent date and time. It can be ran inside the terminal too incase you fuck up the display drivers.(? Guilty)

I've been poking around with it since high school. Had a couple VMs set up to see which disto I liked best and settled on Fedora. Then for one reason or another I flipped over to the non-free Debian build (thank you Dell and your broadcom wifi cards and their non-free firmware). Dunno how long I used that but eventually made my way back to Fedora where I am now. Mind you this is on my laptop which I got for work and school. Underpowered and Linux so I don't play games on it though I'm hoping to use it for light game dev in the future. My main desktop is Win11 though.
