Any MMO fan servers out there?

There are a few SMT Imagine ones that are still up, I think one called Black Frost is still up but don't quote me on that, more have been popping up since Re:Imagine shut down

Recently started playing Warhammer Online: Return of Reckoning
its a community driven private server dedicated to preserving the original game

Im on (but not too often) on Schtserv for PSO on my Xbox.

And Im getting really getting caught by Horizon XI for FFXI. I played retail for a while and Horizon is just SO much better.

There are fan servers for practically every popular MMO of the 2000s, as well as "classic" servers for some of the big ones that have changed a lot over time. It's really just a matter of picking a game and sticking to it. Not that I'd know, I've never played an MMO for longer than a couple months... the closest I've gotten is PSO and Monster Hunter.

there's an anarchy online emulator being worked on

Haven't played it in some months, but OpenRSC is really fun. It's an open-source revival of RuneScape Classic and it's cool cause there's multiple different world types you can play. You got Preservation, which is basically a really accurate recreation of what RSC was like when the official servers closed down in 2018; Cabbage, which has the option for a faster XP rate and faster in-game action speeds plus bank notes like later versions of RuneScape, an RSC equivalent to the GE, new items, monsters, quests, etc; and 2001scape, which is a recreation of the game as it existed in May 2001. (And also two worlds which are based on Preservation and Cabbage which explictly allow botting in them)

It's really fun.

Someone's working on making an emu for Ai Sp@ce that I was following for a long time and also there's recently been a beta for Ar:PieL, and they're really hitting the grindstone with it. I've been a huge fan of games like Mabinogi and PSO, so kinda seeing and playing other private servers have been really interesting. I still hope someone can try to do a good Maplestory 2 (it was really cute). Also hoping to try XI soon but not sure which one to go to.

The game is great, but the co-op experience is unfortunately lacking, especially when playing with friends. The main issue is that progression isn’t truly shared. You can complete some quests and objectives together, but since you’re essentially joining your friend’s world, most progression only counts for them. For example, you can’t interact with many NPCs while in someone else’s world.

Another frustration is that world unlocks don’t carry over. If your friend activates something on the map, like a fast-travel/teleport point, it doesn’t activate for you. You’ll need to go back to your own world and unlock it separately. This is the biggest downside to co-op.

If the developers added fully shared progression so that all unlocks and milestones counted for every player, the game would be incredible. As a solo experience, I’d still recommend it. But since I mainly play in a group, it’s hard to recommend spending time on it until co-op is more fully developed.

For ff11, you won't really find anything emulating retail since a lot of the later content in the game is still being worked on. pretty much every server you find will be 75 era. horizonxi is prob the most populated, being 75 era with some custom stuff and a lot of class changes. there's a bunch of strictly vanilla 75. catseyexi's my favorite because even though it's 75 era, it has a ton of custom content, all jobs available, and a lot of retail's qol (trusts, teleports) and custom qol (stuff like group finder) if you don't have all the time in the world to invest in an mmo. it's also has up to treasures of aht urhgan expansion and is slowly adding in more and more of wings of the goddess. if you do have the time to spare, horizon's cool though.

there's also a pretty cool server with a ton of custom content called valhallaxi. too much content to list but is 90 cap which is cool because you don't find a lot of servers going past 75 era content. then there's zenithxi which is in the works still, but they plan on a progression server starting with vanilla 50 content, slowly adding expansions and going up to 75. seems cool

Black Frost, New Order, New World, New Moon.

new moon's my favorite, feels more like a normal mmo with gear progression instead of gambling on gear or just buying it from the shop. you can still find a lot of people doing lower level content, but once anyone gets the hang of how the game works it's pretty easy to solo. my issue is the power creep with each piece of new content. kinda breaks gear progression if you can just buy the current bis

ChromeRivals: https://chromerivals.net/ & https://wiki.chromerivals.net/index.php?title=Main_Page

Not sure how many people played Air Rivals / Ace Online back in the day but I do fondly remember it even if I was pretty bad at the game. ChromeRivals brings back old content while adding plenty of new content in return. The faction wars are still commonplace and PVP is also a popular activity, but new PVE content also is something worth doing and checking out.

There are a whole bunch of them. Just gotta look for one that seems fun enough.

I believe The Matrix Online is up now, I know someone was working on a Defiance one as well but I haven’t kept up on the status of that one.

I also just saw a video on the FreeLancer (sci if space PC game) MMO being active still. There was another space MMO I used to play but not sure if that one is still up.

On a similar but different note there are also communities of fanhosted servers for old PS2/PS3 games too like WarHawk and SOCOM
