Opinions and reviews about video games can vary in surprising ways, but if there’s something that always impacts, it’s the negative ones towards a game that you enjoyed. (It happened to me with Resident Evil 6 that I played on Switch) did it happen to you with any games you loved?

First thing that comes to mind is DmC: Devil May Cry that got (and still getting) a lot of crap. I liked it very much when I played it back in the day. Yeah devs said some stupid stuff about original DMCs but since I'm not a big fan of the series anyway I didnt know and would not care. Also I think Resident Evil: Dead Aim qualifies as a hated and/or forgotten game which I really like. Critics were not kind to it and gamers didnt vibe with it. That game did many things right before RE4 came out and shook the industry but nobody noticed. Its a short game with cool mechanics and the best thing is... its just fun to play. Resident Evil: Survivor is up there as well. Its probably not as fun but its a great piece of franchise's history that explores the original vision for the series (originally, Mikami wanted it to be first person). It got overhated back in the day and the echoes of that hate are still present to this day.

Loop8, yeah it's probably one of the worst jrpg I've ever played but I really liked it. I liked the visual and some parts of the story, the gameplay was fine and I loved how the game try to make you date your cousin but you can't date any of the males

My wife and I are still pretty big fans of DmC. From a gameplay perspective, it was primo! And I like that they took the series in a different direction. You can't truly make a franchise feel fresh unless you're willing to take a chance - and take a chance with that game, Capcom did! It might not have been what most fans wanted, but I certainly don't think it's bad.

Speaking of which...

I loved The 3rd Birthday. Still do. ProTip: skip all the cutscenes, and just focus on the gameplay and soundtrack 😉

Back to Capcom games, P.N.03 is one of my favorites on the Gamecube. It got OK-ish reviews when it came out, but the word of mouth amongst my friends was abysmal! I rented it and liked it, and when I was talking to a friend about it, they held their nose, made a face, and handed me their own copy off their shelf. "I regret ever buying this - just get it away from me." Yep - it's the copy I currently own 😇

I guess The 3rd Birthday and P.N.03 are both similar in that regard, in that I view each game almost more like a glorified music video than I do an actual game! I skip all the story bits in both, and love grinding to get the best equipment. Just fun, straightforward action games that work best when you shut your brain off...

Honorable mentions go to the plethora of movie-based games on classic consoles. Another user mentioned ET for (I'm assuming) the Atari 2600, and I'm also a fan of Tron Deadly Discs and The Empire Strikes Back on the same console. On the NES, I genuinely like Friday The 13th, Jaws, Nightmare on Elm Street, and Jurassic Park - no matter what certain angry nerds on the Internet might say about them 😝

And it's the first and only RE game to have a licensed song over the end credits.

I actually quite enjoyed Sonic Forces. It isn’t a great game but I did get some entertainment out of it. Although I may be a little biased because it was the first Sonic game I played back in 2017.

Cyberpunk 2077 at launch. I took so much shit and hate for so long despite having a very stable version on PC and I was

Took years and now its hip to like it.
Now I only pray the next game they look forward to suffers the same fate and theyre put in the same position as me.

mother fans don't like the first one, but it's my favorite one. people tend to ignore it and just praise 2 and 3, but i would argue that mother 1 has the most interesting plot and coolest style. sure, i like mother 2 and 3 and how they look, but i love that the first game looks like peanuts !!!

i've always had love for the game Guardian's Crusade, it was known for it's faults but it still had it's quirky charm.

I have plenty but the main two are Final Fantasy Mystic Quest for the SNES and Seek and Destroy for PS2. I do recognize the games are subpar, but I love them anyways.

In Mystic Quest the music makes the game and while the visuals are nothing to write home about, it is also one of the earliest rpg's that didn't have random encounters.

In Seek and Destroy, it is the only game that I know that let me play as a tank in a 3d environment with impossible weapons to comical levels. One of the bosses literally squishes you like a cartoon character, and another your tank flies in order to fight it.

A lot of people don't like Mega Man X8 but I really do enjoy that game. The reason being is that it was clearly rushed out the door with its auto-scrolling levels that take up a majority of the game and very bland level design. But last year I beat that game again and I still enjoyed it. I love the soundtrack, the English voice acting, being able to play as 2 Maverick Hunters at once and all the power ups and weapons. Zero having different weapons is really cool.

Until recently, I'd have said The Witness, but I've come across people who know what's up.

So I guess I'd say Fallout 76? I spent 700 hours on it and it was like a daily addiction, even though it is clearly flawed and... if I keep going back to it, that has to mean I like it... right?

But still, there is difference between genuinely subpar games (Sonic '06), and those suffered from being reviewed by people who could not grasp the game's true quality.

And the Natural Doctrine is the latter.

I am not jesting, when I say that this is the best strategy game in terms raw gameplay, across all 5 generations of PlayStation.
In fact it plays more so like TTRPG then any other video game I've ever played. It has a very grounded apporach. You have to be very precise with all of your actions, and your movement's positioning, in order to beat it. Even if you started with the best loot available in the game, you would still have died in the starting area, if you chose not to respect the flow of this game. All your your in-game resources are greatly limited, as to make you rely more on your tactical analysis and ability to think a step ahead before each move. Instead of just being dependent on the raw numbers alone.
It's fantastic.

Unfortunatly, due to the developer's limited resources, the game itself looks average in terms of graphics and the overall polishing. So it didn't exactly capture any mainstream audience. It looks and plays like a remaster of a forgotten PC classic from 2001, both in a good and bad way.
What's worse however, is that it was advertised as a "jRPG". Which brought in a community filled with people to whom it's commonly to have two left hands and a tactical insight of a dry brick.
And so ever since the launch, it got a "Godhand treatment". By being relentlessly review bombed by "critics" and players who got hard-stuck on level one.
If you have ever wondered, why the big companies water-down their flagship titles, like Capcom and the Monster Hunter, then this is the exact reason why.

So, if you are of one of those anime people who rather see "big number go BOOM", then perphas look elsewhere.
However, if you are a pure strategy gameplay enthusiast, then Natural Doctrine is the best thing a PlayStation can get you.

Did people hate Bioshock Infinite? I thought that game was alright
I didn't quite like it but it isn't so bad. Mostly the weapon/powers felt like a step down from 1; the story didn't bother me.

I mean, players keep going back to Dead By Daylight, yet I've never seen anyone hate that game more than a player with thousands of hours in it.

Game play is fine but nothing like what was promised during development. Story is ass; I hate the direction they took with Daisy Fitzroy. "Both sides are bad" can be written well but that isn't the case in Infinite.

I loved Skyward Sword even while it was still acceptable to claim it's the worst Zelda game in existence.
