I always seen an opening song like the cover of a book or comic: it's supposed to be the first thing used to spur your
curiosity and get you in the mood of the work. While the ending, depending from the series, could be a soothing piece,
an upbeat one or a more dramatic one, often used to enhance some events of the story or a specific mood.
Sometime it happened that I was more into the ending song, seeing it as being better at representing the mood of the show. Here's some cases:
"Forever", Supersonic soldier Borgman's first ED.
The first two Op (even the second Ed) are much more upbeat and, I guess, more fittign for an adventurous series. Yet, the more melancholy mood of Forever was very fitting for the more serious aspects of the series (necessity to build up strength and courage to withstand the impending doom by unknown forces, characters who forfeit their humanity for a dream, just to see it robbed by the invasion and so on)
"鎮-requiem-", Betterman's first ED.
Betterman was a weird, (yet very interesting, imho) series and the Op and Ed where fittingly as much strange. The Ed really caught me by surprise, after the soothing, enigmatic Op: it had quite the chilling element in it, it seemed almost the chant of some bizarre enemy in the series. The imagery used was very fitting too. The second ED is the same song albeit with slightly different lyrics and added animation, to better represent evens in the series. It's one of those ED I never skip.
"Burning Love", Dancouga's first ED.
While I always loved Dancouga as a whole, the Ops never got my attention. Especially after hearing Burning Love, who evokes a lot of characteristics of the show. Maybe they just wanted to experiment a bit? Bizarrely enough, the second op, an upbeat love song, was rearranged for SRW GC into a super badass version for Dancouga BGM.
"Sayonara no Dessin", Maison Ikkoku 5th Ed.
This is more a choice amongst a lot of favorites, because Maison Ikkoku OST is quite fantastic in every aspect, especially Ops and Eds. Sayonara of Dessin is one of the highlights, thanks also to the peculiar style used in it. Most of the Ops and Eds of Maison Ikkoku were quite nice in experimenting with style and animation.
These are the first that came to mind but I knew much more. What are yours?
