About Game With Ranking System

Ranking should only be available as New Game+
Ehh there are plenty of games that balance the rankings around NG so doing it in NG+ just trivializes it.

Ninja Gaiden 1 is probably my favorite example of a ranking system in a game. Fairly cosmetic, balanced around the tools you have available up to that point and it doesn't punish you for using items. The worst part about games like DMC is that they give you items, but inherently disincentivize you from using them by punishing you with score. I feel like the game should just balance how many items it gives you or lets you use per stage rather than harshly punish you for using them.

I guess it depends on the game to be honest and how it is implemented.

Is a good way to invite people to just play the game again and aim for a better grade, just a silly thing. Even better if it comes with unlockables.

Now the how is also really important. I dont think it would fit very well a game like Resident Evil if the rank you room or chapters. But I think it does fit to give you a grade at the end of the run.

I don't know if some of you feels like this but i always find myself having a hard times completing any game that rank or "judge" you on every mission you played, like for example in megaman zero you got the ranking system from F to S and the boss will show you more of their move if you're ranked B or higher (IIRC) which makes it like the developer wanna balance the games.

Anyway the thing that give me a hard time was instead of playing the game normally i would play it like some crazy sweat, remembering every single enemy spawn point to avoid taking damage like at all and even planning every single move to clear as much enemy as fast as i can so i can keep my zero at S rank, it's also the same when i played Armored Core, or even Megaman Battle Network, i always chase that sweet S rank completion. And that's why i always think that game without this ranking system are easier just because i don't feel obliged to play it perfectly.

But that's me what about you guys?
I don't really care unless it affects gameplay in some way. I do remember spending spending a lot of time trying to get S ranks in Sonic Adventure 2, but I can't remember why now other than you needed to do it to unlock something. I also remember trying to do it in Mischief Makers because it was tied to the ending or something. I don't really like that kind of stuff, but if it's just for bragging rights or whatever it doesn't really matter to me.

Oh good pull, SA2 has a stellar rank system!!! You only really need to do it to unlock multiplayer stuff on console or if you want to unlock the bonus karts or Green Hill Zone on Gamecube. Very unnecessary, but very fun to shoot for them! Going for S ranks in SA2 was great because it forced me to look at and engage with stages in new ways.

i usually try to do as best i can the first time, but leave getting a perfect score for later if i care.

I feel ya. Anyone that has ever bothered to play for ranking will probably miss it in other games. I would love if games like God of War (greek saga) had ranking systems but i suppose not every game is or should be designed with perfect play in mind. That's when the community starts creating their own challenges, and there's beauty in that too.
Beautifully put. As long as you're immersed and present in the experience and getting something out of it, that's all that matters! I do love a good grading system though for action games.

I've been wondering (it wasn't that related in ranking system)

Since your profile picture was from Kingdom Hearts i wonder if you played normal first then try the harder difficulty later or just straight up challenging the extreme difficulty '>'

some games i did normal mode the first time then played proud/critical later. others i did the higher difficulty modes first time.

Green Hill Zone on Gamecube.
That's it. That's the one. That's what it was. That's why I did it. I remember it feeling somewhat unsatisfying in the end given how much effort I put in and how long it took me. But still pretty cool to play Green Hills in SA2. I seem to remember that Sonic level with the rails taking a ridiculous amount of tries to the point where that level's still burned into my brain despite not playing the game for like 20 years now.

I agree that Green Hills feels a bit feeble compared to the efforts done to reach that level. I wouldn't have minded if it was a reward from doing all Missions, A-ranks being optional.

Was it Final Rush? Crazy Gadget gave me more troubles.

oh i hated MM zeros ranking system, i never cared enough to S rank all over MMZ1, i got all the way to the FINAL BOSS on MMZ2 and said F it A rank is fine lol (can't get hit more than 5 times... the ENTIRE final stage, which includes boss rematches against every single boss again... yeah i'm not that crazy good at megaman sorry lol)
i know A ranks got ex skills, i don't remember any S rank unlocks

now, i liked sonic adventure 2's ranking system, definitely made me play the game more.
In MMZ1 ranking system is so cruel, it punish you if you use a cyber elf which is ironic because cyber elfs are ONE OF THE MAIN GIMMICKS

Wait doesn't the later series also punish you if you decided to use cyber elves? Even the one who used to upgrade your stat permanently?

Yuuup! Final Rush and Final Chase are bruuutal to get an A rank on cause it is so easy to mess up just a little bit and plummet to your demise. I just went through and 100% completed the game for the first time ever last year and I honestly had a blast with it, but those two stages easily took the most tries and caused me the most grief. Green Hill is definitely a rather short reward for such a monstrous undertaking (it took me 50ish hours and I used the infinite food glitch to max out my chaos as quickly as possible) but the journey was a real treat for the most part.

I don't expect 100% to be easy to do nor having a massive reward (Mario Sunshine had a stupid cloth for Mario) but sometimes this feels like they quickly made it...

SA2 was made for the 10th anniversary of the franchise so I see why they included the genesis of the franchise (pun intended) yet I would've loved to see Marble, Spring Yard, Labyrinth, Starlight and Scrap Brain all in the same level as if Sonic did an "Island Tour" of South Island.

I'm not sure. Is Crazy Gadget the one in the space station. Or whatever it is? If so I do remember that one being a pain as well. But I didn't really like that level in general. I actually liked the one that was mostly rails.

I actually do enjoy those levels but your timing needs to be pretty perfect to S rank them and if I remember right, you pretty much need to do things like take shortcuts by making perfect blind jumps from the upper rails to lower ones in order to finish fast enough. I'm not sure how many hours everything took me. I was a teenager when I played it. I didn't use any glitches and I do remember grinding a fuckload for Chao food. I probably played the game for the better part of a year if not longer. It's actually one of the games I still have a physical copy of but I don't think I'll ever try to 100% it again.

The ranking system in most RE games tend to be pretty straightforward, and rewards repeat playthroughs.

Yea Crazy Gadget was the space station one with the weird colored platform gravity swap area at the very end.

Yea it is a mix of really needing to figure out what rings/capsules to get and maximizing the few enemy encounters you do get to have as many points as possible without having to super speed. Definitely the tightest levels to max rank but there's at least a little room for error. Even as a grown adult that took me a while so I couldn't imagine how much it would have taken outta me if I was trying that as a child haha. Beating the game already took a bit outta me back when I was tiny, so props to you for going all out like that!

It was ironic because the chao garden was the main reason I never tried until last year. I didn't know about the infinite feed exploit and I just assumed it would take far too long and tedious to grind it all out manually. I'm glad I finally did dive into the chao garden a bit more though because my goodness spending time with the chao really was so lovely.

I don't think it actually took a ridiculous amount of time. I think I mostly just played through levels collecting whatever colour of those vial things I needed until I filled up the bar and just did that until I maxed out a chao of each type. I had more time back then though and I kind got into the whole just raising the chao thing until I started actually trying to complete everything.

yep, no subtanks, no health increases, no whatever else they upgrade.
MMZ2 was much more fun to A rank,
every other game just turned out frustrating and i didnt' bother (used cheats to unlock rank exclusive stuff)

SA2 you unlock outfit changes when you get all the emblems on a character
on dreamcast you unlock chao, metal sonic, amy, big, tikal and chaos 0 on DREAMCAST by getting all A ranks. and they're playable in singleplayer mode.
2 BATTLE already has them all for 2 player mode immediately on a new save, and not in singleplayer
you get 3 more menu themes via emblems on 2 Battle only.
