You know? I LOVE Steampunk, but a song I was listening to kinda hit the nail in the head (ha!) with something:

Is it the future or the past? Who even cares! Cuz it's a blast!

That's a really good point — WHEN'S this whole thing supposed to be? Victorian era? WW1? Some "retro future"? It's kind of a timeless cool that both grounds itself in a time period and repeatedly challenges it... Which I guess is where the "punk" part comes in :D

Anyway! Discuss!

As a Mecha fan I really love when they apply the steampunk theme to the genre.

I suppose, steampunk is an alternative future. Something like timeline that branched off few decades ago. Eventually, it could be a dystopian future, where a lot of technology has been lost.

I always thought its alternate history starting from the time of the industrial revolution, not very futury (new word)

I can't wait to watch the Big-O, I'm so excited to finally get too it. Perry-san, could you tell me what the other things are here? They look so cool

I personally always thought Steampunk was intentionally set inside the Victorian-era, so it's an alternate dabble on history like many have said here before.
It makes me think of the many other kinds of "-punk" that exists, like the one most prominently used in the first two Bioshock games, I believe they go by a weird hybrid of diesel-punk and bio-punk.

It's seriously fascinating stuff really, and steampunk is no exception!

The first pic is The Vision of Escaflowne a Mecha anime from the studio who made the Gundam series. It's kinda like what if you fuse Final Fantasy and Mobile Suit Gundam. The third pic is the PS2 game Steambot Chronicles an action-adventure game with rpg elements set in an Industrial Revolution-esque world.
