Whenever you think about the highest
grossing films of the 1990s you will probably think of Titanic, Star Wars the Phantom Menace, Forest Grump, and the Lion King.
All iconic films and then the 4th highest grossing film, Independence Day featuring Will smith and directed by Roland Emmerich, the same dude who also made 2012, The Day after Tomorrow, and more films you probably never heard of because Independence Day is his highest grossing film ever. Independence Day isn’t remembered much nowadays, heck this is probably the first time you ever heard of this film, it hasn’t kept its iconic title as well as other films from the same decade, and also has some major pacing problems, 2 hours and the best and most iconic scene is like in the first 20 or 30 minutes, anything after isn’t really remembered, but enough of this, let’s get to the plot.
The plot:
The story of Independence Day begins on July second at the Apollo 11 landing site, where the mothership is making its way towards the Earth which alerts the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence Institute in SETI New Mexico
and soon after the White House, Pentagon, and president (Played by Bill Pullman) are alerted, then the news and people are alerted, meanwhile in New York City, we are introduced to David Levinson (Played by Jeff Goldblum), and later discovers the aliens are sending signals while everyone is panicking about what on earth is going on, also a small detail I noticed is that they can just look up to see the ufos, the movie says they can’t see them because they are hiding behind the moon but no,
in this shoot from the film you can see they aren’t hiding behind the moon, I understand it’s to drive up the suspension but they did a bad job at doing that anyways back to the review. We meet even more of all cast with people I don’t remember the name of so I’m just gonna name the one person from this scene that actually matters, Russell Casse (played by Randy Quaid)
he’s a drunk pilot, that’s it, had enough of meeting new people? TOO BAD ITS TIME TO MEET WILL SMITH BABY!!!!! (I forgot who he played but to be honest do you even care if I remember or not?).
His character in this film he is in the military and he dreams of becoming a astronaut (that’s why his locker has NASA and space pictures), he’s also married to girl, I forgot who her name is and I don’t know who plays him and I don’t care moving on. The first ufo makes it to Moscow, and now Moscow is in panic,
(The first image that popped up was of a trading card, thought is was funny so that’s why it has the logo, there isn’t a news channel called ID4 Independence Day last time I checked) and now two are heading towards NYC and Washington D.C., how lovely, I hope their plan isn’t to blow up the cities, that would suck wouldn’t it, now there are pilots flying in the air calling the president reporting no viability,

they instantly die, David who I’m just gonna call nerd guy because I forgot his name and had to look back to find out what his name was does some research and finds out the Ailen signals is actually a countdown to something, perhaps they bringing Elvis back to life, idk.
also nerd guy is the only guy doing his job while everyone else is to busy panicking, like dude, they are being paid to research the Ailen signals , ITS THEIR JOB!!And nerdy McBob is the only guy doing his dang job and everyone thinks he’s crazy for doing his job, so instead of doing their jobs they decide to evacuate the city and quit their jobs I have said job eight times so far.

I’m starting to think he was actually drunk on set and they just decided to go with it since half the budget went to something, I forgot what but watching some more might remind me where all the sweet money went, the aliens visit president guy
and also take a bite out of the big apple
they also visit London, Paris, Rome and Vatican City, Germany, Bombay, and Chicago.
Drunk pilot dude claims aliens abducted him and did experiments on him finding out humanity’s weaknesses, yeah he’s very drunk, just ignore, also remember those other people I forgot and didn’t consider important earlier before I introduced Drunk dude? Know they important now, they are Drunk dudes kids, well they are technically teenagers but I don’t care I’m calling them kids cause it’s shorter, and before we move on it’s time that I bring up Will Smiths kid and dog too, I think the kids name was JJ and the dog was named Boomer. Ok so the next scene I don’t know how to describe so here’s the scene

So after a lot of death the US military attacks one of the ufos and fails after it is revealed that it has a protective shied and that it also has small ufo jets that also have shields so everyone dies besides Will Smith because he has plot armor.
And now time for nothing, all of the interesting stuff has happened and there’s a while before the end so heres a brief summary of Independence Days second half
- Aliens attack military base
- Will smith and Ailen fight in Grand Canyon and he wins
- Will smith punches Ailen and knocks it out
- Girl if you remember her finds a working car in the ruins of LA and drives to the military base the Aliens attacked and doesn’t know it’s destroyed
- Drunk pilot dude and kids start a RV roadtrip with other RV people
- Will Smith finds the RV people
- President goes to Area 51 where they have ufos and Ailen corpses and meets scientist freak
- Ailen research goes wrong killing everyone including scientist freak
- President and Ailen talk to each other in the films goofiest scene, just look

- US military uses missile to attack a ufo heading towards Houston and fails
- Girl makes it too destroyed military base
- Will Smith uses a helicopter to go to destroyed military base and finds girl
- Nerd dude inspects ufo and creates a virus that will deactivate the ufo shields that is also a bomb that will destroy the mothership
- Nerd dude and will smith are the pilots of the ufo for some reason
- Every single army on Earth comes to Area 51 to attack the Ailen ufo while nerd guy and will smith go to space to attack the mothership
Ok so now we got all of that out of the way I’ll like to talk about the alien’s, the Ailen designs are pretty genius, it’s kinda hard to describe it but they have flesh armor and on the inside the classic Ailen design you probably seen before and love,
that’s it now here is the finale of Independence Day. Before the aliens arrive the president gives his iconic speech

Anyways Will Smith and Nerd Guy use the ufo from Area 51 to go to the mothership to plant the virus which also functions as a bomb but it’ll take a while to get there so every pilot is now fighting the aliens
yeah the virus has done it’s thing but the bomb has a countdown so we gotta wait for that, yeah just image planes launching missiles at the ufo, oh wait they can also attack the smaller ufo
And will smith and nerd guy are stuck in some sort of ufo jet parking lot thing in the mothership

Anyways the ufo is making it very close to Area 51, and everyone used their missiles beside one, DRUNK GUY!!!! So he is the last hope but his missile is jammed, so with no options he decides to sacrifice himself

Which causes the ufo to blow up but will smith and nerd guy are still in the mothership (the bomb hasn’t exploded yet) so running out of options they make their presence clear
They also launch the bomb too then while trying to escape other ufo jets begin to chase them and the door is closing too but because of plot armor will smith and nerd guy escape right before the door closes and the aliens blow up, so does the mothership
and they make their way back to earth and JJ, will smiths kid gets his fireworks
