20 years ago AVGN launched his YouTube channel

can't believe that it's legit been 2 decades since that series started.

it's kind of crazy to think that something so big was grown from just a couple of friends goofing around.

I know that people have a bad opinion on the post-screen-wave era but honestly at this stage I'm just glad that James had the opportunity to make the good stuff he did make. Might even rewatch some of the classic episodes in honour of the anniversary.

Sorry but what's Screen-Wave?

It's the multi-channel Network that runs the channel for James. They've been involved with writing and producing the nerd and other Cinemassacre stuff since like 2017.

Technically it's Screenwave not Screen-Wave but I was being trigger happy with my hyphens.

Lol, just finished listening to the AVGN copycat episode. I enjoy some of the more cinematic episodes but not really the lore ones, so much. He had these great moments of brilliance that I used to think really hid a creative personality, but he could only get through to people by playing the Nerd. Now I think was creatively tapped out probably ten years ago (with the occasional moment of brilliance), which I get. I wrote on a website for about eight years and to this day could care less if I ever write creatively again. Now I write a lot of technical documentation and tutorials, and that suits me just fine.

But despite that, I still have to recognize how much he contributed to the direction of gaming content on Youtube (and possibly helped spark the collecting bug for people who wouldn't have otherwise), even though I really think when he started out, the trait that drew so many people to him was his swearing

I think people are a little too harsh on James for the quality of his current content with Screen Wave. Not to say I don't enjoy a good tear down or riff on modern AVGN, but it was never exactly "high art," so people really need to calm down and give the guy a break.

Though honestly, in this age of "The Cinemasscare Truth" and "Slob Era" of AVGN, I do kinda think Irate Gamer fans had something of the last laugh in a way. Chris Bores always maintained a certain autonomy over his admittedly derivative product and only makes an Irate Gamer thing when he feels like it and when he has the time between doing FNAF toy unboxings and protecting America from evil spirits.

What a legend.

He's having a family so I cannot blame him for taking more time.
You are probably not aware of this, but that's a bit of a meme within the AVGN community — James has gone to the "I have a family" well too many times when inactivity hit the channel.

I personally think that putting his family first is not only his call, but the right thing to do — but AVGN fans can be vicious like that.

Ehhhhh... I don't know.

IG even copied James's off-camera cues without knowing what they were for (like him leaning to the side on an earlier episode, completely ignoring that James did that to read a taped script set on a nearby wall), which is an insane level of plagiarism.

He certainly landed on his feet better than most, but it was a crash-landing at best.

What kind of insensitive person would not be aware of what having a family would imply?

You have to admit though. In retrospect, considering all the kinds of plagiarism people get accused of, are guilty of on youtube, and continue make money off of doing on youtube (eg. that hbomberguy video on plagiarism), Chris Bores' plagiarism was fairly benign. I remember being in school and having to rewrite papers multiple times because the professors demanded rewrites to avoid plagiarism and do proper citation, and early youtube was certainly not the place to expect that level of professionalism and even now in modern youtube, people know much better than they did in 2007, they just don't care anymore, which makes Chris' crimes seem harmless or even cute in comparison.

Considering how hard people went at Irate Gamer for his copycatism (and yeah, he did bring much of that on himself), it's funny to see a lot of the AVGN fanbase rag on James and call him a pale copy of his younger self or for Screenwave to get in trouble for gross plagiarism themselves. Meanwhile, Chris Bores is just over here pretending to be a minecraft puppet and exorcising Sonichu medallions.

And I think one thing to keep in mind is that all the "angry game reviewers" are pretty much gone now. Literally everybody who attacked Irate Gamer for being a copycat or who was also a copycat themselves but tried to act like they weren't as bad of a copycat is gone. It's pretty much just James Rolfe, Chris Bores & Doug Walker. I think Irate Gamer fans tend to be a little less weird than James' fans, cause we're in on a joke that AVGN fans don't ever seem to get.

True. Maybe "terminally online" people that never had responsibilities...
Eh, that's a bit harsh.

that hbomberguy video on plagiarism
I actually had a lot of issues with that particular video... that guy has an almost "knack" for muddling his own points under a layer of virtue-signalling and personal attacks that I have come to really despise.

I think that's both a shame and a relief at the same time — I subbed to channels like RinryGameGame originally because I was sick and tired of hearing angry reviewers being worse copies of each other, but I kinda miss them.
