On July 11th, 2015, we lost an important figure from Nintendo and the entire video game industry. Satoru Iwata. It's been 10 years since his passing, and I still miss him to this day.

How sad that one of the masterminds and at the same time the former president of the Big N such as Iwata passed away and that he made great games of the company along with the entire team of the Big N and as well as its derivatives. Rest in Peace Satoru Iwata Thanks for Everything. 🙏🏻😇.

He is gone, but his final wish, the Switch, has come to be the ultimate Switch sucess, for good as well as for bad, Rest In Piece brave warrior, your smarts allowed Pokemon Gold to have the most memorable Post Game ever on Pokemon and your will to reduce your own salary so your employees can get full pay will always be remembered, thanks a lot Iwata

Even if some of his choices could be considered dubious (like Nintendo stopping aiming for power in favour of gimmicks), that he had a thick accent when he spoke at E3 conferences (back when Nintendo were still doing them) and that overall Nintendo struggled a lot during the 2010's until the Switch I really feel like there's a hole at Nintendo. Each time I see the current president at Nintendo's direct I often need to recall myself that he's the current CEO of the company and not some random employee presenting the games lol.

Either way I really miss the Fils-Aimé/Iwata era. We still have Miyamoto but he's barely active in the games.

It is my firm believe that Sakurai went above and beyond with Smash Brothers Ultimate to honor Iwata. It's insane the amount of guest characters, a legal nightmare but he did it.
Sakurai could've been the CEO of Nintendo I wouldn't have minded.

As for the legal nightmare I'm ready to accept a new Smash game without any third party guest character.

Dubious? He proved everyone that graphics didn't matter, that race wasn't going to work for them and they made a console with a single idea in mind. To make it as accessible so everyone could play; and part of their strategy was the Wiimote, the gimmick played part of it. Because even my uncles and nieces could play Wii Sports, and that was all that Nintendo wanted.

and???

IDK if anyone brought this up in the thread but I remember reading about this. In every switch's coding there exists the NES ROM of Iwata's first game. Meaning that every switch contains a piece of Iwata for all gamers to carry with them. I think that's bittersweet.

And letting down hardcore gamers in the same way. Players from the N64/GC era kinda dropped Nintendo because they wouldn't be interested in playing casual games.

Also when the PS360 came out everyone were still having eyes on graphics. The PS3 was another huge leap forward.

The Wiimote is nice but still a big gimmick and honestly I couldn't blame those who would rather have a real pad on the X360 or PS3 (discounting the Sixaxis focused games) and people with disabilities would enjoy it less anyway.

Well, it makes it a bit harder to understand but thankfully most conferences had an english speaking interpreter.

Neat, it should be playable from the Switch menu as an easter egg imo.

The hardcore minority that didn't amount to sales wasn't going to save them from the financial hole that the GameCube put them in. No amount of F-Zeros, Earthbounds or even Zelda at that time was enough. They had to shift directions, they took the biggest gamble ever to get out and it payed off, outselling the competition almost 3 to 1, the competition that was a "huge leap forward" for $599 in a looming economical recession.

and the whole "letting hardcore gamers down" facade was never a thing, The Wii was so welcoming and a money maker, many companies could put their games and see success. We had Madworld, Muramasa, Monster Hunter Tri, Sin & Punishment, Xenoblade. Excellent, enthusiast level games. The gamecube didn't have as many.

Well, according to older fans Nintendo died with the latest member of the legacy family of the company (Yamauchi).

I don't agree with them but I understand their sentiment and now we got a similar generation of Nintendo fans that also consider that Nintendo is dead after Iwata's passing.

F-zero and Mother not getting new games can be understood but I've seen how sometimes they played too safe (with the Wii U) to the point where people got bored of too casual games. Even NSMB Wii kinda felt a bit too easy even if there's a ninth world.

The PS3 drastically dropped its price by 2007 - 2008 while the PS2 was still selling like hotcakes.

Maybe it was indeed the right choice to still be producing hardware (unlike Sega and Atari) yet it felt like it was a different company with the same IPs doing them.
