Game Description:
SegaSonic the Hedgehog is a Action-Adventure/Platformer 3D video game published by Sega Enterprises and developed by Sega AM3, Sonic Team released on 1993 for the Arcade.
SegaSonic the Hedgehog is an isometric platformer in which up to three players (controlling either Sonic the Hedgehog, Ray the Squirrel, or Mighty the Armadillo) must fight their way through Eggman Island and escape with their lives. But Robotnik won't make it easy - in each and every room, there's a series of death traps that can spell death if Sonic and company aren't quick, as well as enemies whose sole purpose is to see Sonic dead. One too many slip-ups, and Sonic's a dead hedgehog. Scattered throughout the courses, however, are rings that increase health as well as boost players' scores.
This game is the debut of the characters Ray and Mighty and the first time Sonic was ever voiced in a game as this was released some months before Sonic CD. The game was planned to be released overseas and even has a full complete English translation but was cancelled for some reason. The English localization is disabled and has to be switched on via emulator cheat codes. Of course the vocals are only in Japanese. Robotnik seemed to be the most chatty out of all the characters.
The game is controlled by a trackball control ball thing that you used to roll the characters into whichever direction and a single button used for jumps and attacks and action events. It can be played solo or up to 3 players in co-op. While it is technically a platformer the gameplay consists more of proper timing of dodging obstacles and traps and correct timing for event sequences instead of jumping around. The "control ball" thing makes it awkward to play using a d-pad or arrow keys and some configuring might need to be done before you can feel comfortable with the controls.
An in depth technical analysis of this game along with a handful more cheat codes (that I couldn't figure out how to properly insert into the sonic.xml file in the cheat.7z) can be found here.
I included a .txt file explaining how to play it in English, but I will echo it here too:
How to Play:
(Using RetroArch)
- Copy the cheat.7z file to your RetroArch system directory for MAME (on Windows with default install location it's C:\RetroArch-Win64\system\mame)
- Load the sonic.zip with the MAME core. (If you plan to just play it as is then there's nothing else needed to do)
- Go to Quick Menu -> Core Options and in System set Cheats to On.
- In the loaded content press the keys you have set for Select + X button to open the MAME UI menu.
- In the menu go to Cheat Options and enable the English Dialogue Bubbles Patch cheat.
- Restart the content through the RetroArch menu and the game should now be translated.
