English Translation Patch v0.61
Source: https://github.com/ralfguth/langrisser3-english

What Gets Patched

  • All 125 dialogue sections translated to English (in-game cutscenes, battle dialogue, tutorials)
  • Menus and UI (skills, items, unit classes, battle text)
  • Custom bigram font generated from embedded glyph data (1395 bigram pairs)
  • Original disc structure preserved — no file relocation, no sector corruption

Project History

The Langrisser III Saturn translation has a long history of community effort:

  • 1996 — Career Soft / NCS / Masaya released Langrisser III for Sega Saturn in Japan. It was never officially localized for Western markets.
  • 2001 — CyberWarriorX (Theo Berkau) released an alpha v0.2 patch that translated the menus and UI, reverse-engineered the Saturn disc format, and created a bigram font system for Latin text. The dialogue remained untranslated (mojibake). He also built tools to dump and reinsert text, along with partially translated scenes that were never inserted. The patch included work by Oogami on the original script.
  • 2006-2010 — Akari Dawn picked up the translation effort. To their surprise, a significant portion of the script had already been translated by the original team. They completed the full English script for all 125 scenario sections and uploaded it to GameFAQs, hoping someone would insert it into the game.
  • 2001-2025 — For over two decades, the community waited. The game was fully hacked and fully translated, but nobody managed to put it all together. Several projects attempted to combine CWX's insertion tools with the Akari Dawn scripts, but all hit dead ends: corrupted dialogue data, broken name screens, and encoding mismatches caused by undocumented assumptions in the original tooling. The situation was described on CDRomance as "waiting for someone to step up and put it all together."
  • 2026 — This project (v0.4) was built from scratch. Instead of inheriting CWX's insertion tools, we wrote a new pipeline: a custom bigram encoder, pixel-level font tile generation from embedded glyph data, and an in-place D00.DAT patcher that respects the Saturn engine's sector-based file access. All 125 scenario sections are now translated and playable.

What Makes v0.4 Different

Previous attempts failed because they inherited binary patches without fully understanding the Saturn engine's constraints:

  • D00.DAT is sector-locked. The game reads dialogue data by absolute sector position, not by ISO directory entries. Moving D00.DAT breaks all dialogue. Our patcher writes English text directly into the original sectors.
  • Each section has a fixed size budget. English text that exceeds the original Japanese section's byte count corrupts the next section. Our encoder reports overflows and the translation is shortened to fit.
  • UI tiles are interspersed in the font. The game engine references specific tile indices for UI decorations (borders, icons). Our tile map skips these positions so they're never overwritten.
  • The bigram system is the key to fitting English text. Japanese uses one 16x16 tile per character. English uses bigrams: two 8px letters per tile. This effectively doubles the character density per tile code, making English text fit in the same space.

Technical Overview

The build pipeline:

  1. Reads the Japanese Track 01 disc image (raw 2352-byte sectors, Mode 2 Form 1)
  2. Extracts FONT.BIN (1691 tiles x 32 bytes) and D00.DAT (3.8 MB, 125 sections) from the ISO9660 filesystem
  3. Generates 1438 English font tiles from embedded glyph bitmaps, patched onto the JP font base (preserving UI tiles)
  4. Encodes 125 English scripts into 2-byte tile codes using greedy bigram matching
  5. Writes the translated text into each D00.DAT section in-place (same size, same sectors)
  6. Applies menu/UI translation patches (same-size overlays)
  7. Recalculates EDC/ECC checksums for all modified sectors
  8. Assembles the final CUE/BIN disc image with all 22 audio tracks preserved

Old v0.2 description;

"The full translation that never materialized"

This game is fully hacked and fully translated but to this day nobody inserted it in game.
The hacking was done by Cyber Warrior X, who released the current alpha patch (22 years ago!) that translates only the menus. The rest of the script is just the mojibake you see in the screenshots.
He hacked the font too. The VWF font fits lots of text on screen nicely.

The situation has been stale for years, waiting for someone to step up and put it all together.
It will not be easy, you still need rom hacking knowledge but here are the tools to get you started:

  • Backup of Cyber Warrior X git: Contains tools to dump and reinsert text from/to the game. Also contains tons of translated scenes that were never inserted in the game.
  • Full script translation by Akari_Dawn: To Akari_Dawn's surprise when they picked up this for translating a lot was already done by the original translators, they completed the script translation and uploaded to Gamefaqs in hope somebody will insert it back into the game. It's been 7 years since.

I like searching for cool hacks and translations of old games that were left in Japan. All translation and hacking credits go to their respective authors. I don't translate games :)
