What about games that let you play as a zombie or get zombie status like Metal Slug?
Skul: The Hero Slayer's developer is apparently a
Metal Slug fan because they put in a big ol' reference to exactly what you're talking about in the game.
One of the skulls (a.k.a. classes) you can play as is a rare one called 'Mummy'. It's starts off pretty weak: the only attacks you have are coughing up scarabs, spewing poison, or rolling an orb along the ground that explodes on contact. It's also quite slow but it has permanent immunity to traps which is awesome to have in certain stages.
The mummy really starts to shine when you upgrade the skull. At full power, the mummy is much faster and
ammo crates start raining down from the sky. Every pickup gives you a unique weapon (assault rifles, grenade launchers, laser guns, missiles, shotguns, etc) which you can use until the ammo runs out. At that point, his abilities allow you to have a steady stream of ammo spawn, so the game essentially turns into a shoot-'em-up.
