Most people don't know that my country, Macedonia (now North Macedonia), had an incredible arcade scene in the 80s/90s (we called them "Fliperi", Flippers!). It's a piece of gaming history that's almost completely undocumented, so I made this video detailing my own, personal experiences with Arcades in Macedonia during the Yugoslavia Era and after Macedonia left the union.
The video talks about Arcade Gaming culture in Macedonia, its quirks and specifics during the 80's and 90's.

I explain all this in the video but it's a 29 min video so for those who don't want to click the video or watch/listen to it and would rather read, let me give you guys a brief run down of how amazing our arcade scene was.

- In Macedonia and I assume in the rest of Yugoslaivia Arcades were called Flippers (Fliperi/Флипери), the name comes from Pinball Machines which were originally called Flippers here so the thing stuck for everything, both the Arcade itself and the Arcade games/cabinets.
Arcades were so big among kids and teens here in the 80’s and 90’s parents naturally assumed that if they didn’t know where their kids were, they’d most likely be at one of the local arcades.

- It appears Arcades were cheap to import in Yugoslavia and Macedonia and due to the low cost of Electricity cheap to maintain as a business.
Arcades In our part of the world were usually family owned businesses often named after the owners themselves, their kids or family members. Yet these places were absolutely filled with games from the early 80’s all the way to the newest and best titles at the time.

Fom what I was told by the admin of a popular Macedonian gaming facebook group, RETROTEKA, in the early 90’s Arcade owners would often import bootleg PCBs from Tailand but a good number of the cabinets were built locally by a company from the Macedonian city of Prilep called VIDEO DE-NI as well as some other company from the city of Gevgelia.
The guy gave me a few photos of an old beat up arcade cabinet from the early 90's or so built by this DE-NI company:

Apparently monitors and other hardware was sourced from the Netherlands.
He believes that branded, original cabinets would often be imported from Italy and pinball machines from France.

- This is what arcade coints looked like here in Macedonia and pretty much I assume all of Yugoslavia and later ex Yugoslavia.
My aunt found these two coins in one of her wallets, they're authentic Macedonian arcade coins from the early-mid 90's.
Coins here would be very cheap and easily affordable, but in vacation towns like Ohrid they'd increase the price drastically during the peak of the tourist season in mid July and August.
These are authentic coins from two of the most popular arcades back then in the city of Ohrid, Tabana and Bibi.

- When it comes to games we had just about everything here, if you can think of an arcade game we probably had it in an arcade somewhere.
BUT, we also had tons of Consoles turned Arcades on a timer. So for me, some of my favorite "Arcade" games as a kid were actually Sonic 3 and TMNT Hyperstone Heist for Mega Drive among other real arcade games.
I remember seeing the Genesis/MD Aladdin in several arcades as well the Battle Mania games.

These arcades worked similar to the Mega Drive Mega Tech arcade cabinets, they were on a timer but our timers were usually 5 minutes per coin or so.

So what happened to arcades in Macedonia? How did they get phased out?
Though present and popular throughout the 90’s and early 00’s, arcades were quickly being replaced by cheaper, better alternatives, Game and Internet cafes.
We had game cafes as early as the mid 90’s where you could pay for an hour and play an unlimited number of console games, NES, Mega Drive, SNES, Master System and in the late 90’s PS1 and by the late 90’s PC Gaming and Internet cafes became exceptionally popular as well. So why pay 3 or 5 denars a coin at an arcade and if you sucked at the game you’d die immediately and lose your money when you could be playing to your hearts content for a mere 60 denars for a whole hour and extend your play time if you wanted.

Hope you all enjoyed this topic :)

Again I do NOT profit from my channel, it's a 100% non profit thing

Pretty much the same as my country. Originally arcade places here was about pinball and those "toy catcher" machines, and then arcade machines relatively had short life span here (more like about 10 years) and afterwards they are replaced by internet cafes (originally for serious stuff to do on internet but evolved for public PC gaming places) and PlayStation cafes (it's like arcade machine places but you sit down on couch and play PlayStation as much as you paid that this "tradition" continued until PS4).

I liked pinball machines more than arcade machines, I was kinda stubborn on not playing arcade machines back then because it meant killing my beloved pinball machines by removing them. I also didn't like the idea of how scam arcade machines are because they are designed to kill you as soon as they can but then I liked Missile Command and beat 'em up games a lot. Yet the scam issue was a big reason for me to switch to Atari 2600 and other home consoles later on as the popularity of Sega Genesis killed arcade places here. Parents didn't like scam aspect of arcade places, they wanted to legalize a ban for them because of it, and then the Mortal Kombat "gore" issue was an atomic bomb on oil lol and then alongside with such stuff dug the early grave of arcade machines here that people fully transitioned for Sega Genesis.

I love Mortal Kombat a lot, and I remember back then the old guy who owned the arcade place I used to hang out one day said "kids, it may be the last time you'll enjoy MK", we asked "why uncle?", he said "damn bloody Americans wanna ban MK so we will recieve no support for these machines and they may ban them here too" and then we were like "dude we should hide these machines or something!!!" and it turned out the guy also had a bar (during the day he was boss of the arcade place and during the night he was the boss of this bar) so we helped the guy carry the MK machine to depot part of his bar to play the MK. But we were playing the game in so secret patrons were asking "dude what these kids doing here" and the boss was saying "ah they are working at the depot", and we were unplugging the machine when we see cops around lol (now I thinking about it there was no care for banning arcade machines here and cops wouldn't care lol) but we were literally playing safe lolol. And then the popularity of the Sega Genesis and all a sudden realization of "dude where all the arcade places disappeared to?" was the end of the arcade era here. FIN lol.

Naturally we having no knowledge on what actually happened, for a long time me and many people blamed Americans on banning arcade machines in the world just because of MK. But in our culture gore is not so "hell no" thing, it was what some parents wouldn't prefer their kids to play but if they still play such stuff it would be "ok" (History of my country is about the real deal gore for us so gore stuff is not something to be bothered but just to know it's how real life is). But what is "hell no no nope nada" thing is sexual stuff (because it's cringe and kinda disrespecting human race) so we believed the real reason of why MK machines wanted to be banned was a hidden sexy elements in the game like because of a super attack you can undress women or some hidden sex mode or some shit (which because of this mentality on Sega Genesis we figured out how to undress a woman character in Art of Fighting lolol). In my mind getting old and all I always believed Americans hate video games a lot, and then connected to internet and learned about they even released XBOX was like "wow moment" for me. And then I learned the irony of American games have tons of gore shit and they basically allow GTA to exist so I was like "what was the brain fart moment about Mortal Kombat then huh?". However still to this day America seems like a weird world from a magical reality that simple aspect of humanity and even laws of physics probably works differently there lolol.

every supermarket, ship, bar had at least 2-3 arcades.
I remember in a camping, the supermarket had those naughty arcades with nude ladies for kids to see. No complaints from parents

Though for barcades with pool, darts and pinball you had to be 16 and up to enter and it was a no go for kids, post evening hours, without a guardian at least

I found your story really interesting: even under the military regime back then, the gaming hype still seemed to work pretty well, from what I read in your account. Those two shots of the arcade tokens made me smile because they looked a lot like the ones we used in Italy at the time. And they were also very similar to payphone tokens!
I’ll check out your video with interest

I'm going to suppress my Bulgarian roots for this and say it's sick. I don't know much about what the arcade scene was here but my dad has told me there was an arcade in my town in the 80s (so, when he was between 8 and 17). I can only guess if anyone of those machienes are still working, or in town.

This was such a fun read, dude! wow
I didn't catch which country you were from for America to have such reach over arcades there, but the whole thing of you kids helping move the arcade and playing it in secret, that is so so so good, it's legit one of those gaming childhood memories we had back in the "normal" world that minecraft and fortnite just can't give kids these days.

Thanks for the post, really, I love reading stuff like this about gaming.

now I feel bad for not including footage of Mortal Kombat in my video, I'm not a fan of the series and I just kinda didn't think of having it in the video but it would have been such a nostalgic trip for you :)

That's the way the normal world worked and it was better for it, same here, in some arcades you could walk in, have one of those erotic games right there in the middle of the arcade and nobody cared. People weren't gooning over it or anything, sure some might play it, us boys would comment on the ladies/someone playing poorly or well, make a few jokes but nothing major.
I miss that world

We imported many arcades from Italy, the nonbootleg ones too so it wouldn't surprise me if the modls for the coins and coin doors came from there.
There were other coin designs too, some with more ridges and grooves, some with different placement of the ridges but they were all roughly in this style.

I'm actually waiting for a package from Italy now for one of my, personal, VFD holy grails, ZigZag Monster so hopefully it arrives safe and sound so I can finally finish shooting my next video on VFD games :)

I know that during the 90's and early 2000's piracy in both our countries was absolutely thriving, we had everything, so it wouldn't surprise me if you guys had a great arcade scene as well back in the 80's and early 90's.

Here in Macedonia they were in pretty much every neighborhood in my city.

Well I keep where I'm from a "secret" among many things about me and intentionally fill my internet history with false information so even if you had find something about me you can never trust what you learn about me because people tend to be racist about it and lifeless people dig my whole internet footprint to be racist about it further just to get weapons to attack me especially when they dislike my opinion or use it as ad hominem to win their pointless argument for ego masturbation because it is the only "victory" they can ever taste in their lifeless life lol.

People can go boom racist and they will ban me from here as how it was in many places just because "people are bothered by you yo" and moderators always ban the people who people are bothered by their existence instead of racist people. There were already people bitching about my opinions here and grammar nazis who suck at writing yet they attack me messages too because of it lol. The more people learn about you the less they can see how you really are therefore I make them confused so they can think twice what I'm to avoid being simply labelled as "oh you are a man so you playing Resident Evil 3 means you are pervert AF" shit mentality. That's the internet for ya!!! lol

Let's just say I'm a bear escaped from a secret lab in Russia after my brain was bio-engineered enough for me to be so smartz to escape and leave it with that!!! I always lie and it was a lie too!!!! ::winkfelix

I can KIND of understand tho nobody would ban you from RTG trust me, the mods here are very good kind people.

I used to hide I was from Macedonia from LUE on GameFAQs 2001-2004 and LUElinks 2004-2006 because one time a guy on mIRC made fun of me for it on the LUE(GameFAQs LUE) channel and I foolishly got embarrassed for it and decided to pretend I was American for years.
I'd even set my PC's clock to EST so when I take screenshots they don't suspect anything because a person commented on this once. I was dumb, I later admitted I was from Macedonia, nobody cared fortunately BUUUT then people decided I was lying about it for a gimmick and as an excuse for being ...different... so 2006-2011 it was a whole ordeal on both GameFAQs and LUElinks where people kept trying to prove and insisted I was a guy from the US pretending to be Macedonian so I can get away with not abiding by US life values and living standards :)

I use random usernames that looks random but used by someone else in a random forum anymore and make sure to use different usernames everywhere + assume subtle sign of roleplaying as someone else by finding a random guy on internet so if anyone wanna find me they will bother a random person lol because sometimes forums doxx your IP and/or where you are connected from. A forum I used long time ago for example started to publish where everyone connected from on profile summary that you see when you send posts and I wasn't aware of it until on another forum a racist kid who digged my internet history because he is lifeless lol by searching my username back then that I only used in that forum and the forum doxxed my country. Naturally his racist BS made his dogs join too and moderators banned me for good instead because it's simple math. Instead of banning half of the forum they will ban you. And this shit happened on many websites. Make people angry and they will spam report about you and moderators will use any excuse to ban you because they won't wanna read about people report you.

Didn't happen to me but once a moderator doxxed an users' IP and some social media stuff. Shit happens.

As for this website, despite there is no such rules they deleted my message for "it's not funny" which is why I was banned for like 1 month from using significant part of this forum (I guess my joke was too dark despite it wasn't about anyone lol, then they should say "dark humor is banned too" right? lol) and despite my message wasn't a joke just because I used r-word to say what kind of movie Michael Bay may release as Outrun adaptation because it was the thread about my message is removed with the message "it's not funny". Dude am I in comedy club or Retro Game Talk lol? And their rule 4 was hard to get used to because they don't want anything political when I said for possible rule 4 reasons using USBs to preserve games would be a better choice and then rule 4 aspects of why video game industry is affected without even naming anyone or country. Now I'm even scared from talking about Radiata Stories lol. There are hidden banned words here that they didn't bother add into rules here yo. This forum is not all flowers, sun and daisy as it looks like yo. I may say one thing and it may anger 5 people and they will ban me because of it. After all my existence is not something anyone would care. Being banned ok but when moderator come to the other place I'm and bitch about me to ban me is a headache, and then people being so lifeless to ruin someone IRL (once they found a random guy but they believe it was me so they ruined his life lol). I feel like a manace by just breathing and they feel like a hero trying to "slay me" lol.

Long story short use VPN, act like a special agent, use some random guy as decoy because beyond racism people are so mindless enough to wanna hunt you down on social media too anymore. And no offense to anyone here but I trust no one and if anyone wanna cross me I'll bring my atomic bombs!!! lol

Excellent post. I've always been curious about life in communist countries during the Cold War, and I see that it wasn't all about party loyalty, gulags, or parades.

Yugoslavia was pretty chill actually, we had foreign TV, movies, satelitte TV, foreign toys and action figures.
I grew up on UK shows like DJ Kat, Game's World and all the american cartoons that aired on UK TV in the 80's and 90's and I had all the toys too, we were never behind on entertainment here.
