it's a strange feeling, isn't it? we all have these genres we think are interesting in concept, that seem deep and engaging, a genre we'd like very much to get into, but when we try to play ourselves it just falls flat for some reason, and it doesn't hold our attention enough .

For me it's 4X stuff. The depth, replayability and board game like feel seem like the perfect way to get engrossed and make those brain juices flow... but rarely if ever I manage to finish a session. Part of my brain goes "are you really going to stick with this for a week when you could be playing Monster Hunter or whatever else?" then I just leave it.

So, what about everyone else?

Lovely topic idea. I personally would love to just blast through my visual novel backlog one day.

My taste for VNs changed greatly over time. At one point in my life I felt terribly lonely so I was basically chasing companionship through them. These days I want to play those that have a big mysteries behind them.

RTSsssSSSssssorry that key was stuck, real time strategy is hard and hurts me and I want to be good at it so fucking much.
I feel your pain. Broodwar is king, but I can't even beat AIs.

Felt that way when I was 19. I was also ironically somewhat impatient back then.

Stuff like Puzzle Agent.

I love the idea, I just suck at it.
Then I’m happy to inform you that game is extremely newcomer friendly

Tactical RPGs. I always hear about how amazing FFT story is or how amazing Jagged Alliance 2 is and whatnot, but these tactical rpgs are so slow and tedious for me, I already hate when turn-based rpgs like BG3 do these large battles, an entire game like this? Also I dislike the general lack of exploration and adventuring compared to usual RPGs. I like to sometimes just walk around, look at the trees in the forest, feel that nice BGM. Long games need variety to keep me interested in general.

I would also love to add that I really need to get over my inability to finish J-ARPGs like star ocean or tales. I’m always intimidated by them.

2D fighting games.
I can nail a mean combo in training mode with the best of 'em! But throw me into an actual match with a real person and I become a jittery, button-mashing embarassment.

It's such a shame - I think the stuff skilled players can pull off in those games is the absolute sickest shit, but I'm just not cut out for it for whatever reason.

The Dark/Demon Souls series. Elden Ring and all.
Most Open World games.
Honestly yeah same I never felt fun while playing dark souls , the only time it was fun for me was playing it online with my brother but heck any game could be fun online, I felt like it relied on being "difficult" way too much without having much substance to it

I'm playing tales of the abyss right now and it isn't really hard
