Are you the type that only considers a game complete when you earn all achievements/trophies/whatchamacallits?

I always felt somewhat offended by this notion - I see as something rather Pavlovian, as if the developers dangle a virtual carrot in front of the player to maintain engagement past what the game could truly provide based on its own merits, on average.

As such, any achievements I do get are just a side effect of organic play, rather than a conscious effort.

So, let's hear it, how does everyone else feel?

If it’s a short game, like Sonic 1 or something, then yes, I do like to complete everything. I don’t consider a play through of Super Mario Bros. 1 complete if the player uses warp zones, because they’re skipping gameplay.

For longer and modern games, though, I only do everything if I really, really like the game. (Though, again, I do want to finish as much of the gameplay as possible.) I’d never collect all the seeds in BOTW, for example, but I 100%’d Rayman Legends easy because it was just so goshdarned fun.

I sorta hate how much I see myself in this comment, because the idea that arbitrary achievements by the developers amount to a "complete" experience just...

..like I'm suppressing a rant thinking about it.

Mentioning sonic within My radius will trigger my secret power: super autism ::redhot
::apollo ok so I know this is extremely off topic but I gotta mention something about sonic 1
I think sonic 1 is pretty fun in a no-save run
That’s all

BOTW was my shock therapy form it in Sandbox, but i still do it in smaller games

P-S To all the Kologs That i will never bother finding:
(╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻

I respect those that do it. It's more bang for your buck after all. Sadly, as I'm getting older I'm getting way more difficult to please. It feels like a miracle to get past the first few hours of a new game, let alone beat it. Being a completionist is completely off the table for me lol.

I always try to get all the trophies in a game (specially if the game wasn't cheap to obtain 😬) . I see doing that as a form to see more content or experience new ways to replay a game (for example the achivements on survival horrors games that make use a certain weapon). Altough the thing I hate the most are online trophies in single player games 🤢 (I am looking at you Rockstar and Naughty dog)

See that's one of the things that bother me about achievement hunting: the player ends up falling in the pit of the sunk cost problem for no fault of their own. It's like paying for a meal and feeling you have to eat it all even when you are already satisfied, even under the risk of having an indigestion.

It really depends. If it's a REALLY long game? I'll only do it if I really like it or don't have a lot of stuff in my backlog but if it's a really short game? Then yeah, I'll 100% it.

I have a lot of games in my backlog, so it's a big hassle. However, I have no problem with completionism. I think it's great, if you really like a game? You wanna play it more, but if you don't have the time for it? That's understandable too.

I have this habit of switching games, even if I'm not even halfway through the game I'm currently playing

I really, really wanted to finish the game (at least the main game), but unfortunately I rarely do it

It's like every game I've played will eventually have this wall where I won't have any progress for at least a few days. What's worse is that even with all the guides, I can't just seem to go past that one level (despite showing how easy some of it is)

That's why in the end, I just changed the game…again (the loop won't stop)

i kinda used to be a completionist when i was a kid, like i'd literally scour through the whole ratchet and clank going commando just to find every last bit of nanotech to get max hp, but nowadays i just feel like it's a chore, like recently i've been playing battle for bikini bottom but it's too frustrating to play that i don't even wanna bother going back to the earlier areas to find whatever i'm missing 😂 call it a skill issue, prolly is, but i guess i had way more patience as a kid (since i literally grinded in ff5 nonstop in this undersea place where you can park your submarine, rest, and fight monsters literally outside your submarine, and this was on ps1 💀)

I understand you completely. I feel certain kinds of achievements/goals don't do a good job at respecting the player's time, and as kids we don't have that kind of notion.

If there's no reward for it other than just saying "I DID IT!" then this:

To those who do it good for them to each their own.

As a casual gamer with a short attention/fascination span, I rarely ever finish a game until the designated "end". Each time I play my old save, I just felt lost, and start all over again, which lead to me losing interest and repeating the cycle over and over again.

I personally see "completionist" as a niche, but admirable nerds. People that spent all those time scouring every inch of the game, understanding their mechanics from top to bottom, and exploring the "birth child" of multiple people's working together to create something wonderful enough, that people would waste their limited lifespan on it.

Me? Nah, I could barely finish a game! I'll let other people dig those sandpits for their well earned treasures.

And I kinda get your point. Having the achievement "One-Million-Milestones" on an RPG game that has their characters doing 10k damage with their gear/skill/stats maxed out feel impossible/redundant.

For me? I just ignore those things, because those sorts of achievements just fly over my head like clouds. I'm never gonna touch those things, so I just don't bother.

It's really a mixed bag, sometimes I go in gunning for all achievements but other times I'm more than happy to just finish all the content in a game and be on my merry way. Really gonna depend on how much I like the game, and how much of a pain the achievements are to get. Platinumed Tales of arise and Ender lilies recently and both of those were pretty much smooth sailing. But something that requires 2 or more playthroughs is usually a deal breaker for me (Part of the reason I haven't done the achievements in persona).

Persona is a huge time sink, for better or worse.
Yea it really is, makes for a fantastic first experience but man is it a slog on a repeat playthrough especially the beginning sections before the gameplay loop is in full effect.
