What are some games that you would give the absolute highest score to? Here are some my choices:

Mark of the Ninja
Viva Pinata
Valiant Hearts the Great War
Star Fox
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Portal
The Sexy Brutale
Tearaway
Valkyria Chronicles
Skies of Arcadia Legends
Mass Effect 1 & 2
Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic
The Red Star
Space Channel 5
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night - A lot of Castlevania games could qualify honestly, but I really love this one.
Odinsphere Leifthrasir
Guacamelee Super Turbo Championship Edition
Resident Evil 4 - The original one. I haven't played the remake.
Dino Crisis
Ratchet & Clank Up Your Arsenal
Ratchet & Clank Tools of Destruction
Final Fantasy VI
Final Fantasy 7
Astro Bot: Rescue Mission
Chrono Trigger
Grandia - Saturn version
Until Dawn
13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim
Sly Cooper 3
Ico
The Ninja Warriors - Console version, not the original arcade version (never played that one)
Sonic 3 and Knuckles
Rockman X 4 (I'm specifying the Japanese version because it doesn't have the awful English dub LOL)
Super Mario Bros. Wonder

There are others, but I don't want to make too long a list (though I think I already did LOL). Let's see your choices

I don't think 10/10 has to mean that the game is literally perfect and without flaws, because if a full score is literally unattainable then there's no reason to have such a rating system at all.

Ys Seven
Front Mission 3
Final Fantasy type-0
Legacy of Kain Blood Omen
Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver
Steambot Chronicles
SRW Endless Frontier/Exceed
Luminous Arc1-3
Avalon Code
Devil May Cry 3
Metal Gear Solid 1-4 and Peace Walker
Zone of the Enders

this game isnt a 9 or a 10, the enemies and the combat is abysmal. I like it, but there is no way this game is great after 1 playthrough.

I think the opposite. The rating means what nothing is going to reach, in order to rate everything else under it. We have the constant eagery of giving something the maximum score possible to state there is no better, but that can't be obtainable because time is eternal, and at some point rates go down and we need to scale even higher, leaving what was the best under to what is now the best.

Think of it as a MMO gacha game, at some point you have the best gacha but as you can't stop time eventually the best gacha will be surpassed by another gacha in a neverending scale, in order to continue getting your money, otherwise you would stop spending it. If a perfect game would exist, you couldn't play anything else because all the rest wouldn't matter.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Trials and Tribulations
Final Fantasy VI
Chrono Trigger
Phantasy Star III: Generations of Doom (my first RPG  )
Day of the Tentacle

Edit : Personally, I don't know what perfection is. But I think a rating system needs a yardstick to work (10 = full satisfaction ; 0 = full disappointment).

But it's not like I'm measuring every game I've ever played against each other. I'm measuring how much I enjoy them, and applying a fun arbitrary number is a nice way to sort of cross-reference yourself and your enjoyment of a hobby. I don't think any scoring system should have scores that are impossible to reach because to me that'd just make the whole system redundant.
It's fine, though. Everything from scores to rating systems for stuff like this is giga subjective so everyone's gonna have different approaches to it.

To each their own, as they say.::peacemario

For some reason, almost all of my favorite games are "more than the sum of their parts" kinda deals, and most of them I've only played once or twice.

In my opinion, if I have to literally nitpick to find fault with something then it's a 10 in my book. I do believe that 10s and five star ratings exist for a reason. They are meant to represent the absolute highest level of quality and absolutely can be attained when creators put enough blood, sweat, tears, TLC, and inspiration into a project. Electronic Gaming Monthly has given out 10s during their publication history and people in the pro wrestling industry have given out five star ratings to especially fantastic matches.

I think saying nothing can be perfect or a ten is a cynical view. That's just my opinion though, if it makes you guys feel better just think of this as your "greatest games of all time".

just think of this as your "greatest games of all time".
Yeah that's more or less how I view it too. It's not like I'm trying to convince my friends to follow my personal criterias, it's just an easy understandable shorthand for "I really really really love this". At least for me, that is.

Personally I've never been a fan of numerical scoring. I find that the moment you start questioning the ins and outs of that metric, it always falls apart.

That said, I do have a small subjective list of games I consider functionally ageless and that achieve what I perceive their design goals to be either perfectly or as close to perfectly as reasonably possible.

Here's a couple I can remember off the top of my head:

Tetris (I mean come on, if ever a game was perfect, it's Tetris)
Super Metroid
Castlevania - Symphony of the Night
Resident Evil 4 (Original)
Resident Evil (REmake)
Sekiro
Elden Ring (I have a lot of issues with this game, but man it is a sight to behold)
Thief Gold / Thief 2
Mega Man Zero 3
Final Fantasy Tactics - War of the Lions (w/ slowdown removal! Possibly controversial, but I love this version)
Advance Wars 2
Street Fighter 3 - Third Strike
Slay the Spire
Chrono Trigger
Mega Man X
Ninja Gaiden Black

These are not necessarily my favourite games ever - at least not all of them - just ones I have a really hard time finding any flaws with.

Surprisingly... The first (and so far ONLY) game I have ever seen granted a perfect score was the original Deus Ex -- they had given it a 10, called it a "masterpiece", and even encouraged readers to contact Eidos and Ion Storm to campaign for it to get a Spanish translation. That definitely caught my eye in 2000.

And this was a site that frequently encouraged people NOT to buy games because their judging standards were too harsh and unreal.

I kinda hate the word "perfect" in general.

So, here's an old thing I made about some games I like very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very... A lot!

I made them one per franchise at the time to give exposure to more games I liked that other people might not have heard of.
I might have to re-do these at some point. In hindsight, I'm not as keen on MK 11 as I used to be ::sailor-embarrassed

I've always kind of agreed with the notion people in here are talking about with regards to there being no such thing as a perfect game (Or perfect anything in general), but without getting into semantics and another debate, I guess for me I'd say:

Sin and Punishment
Bloodborne
Kingdom Hearts 2 Final Mix
Vanquish
Pikmin 2
Resident Evil 4 (Original version)
Street Fighter 3 3rd Strike
Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus R

These are all games that I feel I could honestly play over and over and rarely get bored. As I get older as well, I find myself more often going back to games I already love but finding new ways to play them, and I find all these games give me adequate ways to play them differently every time and allow me to give myself different challenges each time (I'll be honest the last 2 are just there because they're my favorite fighting games, but I guess what I said could apply to them as well).

I really need to update my lists! I hadn't played any Pikmin back when I made them...

I love the Pikmin games (Except 4. Really was not a fan of 4). Was really weird seeing them go from these 2 niche Gamecube games to then being forgotten for like a decade and now it's one of Nintendo's more well known IP's. What a journey lol.

Updated my 2nd list.

Changelog:
Replaced;
Astro's Playroom with Astro Bot, Dark Souls 3 with Elden Ring, Oblivion with GOTY edition, MK 11 with Pikmin 4, MLP Maretime Bay Adventure with MLP Zephyr Heights Mystery & used different art work for Them's Fightin' Herds & TMNT Shredder's Revenge.

If anyone is interested in what I use to make those lists: topsters.org

I like Pikmin 4 the most, but that's probably more because it is a lot more casual and more forgiving of my poor Pikmin playing skill ::sailor-embarrassed

I tend to favor mechanically nuanced action games, so my personal 10/10's would be stuff like Ninja Gaiden Black, Devil May Cry 3/5, Bayonetta 1 etc.
Put the original Resident Evil 4, Street Fighter 3 Third Strike, and Garou Mark of the Wolves on there too. I love Fire Emblem too, with a particular soft spot for Awakening.

None of these games are truly perfect, but they're perfect to me.
