Streets of Rage 2 for Genesis was the first I remember but also had Double Dragon on NES. Also remember the first time I seen Final Fight arcade machine.

And of course the NES TMNT games

my first beat em up was streets of rage 2 for the megadrive, my dad had a compilation cart with shinobi, golden axe and streets of rage

Golden Axe 2 on the mega drive. I am a fan of the genre ever since.

Really funny to see a lot of "TMNT" as people's first beat em up because I was trying so hard to remember what the hell was MY first beat em up and sure enough it was TMNT (2003) for the Gameboy Advance. I would probably slot in Power Rangers Wild Force (GBA) at the same exact time because I remember owning both at the same time so. Those two would be my first experiences with beat em up brawler type games.

Power Rangers Wild Force was really really interesting looking back on it. Top down almost diablo-like isometric beat em up gameplay with high replayability because you'd wanna go back and do different routes to collect certain animal orbs to have combinations to make certain animal Zords for the final big kaiju mecha battle boss fights. So so so cool. I remember the gorilla one being one of my favorites.
