It’s a combo of box art, box style, and physical inserts if there are any!

A truly magical one, Magic Knight Rayearth’s NA release by working design came in a gorgeous example of the “long box” format, with a huge canvas for the amazing art, done up with foil detail, and three disc variants to find. The game is the final Saturn game released in the North American market, and it’s an absolutely perfect one to go out on.

Shoe your favorite physical packages you’ve seen for games!

My almost-first videogame: FF8 for pc, in the boxed version, with four discs (on every disc a character from the game), a plastic box with covers for the discs, a big manual, and of course the external paper box.

But I would include in my post most of the games I owned for ps2 and psp and ds, because they had full manuals, often colourful ones, so the physical game felt more "complete" than, for example, a tiny Switch card inside a empty case with a white background.

i like the old sega genesis cases

we had mnr. Prolly bought all of the saturn and psx wd releases back then. Wonderful packaging.

i remember going to the mall every tuesday to see when the new postponed wd release date would be for lunar or whatever. :D

too bad i have no idea where any of that stuff is now... oh well

just started a new game of mnr on mister the other night. Its funny how i remember the hunt for these games more vividly than the actual games

The duo of “looks like childhood”.

If you find either of these in perfect shape, that’s awesome, but I swear they somehow look BETTER with a little wear and tear.

I was a big fan of Borderlands 2, so I preordered the 3rd one the day it was announced. Pretty fun game, but I was the most chuffed about how sick the steelbook art it came with was. It was a raised pattern too, so very satisfying to slide your fingers over to feel all the indents.

For me, it would be the original Final Fantasy.
With all the maps and charts, as well as the included partial guide in the instruction manual, it felt like a huge, epic RPG in it's time, all the extra information to look up made it feel like an even bigger deal than Dungeons & Dragons at the time and really added a lot to the experience of owning the game itself; it was a really big deal back then to get so much extra with a Nintendo game, there were a few games that came with things like this (looking at you, StarTropics) but not many.

I see what you mean!

I have become obsessed with how amazing this game is aesthetically.

I mean this as a compliment when I say: I feel like I’m being sold a bunch of candy rather than a video game.

I've always thought the Ecco II / Tides of Time Japanese box was gorgeous. I don't even have a Japanese Mega Drive to play it, but I picked up a copy for cheap because I liked it so much.

i really enjoy the ps1 tall cases. i have one for gex, but im too lazy to dig for it rn. i guess these were expensive and bulky so they switched to the jewel cases.
