  These aren't strictly my favourite games on the platform, but they're ones I love and they give enough variety that I wouldn't get too annoyed on missing out.

Yes Peace Walker is definitely the better game, the topic originated between a discussion between me and a friend over what 5 games we would have to buy if we got a PSP and we both rather one of the newer HD Port of Peacewalker over the original PSP version.

How playable are the PSP Macross games for someone who doesn't know Japanese?

I added the translation of 7th Dragon to my rom collection like a year ago and never got around to it, now I'm curious seeing it's in the 5 games for the psp that you would want to have if I'm missing out on something grand.

Perfectly playable, especially Ace and Ultimate Frontier, they have the menus and such laregly in english and I'd suggest going with just ultimate frontier if you're only going to play one of them and understand most of the menus.

Ultimate is just ace but with way more content, triangle frontier just has a few additions but the menus are in Japanese, it also has an adventure text based mode in it. Unless you absolutely must play through the second frontier movie and macross 2 lovers again, Ultimate frontier has everything and is amazing.

I'd suggest delta also as having the most refined gameplay of all macross games but that is on the vita

1- Syphon Filter Dark Mirror- best Third person shooter I have played
2- Tekken 5 Dark Resurrection - even if you suck at fighters like me it is a perfect port with tons of content
3- Daxter- Great platformer
4- Peacewalker console quality on the go
5-God of War chains of Olympus- same as before

I need to play more psp games like I never played ghosts of sparda

1 - Beaterator - i've probably made over 200+ songs on this "game", and to this day is the only DAW i know how to use (apart from a little renoise). every time i boot up my psp, i instantly go looking for beaterator first

2 - THUG2 Remix - you cannot go wrong with this one. the best thps game (maybe after thaw) ported almost one to one on the psp. heaps of fun

3 - Burnout Legends - car goes crash - me happy

4 - Midnight Club LA - personal reasons - almost drove into a ditch because i was showing my friends my tuned Golf mk1. don't psp&drive, kids.

5 - Chinatown Wars - the 3D GTA games left a very bad taste in my mouth for some reason, but CW feels like a dream to play. also uh... lottery tickets ;)

I don't care much for GTA but either Vice City Stories or Liberty City Stories probably deserves a spot more than something like Lumines if I were trying to craft a "5 must-have starter games" for the system. Tried to make sure the list is varied in terms of genre. Monster Hunter may have some overlap with God of War as 3D action games but they obviously are super different in gameplay, structure and appeal. It is always tough to narrow a system down to just 5 essentials because the PSP has so many amazing games in a variety of genres so no matter what 5 you pick there will be blindspots.
