You speak English well, tell us about your experience.

I started using english for google searches, chatgpt questions, language settings in pretty much every app I use, etc.

I never took a proper english lesson outside of school, and most of what we did there was just translating the same words over and over again. What I did instead was search for patterns in phrases, texts, messages, you name it, and tried to relate them to how I'd say those same sentences in portuguese.

Of course, since I don't have the theoretical knowledge my grammar isn't perfect and words are easily mixed up, but I'd say I'm satisfied with what I have.

How I expect to sound when I speak English

I assume since I rarely have a vocal conversation in English that my English is flavored with a heavy German accent but I can read and write it good enough.

Also English taught in School sucks I had to teach most of it myself but I well mostly learned it naturally via Video Games and Media like Youtube as I watched many videos in English.

Sadly in IRL I only got very few opportunities to speak it as I am a Introvert and rarely go outside and when I do I don't hear English I hear pretty much every language under sun where I life.

Yet there is no English well besides that atrocious Denglish a mix between German and English or another way to describe it German with heavy English anglicism, where we replace words we already have with English once to sound less German and more ''Modern'' it annoys the living shit out of me and every year another German word gets killed off and gets replaced with a English one and that word for word until we speak completely English....::angrygenjinit does feel like erasure.

Every time someone says Sorry in Germany to me I could scream at them its Verzeihung or Es tut mir leid but no they have to use the English word for it just not to say the German word for it.
The same in written form where I read Sauce Instead of Soße or Classic instead of Klassik its so forced and Illogical it just feels like a extreme form of self hatred where they try to exterminate there own language over some fucking guilt complex.

well that was a little rant of mine.

I have no idea how i learned english to be honest. I used to struggle in school, but i guess playing game in english kinda taught me it to the point i can communicate in english with others, tho my skill in vocal conversation is still left to be desired, probably due to the lack of english speaking partners here. So yeah, english kinda found it's way into my brain xd::sailor-embarrassed

As many others said, i learned english by playing games. The english i was taught at school helped me only a little bit and by the time i was 15, i could read and understand english flawlessly (but barely managed to pass english class).

Many years have passed and almost everything i read or see online is english. I did an online test some months ago and the results said i had B2/C1 level. Not sure if i can trust that test because sometimes i write stuff like i would say them in my native language, and native english speakers obviously don't speak in the same manner as south americans.

Imagine my shock when my classmates in college were impressed at my english skills and i realized that not everyone around me knows english. I thought that everyone in my country knew how to speak english, at least at a base level. Guess i was wrong.

I'm really happy to see people are really out here learning languages through games. That's what I've been doing a lot of recently and it's been working for me. In the last half a year my Spanish vocabulary probably nearly tripled.

I'm still learning the language at an institute in my country, but I recognize using movies, series, books, music and video games for due this.
I'm very good at reading and listening, in speaking I'm fine but i need more practice, and the writing is my weakness.

i was born and taught english, but my school couldn't teach me how to read by second grade despite being apart of a reading activity group, so my mom downloaded anime and foreign movies with subtitles to help me and i was able to read english pretty quick afterward.
