I even booked an hotel for a week 1 street away from Kabukicho and never cared about Yakuza. The district is too small to have any impact in a japanese regular person, I've walked through it and just 7-8 bars, 10-12 nigerian guys saying stuff in english and 4 crazy people wearing crazy clothes and makeup. The only interesting thing was finding a tabehodai restaurant (all you can eat) for 1000¥ full of pork meat, vegetables, rice and water / tea. It was a yakiniku, so we had fun for 100 minutes :D. The rest of the district...not that important at all. And also not dangerous, if anyone told you the opposite is lieing deliberately.
