Yakuza/Like a Dragon Megathread

Daigo has absolutely nothing on this random npcView attachment 56257
It’s been since April. How has nobody responded to the Fart NPC?

Why did he go outside today wearing that? How bad is your life going that you HAVE to go outside in the Fart hoodie?

i just finished Yakuza! Credits song was amazing grace which i thought was kinda weird. combat was pretty serviceable. plot was interesting. game has a trust system with haruka that i didn't discover until near the end of the game. its a really cool game though. i give it an arbitrary numerical value of 8/10.

OG English dub, Undub or Kiwami remake?

it was undub. i did actually play the kiwami version before but i didn't like how they balanced the game after bringing the style switching over from 0. i never finished that version.

i'm thinking of going into yakuza 2 as my next game.

That's fair. I've only ever played the PS2 version with its wild English dub, but never in the original Japanese. I have played Kiwami a couple of times though.

Nice! hope you enjoy the franchise! and if not, then that's fine too!

OG Yakuza 1 is a nice game. the vibe of the original PS2 titles are phenomenal. the combat is also good for the first game of the series but OG Y2 combat is way more better.

although some people are uncomfortable with Kiwami 1 combat, for me it was a better and more advanced version of 0's combat. while 0 combat was really great, the legend style was underwhelming; but the Kiwami 1 made a improvement to both Dragon style and style switching

update: i started yakuza 2. already stumbled on the baby play yakuza sidequest. i'm enjoying that they upped the number of options for heat moves. a few of them make me think you should just straight up be dead if they happened to you.

Can't remember if they were in Yakuza 2, but there are a few heat actions I can remember involving guard railings that are still hard to watch!

one of my favorites is when you drop the guy butt first on the top end of the bench back rest. booty blasted.
Yeah, that one and one where you suplex them on a guard rail. Ouch! ::nervous-prinny

I honestly thought Kiwami was a 1:1 with just updated graphics.
Now that I know that I have to try the OG...

Kiwami 1 & 2 are pretty much full on remakes. The original Yakuza 1 on PS2 is especially different if you decide to check out the English dub.

i beat yakuza 2. gotta say that the ending has me going, more ways then one. in the final fight with ryuji like 90% of your attack moves aren't useful. heavy attacks have so much recovery and he tanks all of them. got me really fucking mad until i found a working strategy. grab his back, and only do light or heavy grab moves. throws are as far as im aware impossible to do on him. if he keeps breaking your grip, just do some lite 1-2 punches and dodge until your grab moves work again.

this is unless you have weapons. which i didn't use much because i already used them up in the fights before.

as for the ending it got me pretty teary eyed. 100% would recommend this game.

also sega hurry up and put yakuza 3 on sale on steam. i am a stingy bastard and don't want to pay 20 USD when i know you will put it on sale, eventually.

Somewhere recently they actually did another run of the ps2 games on physical discs. I picked them up because I'm a big fan of the series but never got to play the originals. I haven't had a chance to sit down and play them yet though. I'm really curious to find out how the gameplay differs (and suffer the english dub hahaha)

I think Ryuji Goda is still probably my favourite Yakuza antagonist. I love the series. I love almost every protagonist, but I have a little trouble remembering most antagonists after 2. Probably because there's two decades worth of games to remember ::sailor-embarrassed
I am so keen to hear what you think of 3 when you get around to it!

Cool, pinned.
Funny thing is that I did consider making this but I was watching the rgg summit with some buds, and reading fate stay night (multi task wooo)
4 is my favorite too, and 3 as well. They’re the most soulful. Yakuza 5 and 7 are also great and I’ve warmed up a bit to Yakuza 8 despite its faults.
Both ps2 Yakuzas are banger. The kuryhou games as well.
I also wanna play dead souls and Kenzan, they seem fun.
I’d recommend binary domain. Good story.

Based on recent convos, I did think you might beat me to the punch if anyone was going to hehe

Dead Souls is fun, but very different and weird in its own way. I'm not sure about Kenzan getting an English release, but who knows?

Still gotta check out Binary Domain. I have it, just haven't gotten around to it ::sailor-embarrassed

I've wanted to jump into this series for a long time, but there are so many games and it seems like they are all a big time sink.
Yes, and no. The main stories themselves aren't terribly long. Although, I guess that depends on your perception of "long" hehe They can be 100+ hours if you go for completion, but 20-30 hours if you focus on story and maybe do a bit of side stuff
