New to this forum excited to meet some like minded gamers! Hopefully I’m posting this in the correct section. Came across my old non working fat 360, took the case off like 5 years ago just left it in a box. Yesterday I remembered why I just left it . RRD. I attempted to clean it , reflow the solder and apply new thermal paste . Didn’t do a damn thing . And now my disk drive doesn't seem to work now either ,(it was janky before I started it would sometimes open sometimes not so this might be a secondary issue that I’m not worried about right now) I’m wondering if I didn’t heat the board enough ? Or too much ? Not enough paste or too much ? Is this not going to solve the RRD problem even if I did it right ? Then there is the whole secondary code business that is suspect at best. I know there are a million videos online about this topic . That’s the problem there are too many with too many conflicting ideas. I need someone that can potential help me diagnose the issue not just post YouTube videos for me to watch. Any and all help is greatly appreciated . Thanks

Welcome, dear test subject to RGT.

I had a similar problem with my optical drive in my Xbox 360. It seemed the SATA cable had come slightly loose. Re-check the connection on both the drive and the motherboard. It may simply not be seated fully.

As for the RRoD, that could be due to multiple issues. You mentioned it was a fat model. Depending on the model, they can get notoriously hot, and the CPU can desolder slightly from the board. It could also be a cold solder joint, a bad trace, or possibly a dead CPU. Honestly, there isn't really any way to diagnose your issue here without guessing.

However, since Xbox 360s are fairly cheap, you could consider buying another one from eBay, a pawnshop, or a yard sale, almost for nothing.

There's a lot of things that could go wrong with these early 360s and PS3s.
Main ones seem to be broken connections from unleaded solder balls used on the processors and failing capacitors that no longer output the right power to the processors.

Repairs are expensive, and are usually reserved for rare consoles or backwards compatible PS3s.

Or any console that you have a strong attachment to. :)

I have no attachment to the console . I was just seeing if I could get it back working so it wasn’t sitting in a box . I have a working 360 that I barely use lol. I was going to look in to modding it. Soft if possible . Don’t even know if it can be done or if it’s worth it .
