Would you recommend Star Ocean on SNES or Star Ocean Remake ? (First Departure R?)

Being honest here. I never completed the first Star Ocean game. I completed Star Ocean 2, Star Ocean 4, Star Ocean 6.
Played Star Ocean 3, but only made it to disc 2, but never completed it.
Seen that the differences between Star Ocean SNES and Remake are quite different. What would you recommend and why?

I've barely played the OG SNES version, but I enjoyed the PSP remake, Star Ocean: First Departure, very much. So I guess First Departure R should be great ::cirnoshrug

EDIT: Since you mentioned that you completed SO2, maybe the PSX version, I'll add that First Departure is, in general style, made to be like SO2, mostly.

Thanks for mentioning that. I completed Star Ocean 2 PSX and the Remake as well. I only played the beginning of Star Ocean 1 Remake, but never played far.

If you want the true nostalgic feel, try the SNES one, if you crave the original experience with lots of modern mechanics, go for R

My personal opinion playing the snes version of star ocean and star ocean 2 is a nice thing if your a fan. But if it´s your first time I would go for the First departure and the second story r that you can get on PS4/PS5 and steam.

Sadly for some dumb reasons Star ocean first departure is not on stem but then again star ocean till the end of time is not there as well.

Kind of dumb you have the second game and the 4th and 5th game on steam but not 1 and 3 ?

But will square enix is kind of stupid allot of times.

I've only played the snes original and I enjoyed it. I know it's not the same game but personally I prefer the snes version of Tales of Phantasia over the remakes and as far as I know they were worked on by some of the same devs.

First Departure R for a smoother gameplay experience. I think if you want to give the OG SNES a try you might be better off doing a complete nostalgia run starting from release date to the remakes/remasters to get the full effect of evolution of scale in story and gameplay but if you just want to experience the story I say play R. Just depends what available to you and what your time table looks like. Don't get hung up on things like purity of the game just save yourself the hard trouble of extra grind, poorer translation norms and hardware limitations as long as the spirit of the game is preserved you should be able to play a new edition no with problem.

I haven't played the Switch versions, but I honestly love the PSP ones for being such a step up in quality and still remaining in parity with each other. I dislike 2DHD with a passion, so make of that what you will.

I played only the SNES one fan-translated many years ago. Dont remember anything. :P - But the PSP remake for what i saw has WAY BETTER graphics so if you care about this it might be your thing. If you care about history then the SNES is the one to go. A new patch was being developed that changed the UGLY FONT of the previous fan-translation. No news of it yet, it can found on romhacking.net

Play the remake. The original version is honestly still pretty good but I feel the remake does a better job it, also it's a lot easier to pick up the remake.

GO FOR IT PLAY IT PLAY IT PLAY IT PLAY THE REMAKE

Fr I haven't played anything quite like the first two games. I played the PSP version of the first and it's nice and has extra characters, so either the PSP version or the remake might do for ya.

For the record, the PSP version of the first Star Ocean, *is* a complete remake.

I have not played the original, but just so you know, there are balancing differences between First Departure (aka the PSP version) and First Departure R (aka the Switch version). In general, FDR is harder.

I played R and it was pretty damn good. The modern remakes are great if you want a more streamlined experience. The originals don't explain a whole lot(which some people find as part of the charm), so it's a bit difficult to figure out what to do in regards to the skills.

If you want a more modern build that you don't have to fuss with as much, R is your answer. If you're more of a retro purist, then I'd go with the original. Either way, keep a guide handy. There are plenty of spoiler-free ones that explain the item creation and recruitment.

Addendum; First Departure R is on Switch, if you like handheld.
