The other day I decided to play some Brutal Doom to relieve some tension (as one does), when I decided that simply wasn't enough.
After a laggy and rather unsuccessful attempt at Deathmatching bots on the Strife maps (which I had always thought would be awesome for this sort of thing), I decided to go back to one tried and true classic, my first-ever FPS: Wolfenstein 3D.
What I'm about to tell you is massively interesting to me for one simple reason: the Wolfenstein 3D maps were NEVER meant to be used for Deathmatch multiplayer action, so the fact that they work so well as such is almost shocking in a very good way.
It honestly didn't take long for the whole thing to become really, really fun -- with large corridors, sharp corners, no shortage of places to plan ambushes in, generous amounts of choke points sprinkled throughout and five doors to almost every room (as to unintentionally discourage camping), these provided excellent battlefields to go at it with bots. And once the Brutal Doom arsenal was involved? I'm not sure I'll ever voluntarily play another game with that mod -- the result is just THAT good, especially when a bot gets a hold of a really good weapon (the kind that one-shots you if you aren't careful) and you can just flush them out with grenades and then chase them down across vastly open spaces. We even got to a point where we both ran out of ammo and tried to melee our way to yet another frag, inching and dodging around walls and always mindful of other bots coming in through the multiple entrances and exits at any second and finding two sitting ducks to slaughter.
Like I said, I'm shocked by how well this works and I can only imagine that it'd be even better with real people.
... Although, you still need a sizable number of opponents to properly enjoy this.
I decided to set up a small match (against two bots) and I spent most of the match hunting them down across dozens of empty screens, which definitely took some of the enjoyment out of it.
