Wizardry Series - Have you tried it out?

So Wizardry 2 on the NES fixed the AC bug, so the difficulty progression made a lot more sense than in the first game (where suddenly you end up getting one-hit killed everywhere because the game thinks all your characters are running around nekked). Combat is again bordering on outstanding but even using an online map, navigating is a bit of a pain because everything is so featureless (plus add in increased use of spaces that teleport you and I personally can end up baffled).

I've got to character levels 7 or 8 and its all got too challenging to navigate for my tastes. Still, I played a total of about 8 enjoyable hours across the two games and saw enough to encourage me to revisit the rest of the series later. I have also learnt that there is a 'dungeon crawler' lover inside of me... at least if there is a map on display on screen! Time well spent, but I will go to the grave without completing either 1 or 2 of this series.

This excellent blog gives an insight into the difficultly of completing the original Wizardry 2 on PC.

"Wizardry II upped the ante by not only featuring all of the same elements but also requiring the player to import characters from the first game. If played "straight," a party slain in Wizardry II was permanently dead and the player--I'm completely serious--would have to win the first Wizardry again (or at least build up the characters to high enough levels in that game) before trying again in II. This is the only game I know whose permadeath requires starting over in an earlier game."

I will take a break from the series for now, but will skip through to Wizardry 6 on PC and see if I can get the map widget thing to work for it.

No but I really want to. Someone recommended the PS2 game to me a while back, I just haven't gotten around to it.

I have a love-hate relationship with them. Recently got a cheap-ass TPK on the Wizardry 1 remake, including my spare characters (thank goodness I made copies of my save file beforehand -_-). Wizardry 8 is where I got into the series, as well as blobber-style RPGs, years ago. I also tried Wizardry 5 on the SNES, and a translated SFC of Wiz6 but like... those games were wayyy too rough.

I definitely recommend Wiz8, let alone the Wiz1 remake. Both are really accessible. There's also Labyrinth of Lost Souls, which is a pretty chill and relatively straightforward and easier Wizardry experience. I've loved LoLS (yes really, that's the acronym) ever since I played it back on the PS3, and there's a port of it on Steam.

Turns out there is a second Wizardry 2 on the NES, which is really Wizardry 3. Apparently this one is even more combat focussed and has less difficult maps. Which makes me feel even worse about wandering around lost even though I am cheating by looking at maps!

Yes I have I own every one that´s in English also playing Variants Daphne on and off very nice game for being f2p. I also did play the mmo before it died heck I even played YS online before it died :(
