people with Windows 10, what do you plan to do when Steam will end its support for this OS? OUTSIDE of obvious upgrade to Windows 11.

because i personally only have one working laptop, and i don't wanna switch to Win11 ehh... i thought about using Linux at the very end of my laptop's life, but not now.
(i'm hearing faint noises of people with Legacy OSs typing here...)

a few clarifications: despite Microsoft ending Win10 support this year, there's extended support, so we have at least 5(?) years, i believe. plus, there will be no updates for the Steam app anymore, not something like "TODAY WE END SUPPORT FOR WIN10 FOR OUR APP, DON'T LAUNCH IT OR YOUR COMPUTER WILL EXPLODE!!!" (but would be funny)

when Steam ended support for WinXP, i was silent: i had Win7
when Steam ended support for Win7, i was silent: i had Win10
when Steam will end support for Win10, there'll be no one to stand for me anymore...
© from Lord of The Rings probably or something i dunno

By the time Steam drops support for Win10 I will already be on Win11 since it's gonna happen after a very long time. Steam only just recently dropped support for anything below Win10 so I'm not worried about it that much.

I imagine it'll be a ways down the road nd I'll have likely upgraded by then. If not, I'll play games through *alternative* means.

i believe of average drinks and styles one consumeth the proverbial cheeseburger
windows 10 ltsc i think it is called
windows 10 in that form, some compatibility quibbles aside, should function stably for some time for the average steam game player without a linux switch, should you be hesitant to try linux

In all fairness, they stopped support for Windows 7 not long ago. I'm sure by the time Win10 support ends, most people will have something that runs Win11 by then, hopefully.

i believe it is less of a bacon upon thy brow and more of a time of the laces
not wanting to switch to windows 11 not because they cannot, but rather because they do not want to, as windows 11 is a little funky

I agree with that. Hell, even in its final days, Win 10 is still a little rough around the edges. If it were up to me, I'd never stop using Windows 10, but it is what it is. Hopefully the fact that we're still years away from Steam support ending on Win10 might get Microsoft to get their shit together with Win11. (In my case, my PC is pretty old and can't run Win 11. But I plan on upgrading soon.)

I really don't see why you wouldn't just use the version that is actively developed on if you really want to use windows. Especially when differences between 10 and 11 don't seem that huge (to me). If anything I liked 11 more than 10 from what I've used them.
You're just prolonging the inevitable, being slowly crippled by lost software support if you're hell bent on using 10 until the bitter end. It just does not make sense to not upgrade imho.

Though, I admit might have a bit different way of looking at this since I never really liked 10 THAT much and I don't even have a windows pc in my house right now.

ill upgrade at the very last second, trying to get as much of windows 10 by then.

my windows 10 disk is only for fortnite which is on the epic games store
open mandriva is what i use for steam games

there is one difference which is absolutely UNACCEPTABLE they moved the volume hud from top left where it didn't bother anybody to middle bottom right in front of my anime subtitles

(also not having updates on 10 will be an upside for me)

you still can run steam on win 7 pretty sure
you can't. They stopped supporting anything below 10 a year ago. Valve said it was because elements of the program would stop supporting old versions of Windows so it was outside of their control.

I've thought on upgrading to 11 but I haven't really seen anything interesting being said about it other than UI changes, on the other hand, I don't really like the idea of having to rush to another OS because Win 10 has a deadline.

Oh alright, i just remember watching video of someone using steam on 7 few years ago
Still supporting win 7 for that long is pretty good

I would switch to linux if I could find a distro I like that works. Sure I like Kolibri os which is sadly not mean for gaming or parment use.

Im not sure how steam OS is today for PC use and not steamdeck use.

Also pain in the ass to switch OS and keep are you files where they use to be and such and all my 100s of save file what is located in my documents I don´t wanna deal with all that.

Im used to linux just never find anything I like. Biggest issue with linux is to damn many distro and to many idiots that think they know how to make a good OS and just fuck around. Aleast apple and microsoft knows how to make a well oild OS just sad they deicde to add dumb shit NOOO one fracking asked for.

But yeah last resort will be switching Linux im not chaning to Win 11. Microsoft and eat shit and choke on it. With their stupid AI bullshit and worthless TPM 2.0 that is not as secure as the claim it to be. As some one that worked IT security for 20+ years. I look at the TPM 2.0 and think well that how make tech obsolete fast and yet as secure as a condom with a hole in it.

Would my mini PC support steam its good good specs

I am on Windows 11 and i hate it::peacemario! i do believe it is a little early to be worrying about that, but nothing wrong with a long term plan. As someone else said there is a bunch of old stuff to play.

Each new windows I consider more and more switching to linux. I am so tired of these windows updates breaking everything, more ram usage for no reason, spyware and less options and whatnot. It also breaks compatibility with older games and playing then through a VM is just not the same. I only switched to 10 like 2 years ago and don't plan to switch to 11 any time soon.

Hate win10 so so much, legit worst os iv ever used. Moving right to Arch once its dead. Only thing stopping me from doing it right now is my main art software runs real bad under a compatibility layer.

Switch to Linux. I already have some experience with Mint, Ubuntu and the Linux shell so it wont be that big of a shift. I'm not sure what distro to go for though. Windows 11 is a bridge too far.
