I feel like these were an integral part of the pre-internet gaming experience.

Literally anyone could come up with the craziest theories, have absolutely no way to back them up, and convince you they were telling the truth... because you couldn't look into it.

What are some of your favorite schoolyard theories and rumors?

I was particularly fond of Pokemon-related stuff, particularly those that told you the craziest rewards you could get by stepping out-of-bounds, on all the tall grass that was juuuust outside the walkable area.

There was one that went around in my elementary school about how to get the hadoken in MegaMan X, only it was entirely wrong; it was something about having Chill Penguin bounce on the sides of his arena a certain number of times or something then quitting the stage and doing something else, I can't remember exactly. No idea where the kid got that from, probably just made it up. To be fair the actual way to get the hadoken is also pretty silly.

Tye-dye Yoshi in Yoshi's Story, Yoshi in Pokemon, Pikablue, Pikablack, never heard the rumor about the Triforce in OOT until years later online, the Mew Pokeball under the truck in Vermilion City, some mirror in Killer Instinct that would reflect the front of the character Orchid when she flashes her opponent, that Lara Croft nude code in Tomb Raider along with a fake character made up by a magazine named Valkyrie Wild, I think that's all of them?

Yoooo! The Mew thing was so frustrating that someone actually coded it into the game later on. I so wish I had that on a cartridge just to mess with someone XD

I definitely heard the rumour about the mirror with Orchid, that unlocked a memory.

There was also the classic Sheng Long fight in SF2. One of my friends dad's would get us with it a lot. He even had the EGM April fools article they did with the fake Sheng Long screens and info, had me fooled for awhile.

I remember my first time seeing Missingno (just off Cinnabar Island).

I literally was like "did I break the game? Did you break the game? Someone has broken the game" xD

Yeah especially if you cleared the Elite 4 a couple times and checked the Hall of Fame on the PC. Do it enough times and it glitches out and even plays different music!

Somebody told me you could save Aeris with a secret item. I kind of knew it was fake, but I tried anyway.

Tomb Raider, Orchid and Mew rumors were also popular in my school.

The Aeris rumors were crazy. Was the trick with the Saga Frontier disc true? I read it in a magazine and other kids told me it was true. But I never tried it because I never had both games at the same time.

It was something about taking out the FF7 disc when you were standing in a certain spot and putting in Saga Frontier while the game was still running. This would glitch the map up badly and allow you to walk to the northern continent with Aeris still in your party. From there you could plut the FF7 disc back in and continue the game with Aeris since you skipped the Temple of the Ancients.

Aeris has some residual lines from before they came up with the idea to kill her off. She says "I can't stand it" after the snowboard sequence.
