N64 Why Nintendo has never made a "Super Mario 65"?

They did try to make a sequel. The development name was Super Mario 128 and it would have included Yoshi and Luigi. However, the project fell through as it was getting late in the N64's life cycle and it was originally planned for the N64DD which greatly hurt development when the system was dropped. They moved development to Super Mario: Sunshine instead. Also, the game was the last time Shigeru Miyamoto worked as a director on a game. Every game since, he has been a producer at best.

I've always wanted a SM64 remake and a sequel. I was hoping Odyssey would've been more like SM64 but it wasn't. I like all of the Mario games, however SMB3, SMW, SM64 and SMG1 are my favorites. I also have a soft spot for SML2: 6GC and SM3DL. I think SM64 is in need of a remake, I'm not sure why it hasn't happened.

Well maybe they make it in switch 2! I think Mario 64 and legend of zelda ocarina of time deserve a sequel. I really wonder if they make a remake for them what going to happen. I really like to see Mario64 and legend of zelda completely dubed. I wonder who will talk as Happymasksalesman.(I hope Mr myamoto himself) but just imagine criss Pratt and.....well no need to Mario 65!

It’s called Super Mario Odyssey
Also it’s only called Mario 64 because the console it was made on was the Nintendo 64, it would never be called Mario 65

It’s why there’s a Super Metroid, a Famicom/GB/Advance Wars, New Super Mario Bros U and so on

Regardless of Mario 64's success, they may have also wanted a sequel to serve a greater purpose beyond being just "more Mario 64". 3D Mario games at least have a reputation for being less iterative, but more innovative. Whether those innovations are always successful or not, I leave to your opinion.

Galaxy 2 is the exception to the rule, given that game's initial development began as DLC for Galaxy 1.

What about Advance Wars on the Nintendo DS? Bet you feel silly right now /j

y honestlly think they should change the name if mario games, we have 64, i think they should drop the nuver at this point, like instead of mario LXV mario's mean bean machine or something like that

To humor this, Nintendo works on asking the question “can we come up with a concept that majorly pushes this kind is game forward?”

Their external studios don’t always abide by this, but the internal studios do. For Super Mario 64, I imagine the reason they never made a direct follow up to that game was because they didn’t want to create a Mario game that was an incremental upgrade to another. And, by the time Galaxy 2 came around and Nintendo proved they were okay with making an incremental sequel in their mainline franchise, 64’s team was long gone. Not out of the company, but in different positions.

Simply put, the stars never really aligned. Many of the people who made Super Mario 64 moved onto making another title you may have played: Pikmin! And other parts of that group of devs worked on other early GameCube and later N64 titles. Games can only get made if a large number of people agree to make it, and I guess such a project was never something a bunch of people wanted to do, even if they did throw around some ideas in various projects that could have made it into a hypothetical sequel project. For the record, Sunshine’s development is a whole story in itself, but it was a very different team from 64.

No one commented about Super Mario 64 DS.....that hurts as it added 30 new stars, new enemies, new bosses, new minigames, and multiplayer. Also playable Wario, Luigi and Yoshi.

Also why no 65, that's easy, The Nintendo 64 was a commercial failure, and the Gamecube was just a worse Dreamcast and PS2 rip off that also failed too. Kinda weird as being SEGA's rival for decades and always striving for better hardware was always Nintendo's Goal, well till the Wii. While it was a success, it's way full of the worst shovelware and Even has Nintendo's worst games ever. Now Nintendo, while still doing ok, is still consider the worst console maker ever, great portables though, and yes, the switch is a portable, not a console.

Well hold on. N64 was not really a commercial FAILURE, but it was a failure by Nintendo standards. Think about how Square always makes sales predictions that are ridiculously high.

Believe me, Saturn and PS1 are my babies from the fifth Gen, but I can’t deny what happened. N64 was a complicated situation, but I’ve made this mistake before on the forum and was corrected by people across the entire world. N64 was AROUND, but Saturn already had a large install base in Japan and PS1 already had a large install base… literally everywhere. And, thanks to it appealing to all regions, it took that generation more than any other console had ever done. N64 was able to gain a market by marketing itself as a toy and multiplayer machine, but you’re right to say that it never battled Sony’s dominance in terms of sales. Even so, a quote that always stuck with me regarding the console has been “behind every N64 were four controllers” which I think demonstrates how the system was able to be so ubiquitous despite not being in every household.

As for DS, that’s our fault. It’s a remake, but it’s as close to a 65 as we’ll ever get! It was actually my first experience with Super Mario 64, and for that I can only give it my respect.
