VR Why is the general quality of VR games still so low?

I think the main problem is that VR games focus too much on the VR part and not so much on the game part.

As an example, Sushi Ben, a game that was released in 2023 for VR and got a release last week that allows you to play without VR. The game is gorgeous, with an amazing aesthetic inspired by anime, and the character designs are very appealing. The story is a simple slice of life that mostly works because of the characters.

However, playing it is... not very fun. There's not much game to the game. The minigames are simple and absolutely worthless, because you can fish but not do anything with the catches, catch bugs but do nothing with the insects, capture ghosts but do nothing with the ghouls.

It doesn't help that the town is unnaturally barren unless an NPC is relevant to the current quest.

Might write a review on it... At any rate, playing it made me realize that about VR. The game is probably more fun on VR.

But you can play all of those games within a month and then you're left with a dust collector. There just isn't enough. Then I see a lot of these first-person VR games coming out and they still play like first year VR games. The VR diehards who decried "flat games" are a minority. Most people don't want to strap on some clunky, uncomfortable headset and get sweaty every single time they feel like playing a video game. I still have a few VR games to finish, however the thought of playing them is more of a hassle than they're worth. I bought physical copies of Behemoth and Saints & Sinners 2 for PSVR2 that I still need to finish. I also have some PSVR games to finish, however the PSVR is more of a pain in the ass with all of the wires.
I always found the whole "flat games" thing really cringe. You have some valid points. I would also add that the build quality of the original PSVR helmet was cheap and crappy and I found camera tracking to be a nightmare.

It's a shame though, because those games I posted are some of the most fun experiences I've ever had only dragged down by the issues with the PSVR hardware itself.

Moss, Wipeout and Job simulator were the only games VR games I could play that didn't make me want to lose my lunch. I wish that more games focused on something original rather than a tacked on version to an existing game.

I think there is also the embarrassment of covering your eyes with the silly thing. I seen VR used as a joke in many TV commercials. Also this might just be my personal opinion but I stay away from any sort of modern wearable tech. I believe the radiation especially wireless is harmful for long periods of time.
