I always kind of passed over undubs until I tried one recently that just changed my mind. I tried the old skies of Arcadia undub circa 2021. What sold me was the voices in the fight scenes. The battle cries sound so much better in Japanese. I think also a lot of times in the games that the Japanese voice actors are more talented than the English voice actors. To me they sound better and more convincing. And I only know a few words of Japanese myself. I just wanna know what other people think about undubs and why you prefer them or not.

Unless the English voices are terrible I don't really care that much. Sometimes I download undubs just because the file sizes are smaller. In a few cases I actually think the English dubs are better than the original. Mischief Makers for example is pretty annoying in English but the undub is even more annoying. The constant 'shake shake' is bad enough but the Japanese one's high pitched and aggravating.

In some cases, Undubs are critical. When the English delivery lacks passion and quality, for example, or when voices keep changing between installments. All in all, though, I prefer playing games without voices at all, if given the choice.

If the game was made by its preferred place then i use the intended dub.
Like Stellar Blade, i set the language to Korean.
Even games like MGS i play in Japanese, although the English dubbing is great. Same with God Hand and Viewtiful Joe

For real? I actually want to check it out now. Im sure its annoying but I find the differences fascinating. Like if you ever hear goku's original voice it's not even a male. I wish we could just hurry up and invent the technology from The Matrix already so I could just plug a cable into the back of my head and learn Japanese in a couple minutes.

Oh I can post here. Wow I really have to be careful now. Heh. I was playing Shining Force III scen1 on the actual Saturn in JPN because I had planned to play them all that way and I first played it with a Pro Action Replay Plus. I only got a bit into scen2. The power of the emulator now. The first collection, I got gave me the English version and I was wondering why.

Besides that, eh. It depends how familiar I am with the setting. I cannot play any Yakuza/Like a Dragon such game with English it's too jarring. I did choose to play Wild Arms 5 with the original English and while one voice is pretty bad it's not that common to destroy my experience. I have been fiddling around with Castlevania on the DS and Order of Ecclesia is an odd one because there are just really unusual "hey dude." "Hey wuz up" comments so that's odd. I stopped playing that because I didn't want to save state through basic stages. I already did that for a boss or two and felt like I shoulda been more patient so I figured, yea I don't feel right cheesing the game anymore.

I know I basically rambled. I think a lot of Japanese voice acting really does convey a strong emotion, if I am playing Persona and there is english VA I'd probably just use it, if it is there hah.

For Shining Force 3 I play with battle voices off. I grew up playing the series and it didn't have voices until the third entry; I personally feel it adds nothing.

The reason even the fan translated version of Scenario 1 has English voices is because it uses that as a base (but modifies the ending so that it actually bridges properly into the other scenarios, rather than the original ending of the overseas release that tries to close out the game in one scenario).

I never finished that GG game. Good going, oh I mean Game Gear. Heh. There was a sequel to SFII. I just downloaded a collection of Shining Force 3 and the first one was the English version so I was like screw this "Arctic Blast." I actually find Shining Force III gets really aggravating with their gimmicks but that this is a different topic. I am in Scenario III now.....Anyway. Hah isn't what SF3 was left to be the Golden Sun problem now.

Can I get an Amen? I only barely played the first Golden Sun and it seems bothersome. It seems more likely than Mega Man Legends. I don't know how to end this post. I think undubs are an cool option. I'd like to declaratively Not on my Watch they are worse. I haven't found one yet hah. Some edits, to clear things up. I tend to be too timid. I hope I made it clear b/t Golden Sun and Shining Force though that wasn't the point of this topic.

Most of the time I prefer undubs, but in long JRPGs (if they are voiced of course) I keep the English dub because I don't want to read subtitles for 100 hours. Though if English localization has a lot of quastionable changes compared to the original, then I'll play the undub version for sure.

There is also the problem when dubbing decharacterizes the material in a way that is detrimental to the source. Not only delivery, but intentional or even unsolicited freedom. I always prefer original, not only for Japanese media, anything really. But I cannot say I never enjoyed DUBs before, like Dragon Ball and Yu-Yu Hakusho.

Megaman 8 is another example

the ''Jump Jump'' and ''Slide Slide'' is 100x worse in japanese

Yeah especially when they pick some good voice actors. I like goku's original Japanese voice but I also like his English voice. It sounds more deep and authoritarian but the Japanese one sounds more wild.

That's always the way I remember them being but I also grew up in the days of dos. And we didn't have a CD drive or a sound card. So just no voices and plenty of beeps.
