Why has "today" started since the year 2000?

For me little has changed between 2021 and 2024...

Hope that this year will mark the true start of the decade.

You know what? You're somewhat right.

The 80's in itself looks like a door to another reality.

I can hardly accept it was almost half a century ago.

I think that's because it kind of was. We were on the verge of so many things. Technology began to expand rapidly. MTV changed the face of music and how you were exposed to it.

I think there's something really magical about new wave. It sounds like nothing else.

I think that depends on what you mean by new wave. The original version was basically a spin-off from punk rock, softening the sound a bit while keeping the 3-chord structure. That would later combine with post-punk and "college rock" (what was later called alternative rock) into other genres that popped up in the late 80s and 90s.

But I have a feeling you might be talking about gated reverb, which was a sound exclusive to the 80s (at least until it was revived decades later in synthwave and the like). That was often combined with early synthesizer by synthpop bands that were often incorrectly labeled as new wave.

I remember the Vox video about these reverbs (as much as I don't like Vox that much).

As for New Wave I've never been good with labels since I still struggle to recognise prog music lol.

On the other hand when I hear 90's FM guitar in Japanese musics from that era.

Genres can be difficult to define because they are not always 100% separated from each other due to many musicians experimenting with and fusing them together. Even some bands we think of as definitively part of one genre often aren't exactly that. (For example, everyone thinks of Nirvana as the grunge band, but not everyone knows their style is a mix of grunge, punk, noise rock, and various alt rock influences. This is why they sound more like the Pixies or Sonic Youth than 100% grunge bands like Soundgarden.)

The main difference between new wave and synthpop is how reliant they are on the keyboard. Older new wave bands like Blondie, The Talking Heads, and Devo were much more reliant on conventional instruments, particularly because synthesizers were not popular yet. Synths didn't become a big thing until Tubeway Army (later renamed after the vocalist, Gary Numan) released their hit second single "Are Friends Electric?" (Their first single "Down at the Park", didn't do as good due to some rather shockingly explicit lyrics for the time.) So synths became popular enough that even some new wave bands switched to using them as their main instrument and became synthpop bands. (Just to name a few good ones, A Flock of Seagulls, Depeche Mode, and the Eurythmics.)

As for prog, it's basically classic rock with a classical structure. Think Emerson, Lake & Palmer, King Crimson, Genesis, Blue Öyster Cult, and Electric Light Orchestra. It differs from heavy metal in that it doesn't really use power chords much, if at all. There are exceptions, though; Led Zepplin straddles the line between prog and metal.

The DSL, the seventh generation of consoles and touch-responsive phones have definitively brought the 20th century into the 21st, however, from that particular moment on the feeling of novelty has completely faded, along with the perception that time is truly advancing, because those models are still used today as a modern base, but simply applying enhancements.

Moreover, it should be added that almost all consumers have stopped archiving physical copies and companies are not genuinely interested in preservation in a serious way, therefore, if I look for a game from the original PlayStation in the second-hand market, I might find it and it may still work, while since the PS3 the games that have been released as digital exclusives that no longer exist anywhere (if not thanks to the piracy) and so they have been forgotten and are no longer used as representatives of a specific historical period: they are like Twitch streamers (you find them now and in seven days they are already buried under the dust of forgetfulness).

The noughties definitely have their own vibes too, but from the 10s until now it still feels the same. Then again, it may be too early to tell, 20-30 years from now it will be clearer

We are already five years in the 2020's (well, 4 since 2020 was still the 2010's technically) yet we don't see many big differences aesthetics-wise...

I mean, aesthetic differences don't just happen and there's always been a lot of overlap between decades. But for example, clothing-wise there's a big difference between nowadays and the 00s. Also in marketing/branding, interface design and even interior decorating there's been a shift towards minimalism in the last years (something which I'm not really a fan of, tbh)

I blame the internet. Us all being connected really just brings excutement for stuff down, because it's not just you and your local friends discussing new things and feeling trendy because of it anymore, it's everyone freaking out about the new thing and then moving on in like 3 4 days, not even a week or so anymore like it was in the 2010's. I think there should be a few days worldwide where the internet just shuts off and we have to be forced to interact with each other in public again.

As I've said before, everything will be haha boob soup and we will eat bugs and like it.

Sounds like Hell on Earth for me.

We won't go to that point.

Agreed... But I'll probably spend my day reading rather than doing anything.
