why does the anime community hate cgi so much?

I mean full 3D anime like Land of the Lustrous are pretty decent

My problem is 3D Injection on 2D animation!
I don't hate it and I understand it was made for Budget issues, But I also acknowledged it's ugly as fuck when 0 attempts are being made to stylish it to look similar to the artstyle of the show

Multiple 3D horses and knights in Overlord: Ok I respect that
Multiple 3D horses in Undead Unluck: Quite jarring

And then there is Thermae Romae Novae, which spreads 3D from time to time and jumpscares you in the face with a scene of the protagonist rotating a Bowl from low angle

A lot of times the directors just don't know how to balance it with the hand drawn stuff. Or others it just looks bad in general. I quite liked Ghost in the Shell SAC_2045 but I realize why others didn't.

I would still say that Blue Submarine N°6 kinda worked because the only CGI elements were the underwater machines and some of the more abstract enemies.

CGIs can be acceptable when it comes to vehicles and artificial things, less so for nature and living things.

It looks bad especially if there's transition from hand drawn

Shield Hero was one of the worst instances of this. The animation already wasn't good, then we get some sort of "rock" creature or something that's animated horribly with CGI and it looked like it was made of piles of literal shit.

I'm really sorry if it's not the subject but I can hardly read what you're telling unless I'm in reply mode.

I wish Berserk 2016 never used CGIs...

The first time I saw obvious CGI for an anime, it was Inuyashiki. The 3D models look awful, especially when the protag is transforming.

My main complaint with CG is that it poorly handles more eccentric art styles. The thing I love about traditional 2D is that the artist's personal flair can shine through. They don't need to sand down their style to accommodate a computer-assisted animation process. Beastars is an example of good-looking CGI but you'll notice it's also an uncomplicated art style; effectively, animal parts grafted onto a mostly human body.

The other thing about CG is that it can and does promote artistic stagnation. Pixar is a recent example, what with their over-reliance on that "bean mouth" style that most audiences are sick of. But it's relatively easy to animate, so that's what movie-goers get.

Honestly this. Biggest misuse of CGI ever imo.
Even a simplified animation in 2D would've been enough.

In a better timeline David Prod could've made a Berserk anime adaption.

Inuyashiki would be in my top 10 anime list if it wasn't for the awful animation. The fight where Inuyashiki and Shishigami are flying through the city fighting was so painful to watch. The building models, the rockets and whatever else they used.

Because its Lazy, but its important to recognise that it CG integration wasn't always Lazy.

Berserk, 2016 has worse CGI integration than Blue Submarine No'6 had way back in 1998.
Most modern CGI "Anime" doesn't run at a smooth framerate. Anime is typically drawn at 12 frames per second, but its stylised to seem smooth, so much so that Anime had the reputation as being superior to western cartoons due to this fluidity since the mid 90's.
Not so much now-a-days.
Pumping out CGI at 12FPS looks choppy, despite all 3D professional Animation software being able to generate additional frames for motion in-between the key frames.
So there is literally no excuse as to why 24fps isn't present in the final product.

Heck, if you watch the Ultraman series on Netflix (which is good btw) its framerate is inconsistent.
Close up shots are 24fps, whilst wide shots are 12fps. Its distractingly noticeable when a character goes from moving fluidly to a glorified power point and back again..

It's lazy.
Good CGI integration is rare, off the top of my head the only studio that still does it well would be Trigger. Beyond them? Things look rough.

I think the main issue is the "jerky" movements (see Quake 1 in 1996) which makes it uncanny and weird when other characters are moving at 24 fps.

Blue Submarine N°6 has visibly old CGIs yet since it's an OVA it still stood up pretty well for something that came in '98

And since most of them are underwater the filter makes it harder to see the flaws.

Looking at CGIs from a 90's movie on a HD/4K screen makes you notice the issues more easily than on an old CRT.

I will say that dragonball super: super hero was the only time I was impressed with a pure cgi animated version by a Japanese production, it was used sparingly in broly and was thankfully perfected by the time they did super hero, of course the amazing recap animation at the start would've been my preferred way to do the whole movie, it still turned out absolutley amazing given that it is a CGI movie.

My opinion as to why the CGI is being used for FOTNS again after it was used for the second season of souten no ken, is likely that whomever is calling the shots with the overall IP control of the NO ken series, absolutely thinks CGI looks better than hand drawn animation. All the cutscenes in FOTNS lost paradise looked absolutely amazing and it would've looked way better if done in that style. Hand drawn would've suited it best though.

I think that because it's so action and fight based with excessive detail, no one wants to pay for it or someone overseeing the no ken adaptations loves CGI, I'm willing to bet on the latter.

Honestly all modern CG Anime should be held to a standard:
If Zoids chaotic century from 2000 has better CGI integration then you.
Your production should be immediately cancelled.
It's insane how lazy CG has become.

This right here is another reason I'm wary of CG. Anime production is already an exploitative industry that disrespects and undermines their employed talent. While CG can be used well, it seems that the primary reason anime studio execs want to use it is because they don't want to pay 2D artists what they're worth.

I don't dislike CGI in anime, look at Studio Orange for instance with HnK and Beastars for example. The problem is when a studio doesn't have the budget and uses CGI, it tends to be extremely obvious and look very cheap in a bad way.

I want hand drawn animation. I enjoy hand drawn animation. The more obviously it's not hand drawn, the less I like it for that alone. CG is pretty much the antithesis of hand drawn.

It also tends to be distracting due to heavily inconsistent visuals.

I'm of two minds about CGI in anime, solely because I like Mr. Stain on Junk Alley, which had early CG animation. It added to the uncanny vibe of the entire thing. But then we get stuff like the 2016 Berserk... I guess it just depends.

If people at large truly disliked it, I doubt it'd still be everywhere like it is.

Otherwise, good CGI requires money and anime productions don't have it. They also have been flirting with "TV grade CG" since before it was passable. It was the 1990's we last saw cars animated by hands, and yet the CG cars they gave us looked pretty bad and out of place.

In the noughts, I believe only GiTS SAC had good CG integration with 2D animation, mostly because that show was blurry and the textures had grainy look to them, it made them look very at home. Other anime would only catch up in the 2010's.

In the 2010's, it was common to open an anime to shots of weirdly animated CG pedestrians. CG wasn't just for things any more, it was for people. We also had some good looking fully GC shows like Bubuki Buranki and Houseki no Kuni. All CG means no poor integration with 2D animation.

Nowadays I think it look good enough most of the time that people mostly stopped bitching. I think the hate CGI train comes from our legacy of watching it be bad. Although, I haven't been watching much anime. I watched Dandadan and Train to the end of the world, and I don't remember seeing anything I thought looked egregious. Lazarus also looked pretty good to me.
