am just curious as of recently because everyone is saying the new fist of the north star anime is going to fail or be bad because its cgi

They hate bad CGI. Stuff in Evangelion was okay, some stuff in Love Live was fine, some shows can do it well. Fucking Beastars is absolutely amazing.

Its going to fail because its shitty ass Jojo CGI. Its a style that only flourishes properly when drawn with care and love. Where other styles can better adapt for 3D, Fist and Jojo arent those styles.

Make sense?

personally i don't hate CG as a whole.
you can do some really good things with it like the studio orange productions or some truly incredible things like "gantz O". however you need a team capable of doing good stuff with it, maybe by using a particular artstyle and navigating around the budget limitations or you need a truly solid CG engine capable of consistent levels of detail and fluid animations.
the latest hokuto no ken trailer is just the latest on a long and horrifying list of low budget & low quality animes. they can churn this stuff out faster and apparently on the cheap, with a lot of outsourcing to freelancers or studios.

For me it USUALLY doesn't look good next to hand drawn. It looks separate from the composition of the overall image. Like bad Photoshop edit. There are exceptions and it can be effective. Also sometimes it's not that its CG that makes it bad, but often it's cheap looking CG lol. On paper I do like the idea of combining them. I'd be curious if anybody has any recommendations in terms of a show or project that blends them gracefully.

I don't hate cgi, but when used for an anime series it just ends up looking like a PS2 game.

I don't hate it, but when a traditional art style gets mixed with a new one, there tends to be some friction.

At least CGI is much subtler now, resulting on enhancers rather than distractions.

I don't hate CG in and of itself. It can look good when put in the right hands—like in "Medalist" or "Girls Band Cry". It's just not as aesthetically pleasing as traditional hand-drawn animation.

Fist of the North Star already has a history with CGI and it's not a great one. The Fist of the Blue Sky anime is really ugly in motion and personally I'd not trust the new show to look good after seeing that.

CG Anime can look good but multiple high profile examples have soured people on it. If it's used sparingly or smartly it can look great, but something like the newer Berserk show is a great example of it being used to save money and labor and it ruined it.

CGI is often done to save money or because the animators lack the skill to draw complex scenes. That generally also leads to the CGI being bad. If the producers don't have the money for good 2D animation or animators, they won't have it for 3D either. I don't have anything against the method of 3D animation itself. Western 3D animation is amazing and has been for a long time.

Becuse 90% of the time the CGI is ass. And I wonder why in the flying fuck in 2025 CGI is worse than it was in early 2000 like how did we go backwards ???

I recommend every one that has not seen it to watch this anime. Dragon´s Haven.
An OVA where in drew every grain of sand for HAND. This will explain a bit why hand drawn anime is often better than CGI or PC drawn animation.

I love modern animation but it does not hold a candle to hand drawn and CGI dream to even be 1% as good.

Yes I love old school anime but im not nostalgia blind to the point I can´t enjoy modern but when it comes to art hands down old school. But believe me 70-80-90 and early 2000 anime had equally as much trash anime as today have.

Because most of the time it looks awful

I also believe many people just want traditional animation
America completely murdered it's 2D animation
European 2D animation exist but its on life support
Asia is the only place left that doing more or less big budget traditional animation and most of it comes from anime and Japan

It's fine if done well, but a lot of stuff looks like crappy video game cut scenes edited in that looks terrible compared the animation.

Case in point being the Universe Tournament ring building scenes in Dragon Ball Super, doesn't match the animation style at all.

Thing is, when the PS2 first came out, just about every anime got a PS2 game. Most of the time you would get CGI openings that were basically 3D versions of the anime originals. Gundam for example. There's also Fist of The North Star. Bleach, InuYasha, Fullmetal Alchemist, Rurouni Kenshin, Yu Yu Hakusho, you name it. Then you had anime games like DBZ or Naruto that used anime clips instead.

I am totally cool with cgi. Sometimes it does get really creepy when they swap from hand drawn to cgi and the eyes have the weird change to it....

It's jarring, the fluidity of 2D animation at 24fps doesn't translate properly. But I don't hate it, the new Trigun was entirely CG and it was incredible it just requires considerable effort.

It depends, but generally I dislike it. That said, I have to imagine this blew people's minds at the time (1983):

But as far as Fist of the North Star goes, this is closing in on being 40 years old and still looks pretty great now.

If people like anime they love the visual style and even how the frames are in motion in the way animes are.

When you get to know X as an information it's the way you learn it and how you memorize it, so when brain works in the way it remembers and compares and when what you experience is not like how you were used to it seems so weird. Naturally getting used to an anime in the way it's and then it changes a lot can make you weirded out.

Another thing is animation and 3D quality in animes usually not okay. They look like bad quality animations news channels does to show how an accident happened or something. If the animation was in Blizzard or Square Enix cutscene quality then you could hardly complain but already anime quality dropped + CGI doesn't seem good anymore lol. For example last time I watched a Resident Evil movie that's 3D animation (I forgot its name) it looked so weird and bad lol. Even Persona video game cutscenes would be a better choice despite how low quality they are in some bad fan level lol.

Not to mention for laziness already 3D objects on 2D drawn background and characters are a big issue for decades and then even style inconsistent between 2D background and how characters designed can be so BS, it makes CGI usage sometimes an obvious bad choice. I understand how it eases the development, no argument to that but it just looks so bad lol. But if it's done right in the way it looks hand drawn 2D then no one would complain and it can look better than traditional animes.

Last thing to mention is frame-rate of the animation seems so weird when things get 3D because it's higher than what people used to in animes. Low enough FPS like 21 FPS when nothing "fast" happens and then when things get fast around 16 FPS makes your brain can watch something for a long time without getting tired much and this is the way people can enter into "watching mode", but animation movies make FPS so high you constantly see something moves so fast your brain feels sluggish and this is one of the reason for why those got used to watching anime complains about such stuff. Perhaps only gamers would complain how 2D and low FPS animes are so they would like CGI stuff, but when it comes Fist of the North Star that targets old people you just gotta use the old style and all you can do is improve the old style a little to make it seems like it's released back then but in an alternate universe lol.

North Star has enough of a unique artstyle to where the models actually look good and not just ugly CG blobs. The biggest problem for this and all the is the movement and framerate. It looks stilted and especially when making shows primarily about fighting, none the less Fist of the fucking North Star, your animation NEEDS to have good flow and impact. They're also doing the thing where SOME shots are in 2D, while others are CG, which is mind boggling, just stick to one or the other, and it ain't a style thing cuz Kengan Ashura did that shit too.

Honestly, if they wanna do the CG shit, leave it for movies. Those have much bigger animation budgets and time, and while the only time I've seen it in anime movie was Super Broly, it looked pretty damn good there.

Can't speak for the "anime community" here but we animation/illustration peeps think it looks tacky and awful when it's trying to emulate/replicate hand-drawn images.
If its used to do it's own thing or even compositing, it's usually fine.

But damn, some of the CG anime stuff looks like hot dog shit on a plastic bag, lol.
