Not even Armstrong or alphonse could save it

Spoilers for the movie and show, long rant ahead:

Watched the 2003 fullmetal alchemist anime between july and august of this year, could've finished sooner in a month like brotherhood if i didn't have gotten a new external disc.

I really enjoyed it, especially loved the final episodes, at first it didn't click with me as much as when i watched brotherhood in 2022, mostly because the show's slower pace and differences from the manga (like the 2 parter the "other elric brothers" wich is an adaptation from a novel from arakawa) but when It diverged fully for me it was the best, like what they did with tucker, lust or sloth, and even sometimes did stuff the manga or brotherhood do but better (the whole thing with izumi wich is a lot better than the Briggs episodes, maes hughes death, etc), really great stuff.

But then I got curious: what about the movie that serves as an ending to the show? what about it turning 20 this year? why is it so divisive? why much like the show it isn't on any streaming site and most likely not even on blu-ray?

Then I watched it in a few days...completely hated it, it's the type of movie I dislike the most and can't seem to finish in a day: boring, mostly emotionless, hard to follow, visuals that aren't special despite being a theatrical feature film, score that dosen't communicate anything or feels good to listen to, boring direction, I could keep listing.

I get the movie was made in Less than a year since the first fma anime ended in October 2004 and this movie was made just a few months later in july, but still, if the show was enjoyable, why couldn't the movie have been?

There's so many bad things still: why does the movie open like this, why there is a singing part when fma NEVER did this, why they use the word gypsie so many times to the point the people watching become numb, why does Roy have the ability to create hot-air when all he did was fire, why the transitions between the 2 worlds are non-existent and make the movie more annoying to watch, why izumi was fine (you know, ill but still keeping a fight) but then the movie glosses over her death, why dosen't wrath speak that much, why does gluttony become a monstrosity that makes "fake" philosopher stones from his body, etc.

And the worst part: the ending dosen't even conclude the 2003 anime all that well, I enjoyed the way the actual show ended rather than "hey al, it seems there will be a war around here, better be prepared, it seems you don't care about the people whe've met in our journey and only care about edwardo-kun, that's okay"

That's why I still consider brotherhood superior, it was a full show from beginning to end that despite it's flaws, it told it's story well even if a bit rapidly at the beginning compared to the manga, it didn't have production issues like 2003 that felt like the show was missing episodes (episodes 35 - 38 and some after) it had better music direction and overall better ost, it had more epic and or memorable moments, better animation, a better villain, and on top of that, a great way to defeat him.

All to say: I admire the team at bones for making 2003, and the way they bringed the story to life their first time, but they massively fucked up this movie, and can't say I didn't expect knowing how these shonen movies turn out, but that's the thing: other studios used to pump out 1 at least a year, meanwhile bones only did 2 original fma movies and completely ruined both.

Only 3 good things I could make out of this

1: alternate king Bradley as a jewish P/orn0 director

2: the live action movies despite being bad, at least are better than the animated ones and also "funny bad" while also doing an acceptable adaptation for the low budget they have.

3: the dvd bonuses like the live action featurette or the chibi short.

I truly hope if I someday decide to watch it, the soul eater anime dosen't end up having something similar to this, although In any case I could just read the manga.

Hope you enjoyed reading this, normally I don't rant on the Internet but I felt this was the right occasion.

It's just the final episode to the anime series that trailed off into filler. It ain't bad.

Conqueror of Shamballa is what happens when you put in the last few episodes in a series sprinkle it with some high budget animation.
The thing is: it doesn't look necessarily better than the show, it's just that it's in widescreen and has bigger shots, but if they've released just on DVD I wouldn't complain

Man, I completely forgot I watched it and I like Fullmetal.

The answer is they thought that they could milk more money out of it because the series did well. That’s how anime studio Sunrise practiced business with the Gundam series and the fact that Bones were comprised majorly by former Sunrise staff and animators.

Thanks for the answer, it makes me sad really, such a wonderful show to end like that, I assume bones didn't have anything to do with the last soul eater show? (don't remember it's name)

It really pisses me off back then I really loved the series but they went a little greedy and ruined everything with those last few episodes.

Dunno, i personally liked old Alchemist and Shamballa... but it was gorillion years ago, so i dont know if i would have same impression nowadays. What im 100% sure is that i liked it way more than Brotherhood and manga source material.

no it's not. Anime sometimes has big events for the finale. It's not the first anime movie nor is it the last to get a theatrical treatment. If you say COS is milking it, then any movie based on an anime is milking it. It's either filler stories or final episodes.

I liked the idea of a parallel world but with the movie I started forgetting it's a FMA one...

I'm fine with FMA '03 and reading the manga.

Apparently it was gonna be another arc but became a movie

Semi-old thread, but the actual reason it is the way it is, is because Bones didn't wanna do it. Whether it was too long and whether they thought the series had run its course, or they were working on other projects, they just didn't want to give it the care it needed. It was pitched as a 13 episode OVA/Mini-Series first, then they said no and Aikawa tried to get a 3 hour long movie for it, which they also said no to. He then had to compress his entire story down to an hour and 45 minutes.

You can still see outlines and notes of the original script in the Shamballa Scenario Book they made, and there was a lot of things cut. Some questionable, some making the movie sound better. It's a mixed bag. In directors commentary for the movie that Aikawa participated in, he almost sounds distraught talking about the changes, you can kind of tell he feels like he got screwed over in the end with the movie. I personally still love the movie, FMA 2003 is probably one of if not my favorite anime, but COS definitely could've been way better and it hurts knowing even the writer feels the same. I'm just glad I enjoy the movie still and I think it doesn't get the credit it all deserves, but that goes for 2003 in general.

Because it was originally intended to be a full lenght series so they could finish up the plot in fma 2003 but that didn't happen for some reason. So they made it a movie. Apperently it was because brotherhood was already in production.

I love sho aikawa as a writer so this makes me sad for him. His other series are great. If you want to see what he can do completely unhindred watch concrete revolution or un-go.

Because it doesn't follow the Manga. Whilst that isn't inherently a detriment it ultimately didn't have the support of the Hiromu Arakawa creative direction.

It's also a capstone film. It exists to give the series a happy ending by reuniting Al and Ed.
It's common in franchise works. Digimon Tamers has Runaway Locomon
(But that's so good Chiaki J. Konaka, Tamers writer considers it canon despite it being written a differ dude, Hiro Masaki) and every Sentai/kamen Rider has a cross over with the previous season which allows the previous season to have it's capstone. If done well it's a extra bit of fan service & a thank you for the fans.
Heck, some Kamen Rider cross over plots revolve around weddings to pay off the previous seasons romance arcs.

It's just that Conqueror of Shamballa isn't as good as Runaway Locomon (hence why I brought it up)
It was rejected by the fans & Brotherhood made the original FMA obsolete.

I am a fan of its music:

thanks for the answer, i originally got the movie with both english and japanese audio, but it was a bit heavy for my device (3gb) but it also included commentary in both languages, perhaps i should give it a go, even if just listening to the commentary because i really did not enjoy the movie

it didn't really make it obsolete, it's just a different take on the story, and a great one at that, i explain it on the main post, but anyway thanks for the answer and that digimon fact, perhaps if i someday watch it i will also watch the movie (altough i heard bad things for the adventure films)

I've actually really wondered what else he's made that I could watch since I absolutely loved his style in 03. Thank you for telling me about those, I'm definitely watching them. I kind of feel dumb never thinking to look much into his other works now! Haha

I would classify sho aikawa as a very unhinged writer. In a good way that is, so prepeare to see some really wild stuff. Other stuff you should look in to which was written by him is ghost slayers ayashi and neo ranga. Also he was the writer for martian successor nadesico aswell.

Since you mentioned kamen rider. Sho aikawa was also the main writer for the second half of kamen rider blade (it's an improvement)
