For clarity I mean the anime. Just wondering what other people think of it so far. I believe the most recent episode to date is episode 7 as of today's date (20 May).

Apologies if I missed it but I couldn't find a pre existing thread for this and thought it would be cool to discuss as we go along....

Beware of spoilers to those not up to date!

It seems to have gotten pretty bad reviews overall. Not that that will stop me from watching it.
I never go by others' opinions with anime.
I will wait for the first season to be finished, though, so when I get an itch to watch a new series, I can binge it in one go.

Though, the bad reviews could be from filthy, stinking GOBLINS!!!
wanting to ruin any chance this anime has at succeeding...

Oh, I see it now. It was a BIG GOBLIN!!! writing the reviews.
They are smart enough to talk and not drink their own pee.
They could RUIN an anime with bad reviews... crafty GOBLINS!!!

It looks interesting, I'll give it a go.

...goblins...

You know what they could have done? That this guy was Spike's brother from another mother, and the events happen few years after Bebop where he busts out of Prison thx to grown up Edward who fully transformed into a woman, or something.

Nostalgia is nice when its organic, but it feels like the creator keeps getting pressed for 'cowboy bebop magic' (much like 'bioware magic'). Something orginal like Samurai Champloo would have been better I feel. I have no interest in watching it knowing more about it now, but the initial key visuals looked good. I think all the new flcl that come out have done a better job on playing into nostalgia as well.

In Watanabe's own words:

On Keiko Nobumoto:
“[Nobumoto] was a part of the project from the very start when we were developing the story and characters. We got a lot of advice from her during that phase, but she did fall very ill while we were trying to write the scripts, so we couldn’t ask her for the scripts. So we took that on ourselves, all the knowledge that she’s given us, to finish writing the story. If Lazarus does remind people of Cowboy Bebop, it’s probably because we worked with Nobumoto together to write the story.”

On comparing Lazarus to Cowboy Bebop:
"In no way am I doing the same thing on purpose, making a cameo, or paying homage to my previous works. Everything is for a reason, and I want you to watch it with fresh eyes.”

On his inspiration for the show:
“Are you familiar with the Boo Radleys?.... The original Radley song [‘Lazarus’] came out in ’93 or probably ’94. It’s been a while since I’ve listened to it, but I got really inspired after listening to it. That is a big reason why Lazarus came to be. So if anyone does have this old CD, I would tell them to take it out and give it a listen.”

Listening to the song should be familiar to anyone who's seen the ending sequence of the show. Here's the 12" vinyl version for anyone interested:

This is a song about redemption, self realisation and a second lease on life/ second wind following self discovery, with the hints of regret that led us there. It's a song about healing (hapna drug link)... It could be that the show is taking this concept and applying it both on an individual level but on a larger scale of humankind as whole.

Of course it's down to the individual to decide, but based on what I've read, and what I've seen of the show so far, I strongly disagree that he's trying to do another Bebop.

If you're talking about the ridiculous IGN review, I would just discard / ignore it. 5/10 is a criminal review score. They are indeed goblins.

Yeah I've been catching the broadcast on toonami every sunday. I like the plot a lot, the characters aren't the most interesting like in Watanabe's other works. If you are comparing it to his other stuff it's not amazing, but I don't think every show from a creator has to be an amazing thing. It's good enough to keep me interested for the entire show. ::cirnoshrug

Ah, I KNEW it!

The FILTHY!!!... STINKING!!!!... GOBLINS!!!! the lot of them! They crawl in the shadows, plotting their tiny chaos GOBLINS!!! everywhere! But I shall watch the SHOW!!!, yes, I will sit through the chaos and enjoy the madness!

That will surely teach those BIG STINKING GOBLINS!!! to try and GOBLINIZE!!! a show... yes!

To turn entertainment into their twisted playground! And once I’m done, I’ll give it a HIGH SCORE REVIEW!!! because in the end, even GOBLINS!!! know quality when they see it!

Thank you for letting me know, cheers!

Didn't even know it dropped might just wait till it ends then watch it at once but I'm so gassed about it been a min since I watched anime in a whole so I'm sure it's going to be a good show to get me back.

Let me know what you think when you get around to it! I normally binge watch but tuning in weekly is pretty cool too. Something to look forward to each weekend.

Tfw "it feels like" opinion comment receives essay response with quotes from production (about not being able to ask for their scripts [kek]) and full disavow disagreement. I must admit I'm jealous of those with more free time than myself.

I'm so sorry I had the wrong opinion that doesn't align perfectly with quotes from the production themselves my dear leader please forgive me.
Dear subject, there's no such thing as a wrong opinion (but an uninformed one is certainly possible). I was just giving mine back. I hope that's okay.

Not really enjoying it since the latest episode dropped, mostly cause the show puts up a deadly scenario involving their livelihoods, yet most of the cast don't seem to mind it at all. So it was hard for me to invest into the story, when it doesn't feel like I'm suppose to take it seriously.

I do like all the environment work in the background, so I've been staring at that more as I keep digesting each episode with friends.

I've heard others also slightly disenchanted by the aloof cast, but I don't mind it at all. Seems fitting for a show about a numbed world obsessed with a painkiller drug.

I haven't seen it yet, how it is?
8 episodes have been aired so far out of what will be 13 in total. So far really enjoying it and have been entertained throughout. Animation is solid, the premise is a very interesting one and characters are likeable.

The main protagonist is aloof, but very likeable.
He didn't really buy into the hapna thing, and is free of the shackles of society and embodies this freedom in a physical/literal sense too which is often a spectacle.

There's quite a few action set pieces weaved in throughout the show which are top quality and won't disappoint.

Story wise it's episodic but there's an overarching mission to the show which is set up from episode 1 and the it doesn't really lose focus. The overall premise and set up is arguably more powerful/heavier than the screenplay which is quite light and not very intense (which I think is another cause for people not liking it besides the Bebop comparisons). I personally find the tone of the show very refreshing and fits the main protagonist very well. I reckon things will get serious towards the end, but either way I'm really enjoying the show and looking forward to seeing where it goes.

As of episode 8 I would recommend it to anyone who likes a mix of action /drama in their anime.

Thanks buddy that sounds interesting.

I'm not but I like that Ours Samplus is involved

Opinions has been so drastically polarised... But I've definitely enjoyed it to this point. I'm hoping the ending wraps it up well but in all honesty it seems like it's gonna have to cram a fair bit into one episode....
