Haven't read that one but Crime and Punishment and Brothers Karamazov are great.

Aren't they both considered classics? Crime and Punishment certainly is.

Yeah, for sure. One of those philosophical books that makes you think about tough subject matter. Rashokilikov (sp?) is a poor college student who falls ill for several months and can't work. His landlady is threatening to throw him out if he doesn't pay the rent. He has a sudden confrontation with her and in a fit of rage, he kills her. The book goes through his thoughts of guilt over the crime and his internal debate about the morality (or lack thereof) of his actions.

Thomas Ligotti is my favourite. I like his straight-forward writing style. I like his phrasology. I like his general philosophy and understanding of life. I like his attempted X-Files script Crampton.

He's got some spoken word poetry/music that isn't bad either.

My favorite author would probably be Haruki Murakami. I discovered him in 2017 starting with Norwegian Wood and have enjoyed reading his other books as well. My favorite book of his is The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle.

Ohh I remember reading one of Murakami's works in university years ago (Coin Locker Babies) and started to read some of his other works from time to time.

I haven't read this one so I'll have to check and see if our local library has a copy.

Carlos Ruiz Zafón, a spanish mystery writer who sadly passed away back in 2020. His Cemetery of the forgotten books tetralogy is a masterpice (I know that word gets thrown a lot, but it really is fantastic)

favorite author is alan dean foster, he wrote alien,the thing, star wars a new hope, even though it says george lucas on the book, as a thankyou, lucas let him write the sequel to star wars since he let lucas take credit for the novel.

I don’t read a whole lot of novels, I’ve always been much more into non-fiction but William Gibson for sure.

At one point i would have said Piers Anthony. But no, not anymore.

I grew up before internet was really fully a thing, and access to books/stories digitally or in bulk were not a thing. And buying books was expensive ($15 per paperback).

While going to the library was an option, but where do you even start? So as a kid i read Piers Anthony stumbling on accident, then Anne Rice. Then i started at the A section of fiction and found Douglas Adams... and... kinda just stopped. Guess Young Adult just wasn't for me.

Regarding the gothic/horror stories, some writers of "Weird Tales" already mentioned (Lovecraft and Howard), and E.A.Poe, Le Fanu, B.Stoker. Regarding the adventure stories, J. London, R. Stevenson, J. Conrad. Regarding the dramatic novels, W. Scott, C. Dickens, D. Defoe, V. Woolf.

Possibly Don DeLillo. His lows are pretty damn low but his highs are exhilerating. Libra might be my favorite novel. Once I reread the Tunnel and Omensetter's Luck it may or may not be William H Gass.

Is it cliche if I say Haruki Murakami as well. I mean Stephen King and Dostyovesky come close second, but Murakami just speaks to me in a manner you know. My personal favorite, as cliched as it may sound, is still Kafka On The Shore, which was the first book of his I ever read. Though Norwegian Wood and The Elephant Vanishes comes good close second.

I also like Dostyovesky as mentioned, and yeah, like most people mentioned here, Crime and Punishment and Notes From Underground are amazing as well, and I have a special place for The Idiot for some reason. I also liked his short story that was told in 9 letters.

In terms of Stephen King, Salem's Lot, Dolores Claiborne, and The Stand are my personal GOAT.

Other authors whose books I like include: Yoko Ogawa, Sayaka Murata, Khalil Gibran, Mary Shelley, Emily Dickinson, Sylvia Plath, Mark Twain, Junichiro Tanizaki, Yasunari Kawabata, Yukio Mishima, Meiko Kawakami, JK Rowling, Yu Hua, Liu Heng, Kushwant Singh, Ruskin Bond, Dennis Lehane, Dan Brown, and Ryu Murakami.
